Jace Jung Back With the Tigers

The Detroit Tigers called up infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo on Friday after placing infielder Colt Keith (rib cage) on the 10-day injured list with right rib-cage inflammation. Jung will rejoin the big-league roster to close out the regular season as infield depth with Keith on the shelf. While the 24-year-old could see some action at the hot corner to close out the month, Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez will be Detroit's top options to replace Keith until the postseason. In just 18 games for the Tigers this year, Jung went 5-for-45 (.111) with no homers, three RBI, seven walks, and 15 strikeouts in 53 trips to the plate. He was better in his rookie season last year, slashing .241/.362/.304 with no homers, three RBI, and a 29:15 K:BB in 34 games. The former first-rounder hit .252/.370/.447 with 17 homers and 74 RBI in 110 games at Toledo this year.

Jace Jung Homers on Thursday

Detroit Tigers third base prospect Jace Jung went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in a 16-5 blowout win against Triple-A Rochester. Jung has struggled overall in August, hitting .233/.291/.384 with two homers in 73 plate appearances. The 24-year-old was with the Tigers for a stretch in April and May, but was overmatched in 18 games with a .356 OPS. The lefty hitter, interestingly, has reverse splits this year, with a .920 OPS against lefties compared to a .341 against righties. He strikes out a bit too much for a bat with average to above-average power. He likely won't be relevant in fantasy leagues for the rest of the season.

Jace Jung Optioned To Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers optioned third base prospect Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday and recalled outfielder Akil Baddoo from Toledo in a corresponding move, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. With Jung heading back to the minors for more seasoning, Zach McKinstry will make the start at third base and bat sixth on Wednesday against Boston Red Sox right-hander Hunter Dobbins. Jung, the younger brother of Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, made his big-league debut in 2024 and hit .241 (19-for-79) with no homers and three RBI in 34 games. After the 24-year-old's promotion in April this year, though, he went 5-for-45 (.111) with no homers, three RBI, seven walks and 15 strikeouts in 18 games played to earn himself a trip back to the farm for more seasoning. When Matt Vierling (shoulder) returns from the injured list, he could steal playing time from McKinstry at third base.

Jace Jung Sitting Out In Series Opener Against Boston

Detroit Tigers rookie third baseman Jace Jung will retreat to the bench for a breather in Monday's series opener against the visiting Boston Red Sox at Comerica Park. Zach McKinstry is handling hot-corner duties and will hit sixth against Red Sox right-hander Tanner Houck. Jung has really struggled at the plate in his first 40 at-bats over 16 games played in just his second MLB season in 2025, recording four hits, driving in three, scoring six runs, walking seven times and striking out 13 times in 47 plate appearances. McKinstry has been better at the dish but offers minimal fantasy upside for DFS lineups on Monday. The 30-year-old has hit .274 (34-for-124) with only one home run, 16 RBI, 20 runs scored and three stolen bases early in the year for Detroit. In seven career at-bats versus Houck, he's hitting .143 with a .286 OPS.

Jace Jung Recalled And Starting On Monday For Tigers

The Detroit Tigers announced on Monday that they have recalled infield prospect Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo and optioned infielder/outfielder Ryan Kreidler to Toledo in a corresponding move. Jung is starting at third base and is batting sixth on Monday against the visiting San Diego Padres and right-hander Randy Vasquez at Comerica Park. At least with right-handers on the mound, the 24-year-old Jung figures to play regularly for the Tigers at third base after slashing .239/.409/.463 with three home runs in 19 games for Toledo before his call-up. Jung, the younger brother of Texas Rangers third baseman Josh Jung, made his big-league debut in 2024 and hit .241 (19-for-79) with five doubles, no homers, three RBI and 14 runs in 34 games played. He will need to lower his strikeout rate (30.9%) from a year ago, but Jung is worth a look in deep-mixed leagues for his power.

