After initially not being included in Wednesday's starting lineup against the visiting San Diego Padres, shortstop Corey Seager (wrist) has been added and will bat second against Padres right-handed rookie Adam Mazur. Seager was hit by a pitch last Saturday on the left wrist against the Baltimore Orioles and ended up missing the last two games as a result. Josh Smith will slide over to third base with Seager back in action. Now that Seager is back in the lineup, fantasy managers will want to get him back in their starting lineups for Wednesday's action against a rookie pitcher. The two-time World Series MVP enters Wednesday's game against San Diego riding a seven-game hitting streak since June 22 that has seen him go 9-for-27 (.333) with a homer, two doubles, two RBI, a stolen base and three runs scored.
Arizona Diamondbacks designated hitter Joc Pederson went 2-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 10-8 loss to the Padres. After hitting just .235 in June, Pederson is now 5-for-13 (.385) to start July, going deep in back-to-back games and in three of the last four contests. Despite playing only against right-handed pitching, the veteran has made the most of his opportunities and is having one of his finest seasons as a pro. The 32-year-old has a .289-13-38-34-4 line with a .395 wOBA and 158 wRC+.
Detroit Tigers starting pitching prospect Jackson Jobe looked stellar in his return to Double-A on Friday as he logged five innings of one-run ball. He struck out eight and allowed just three hits and one walk. Jobe was placed on the injured list on May 2 with a left hamstring strain. During his rehab stint, he made three short starts at High-A and tossed nine frames to the tune of a 2.00 ERA and 0.67 WHIP. Through 21 innings at Double-A this season, the former third-overall pick has dominated with a 2.08 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and an 11:32 BB:K ratio. The 21-year-old could still push for a late-season major league debut due to his stellar play, even though the injury slowed him down for a month.
Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Miguel Vargas went 2-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, two runs scored, and a walk in Friday's 8-5 win over the Brewers. Vargas has not seen a lot of playing time with the big league club since he was called up for the second time this season, although that could change with Jason Heyward hitting the IL. Then again, James Outman was just recalled as well, so Vargas may still be limited to a platoon situation. If he can get regular at-bats, the 24-year-old does offer some pop as he hit eight home runs at Triple-A this season in just 41 games, and hit 18 last season between Triple-A and the majors. He also stole eight bags at Triple-A this year, so he's got some speed too. The right-handed hitter is eligible at both 2B and OF in Yahoo leagues for managers interested in taking a flier on the youngster.
Los Angeles Angels starting pitching prospect Caden Dana tossed six innings of one-ball on Friday evening. He allowed four hits and one free pass and struck out nine for the second time this season. This was an excellent rebound game for the 20-year-old, as he allowed six earned runs in his previous start and an overall 3.82 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in June. Overall, the former 11th-round selection has taken a big step forward through his first look at Double-A this summer and is on track to set a career-best in most pitching statistics. MLB Pipeline ranks Dana as the 90th-best prospect in baseball and best in the Angels system, and he remains on pace to contend for his major league debut next summer.
Los Angeles Dodgers closer Evan Phillips earned the save in Friday's 8-5 win over the Brewers. Phillips made quick work of the final three batters, needing just 12 pitches to strike out the side in the ninth. It was Phillips' 14th save of the season and a much-needed clean inning from the reliever after he had allowed a run in two consecutive appearances heading into the game. The righty now owns a 2.03 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and an 8:30 BB:K in 26 2/3 innings pitched.
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Will Smith launched three home runs in Friday's 8-5 win over the Brewers, going 3-for-3 along with a pair of walks. While it was an impressive feat, unfortunately for fantasy, all three were the solo variety, with Smith collecting just three RBI. The backstop scored four times as well. The home runs gave Smith 14 on the season and he now owns a .276-14-53-45-0 line, making him the third-highest scoring catcher for fantasy despite an up-and-down season so far. The 29-year-old hit .362 the first month of the season, then .212 in May and .203 in June, but is now off to a hot .455 start in July (5-for-11).
Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Alek Thomas hit a ninth-inning grand slam Friday, part of a six-run comeback for Arizona that gave them a brief 8-7 lead in the game, only to lose 10-8 after closer Paul Sewald gave up a pair of home runs in the bottom of the inning. The slam was Thomas' only hit in the contest and his second home run of the season. The 24-year-old has missed most of the season with an injured hamstring and was recently activated off the IL. He's 2-for-12 since activation but does offer some intriguing power-speed upside if he can stay healthy. Last season he hit nine home runs and stole nine bags in 374 at-bats, but also hit four more postseason home runs in just 54 at-bats and stole an additional two bases.
Arizona Diamondbacks second baseman Ketel Marte left Friday's game with what manager Torey Lovullo described as back tightness and is considered day-to-day for now. Marte is having one of his best seasons thus far, posting a .284-17-51-59-4 line with a .363 wOBA and 136 wRC+. Veteran Kevin Newman could fill in for Marte if he's unable to go on Saturday.
Pittsburgh Pirates young rookie phenom starting pitcher Paul Skenes (5-0) dazzled on the mound yet again Friday night picking up the win and a quality start going seven innings allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts. Make that five quality starts in a row for the National League Rookie of the Year frontrunner. Skenes is having a dream rookie season so far. In 10 starts he's undefeated with a 2.12 ERA and a sensational 1.02 WHIP in 59 1/3 innings pitched with 78 punchouts this season. Fantasy managers who drafted or quickly added Skenes off the waiver wire before his MLB debut are reaping the rewards. Skenes will look to continue his historic rookie campaign on Wednesday against the division-rival Milwaukee Brewers who rank 11th in the league in team strikeouts this season.
Boston Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida finished 1-for-4 on the evening, the one hit being a game-tying two-run home run in the ninth inning Friday in a 5-3 extra-inning victory over the New York Yankees in the Bronx. The Red Sox were down to their last strike when Yoshida silenced the New York crowd when he took a low and in sinker on a 3-2 count and golfed it 405 feet into the right field bleachers. Ceddanne Rafaela followed that up with a leadoff two-run home run in the 10th inning to secure the come-from-behind win for the Sox. After an underwhelming first half of the season for Yoshida, with only two home runs and a .246 batting average, the 30-year-old's bat is starting to heat up. In a short sample size in July Yoshida is 6-for-17 with a home run and five RBI. Unfortunately, it isn't enough to warrant picking him up on waivers quite yet, but if he keeps this hot streak up he could be a solid add in deeper leagues, despite not getting many at-bats versus left-handed pitchers.