Jace Jung Hits Home Run No. 2 At Triple-A

Detroit Tigers third baseman prospect Jace Jung smacked his second home run of 2025 in a 2-for-4 day at the plate for Triple-A Toledo. The 24-year-old also tripled and drew a walk in the contest. The left-handed slugger is 5-for-15 (.333) to begin the 2025 campaign, with four of his five hits going for extra bases. The Texas Tech product has also walked seven times, compared to six strikeouts, giving him a .545 OBP. The Tigers' seventh-ranked prospect debuted with the club last year and held his own, slashing .241/.362/.304, but with no home runs. With a career 15.7 percent walk rate in the minors, Jung would be viable for fantasy if he can get the power to come around the next time he gets the call to the majors, however, he'll be a zero in the stolen base department, and a high strikeout rate may limit any upside. Regardless, look for him to be back with Detroit in 2025.

Jace Jung Optioned To Triple-A

The Detroit Tigers have optioned third baseman Jace Jung to Triple-A Toledo. The 24-year-old was competing for a spot on the Opening Day roster but will instead continue his development at the top level of the minor leagues. Last season, Jung made his MLB debut and held a .241/.362/.304 line with five doubles. He held a 15:29 BB:K. Jung drew walks at an impressive 16.0 percent rate but generated a low .219 xBA. At Triple-A last season, the infielder posted a solid .257/.377/.454 line with 23 doubles and 14 long balls. In 2023, Jung spent most of his campaign at Double-A, where he posted a .284/.373/.563 line with nine doubles and 14 long balls. Fantasy managers should expect Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez to cover the hot corner at the start of the season with Matt Vierling (shoulder) sidelined. Jung will likely be in the mix for an early return to the majors if he performs well at Triple-A.

Jace Jung Hits First Home Run Of The Spring

Detroit Tigers third baseman prospect Jace Jung belted his first home run of the spring in a 1-for-3 day at the plate in a 3-1 Grapefruit League win over the Braves on Tuesday. The former first-round draft pick is 4-for-28 (.160) this spring, but despite the lack of production, he appears to have the inside track to be Detroit's Opening Day third baseman. The left-handed hitter debuted in 2024, and although he hit just .241 with no home runs over 34 games, he demonstrated a keen eye by walking in 16.0 percent of his plate appearances, leading to a strong .362 OBP. Even though he did not hit any long balls in the majors last season, the power is there. He belted 28 home runs across two levels of the minors in 2023 over 128 games and another 14 at Triple-A in 2024 over 91 games. With an NFBC ADP of 461, however, he's realistically only a fantasy option in deeper and AL-only leagues.

Jace Jung Impresses In Batting Practice

MLB.com's Jason Beck writes that Detroit Tigers third base prospect Jace Jung, the team's No. 5 prospect per MLB Pipeline, put on a show during batting practice at spring training on Saturday by sending home runs to all fields. Now that Alex Bregman didn't sign with the Tigers, Jung, Matt Vierling and Andy Ibanez will be competing for the bulk of playing time at the hot corner in 2025. The 24-year-old Jung struggled down the stretch in 2024 and was hampered by a right-wrist injury, but he has regained the explosiveness that led him to 28 home runs in the minors in 2023. Jung had 15 homers in the minors last year and only one extra-base hit in 34 games with the Tigers before having surgery on his wrist in December. He's fully healthy this spring, though, and his exit velocities have been on the rise. The former first-rounder has more fantasy upside than Vierling because of his power, but he could return to Triple-A Toledo to start the 2025 season.

Jace Jung Could Have Limited Playing Time

According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, Detroit Tigers third base prospect Jace Jung could have a difficult path to find consistent playing time to open the season. Stavenhagen noted that if the Tigers do not sign Bregman, it would "make sense" that the Tigers platoon both Matt Vierling and Jung at the hot corner. However, the Tigers also have Zach McKinstry and Andy Ibanez to guarantee contacts, which could also crowd the infield. Jung underwent offseason wrist surgery but is expected to be ready for spring training. However, given the crowded infield, Stavenhagen noted that it is not "out of the question" their third base prospect opens the season at the Triple-A level. Fantasy managers should continue monitoring his production during spring training, as it will likely clarify where he begins the 2025 season. Last summer, across his first 34 major league games, the former 12th overall pick posted a .241/.362/.304 line.
