Walbert Urena a Rookie Strikeout Arm to Add Now?

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Walbert Urena has worked his way into the 12-team waiver mix with a 3.03 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 75 strikeouts through 77 1/3 innings. The 22-year-old held Seattle to one run and one hit over 5 2/3 innings on July 2, bouncing back after Oakland tagged him for seven runs in his previous start. The walks are the part that can still make this frustrating. Urena has issued 41 free passes, and his 12.2% walk rate shows up in the WHIP even with the strong ERA. Still, a 3.26 xERA and 33.2% hard-hit rate support most of what he has done so far. RotoBaller lists Urena at 34% rostered in Yahoo formats and recommends him in 12-team leagues. He is worth adding for managers who need innings and steady strikeout help.

Walbert Urena Remains a Waiver-Wire Priority Despite Rough Outing

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Walbert Urena had a rough day in his most recent start, allowing seven earned runs across 4 1/3 innings against the Athletics. However, even with the blowup outing, Urena has been a breakout success story this season for the Angels. Across 71 2/3 innings (15 games), Urena has recorded a 5-6 record with a 3.14 ERA, 1.34 WHIP, and 69 strikeouts. The 22-year-old's WHIP is inflated by his 11.8% walk rate, which is a bit of a concern for fantasy managers. Still, Urena is averaging 97.6 miles per hour on his fastball and owns a 54.5% ground ball rate, which has helped him limit damage via the long ball (0.63 HR/9). Particularly in deeper league formats, Urena profiles as a quality innings eater who should be targeted on the waiver wire where available.

Walbert Urena a Must-Add Off the Waiver Wire in Midst of Breakout Season

Los Angeles Angels rookie right-hander Walbert Urena has come out of nowhere to become one of the Angels' most reliable starters in 2026 in his first year in the big leagues. Through his first 14 appearances (12 starts) this year, Urena has gone 5-5 with a 2.41 ERA (3.95 FIP) and 1.31 WHIP with 64 strikeouts and 35 walks in 67 1/3 innings pitched. The 22-year-old Dominican hurler has been a bit fortunate given his 12% walk rate, but the good news is that he didn't allow a free pass for the first time all year in his last outing on June 20 against the division-rival Athletics, in which he tossed five shutout innings with six strikeouts for his fifth win of the year. Urena also induced 17 swings and misses while throwing 58 of his 90 pitches for strikes. At the very least, Urena has earned himself a longer leash in terms of sticking around in the Angels' starting rotation for the rest of the season. Command is a concern, but fantasy managers need to consider adding him off the waiver wire if you're desperate for pitching help. Urena is rostered in 43% of Yahoo leagues. He'll face the A's again in his next outing, but at least it will be at Angel Stadium.

Walbert Urena Quietly Becoming a Pitcher to Roster in Deeper Leagues

Los Angeles Angels rookie right-hander Walbert Urena pitches for one of the worst teams in baseball, but he has gained steam off the waiver wire after going 4-5 with a 2.60 ERA (4.15 FIP) and 1.35 WHIP with 58 strikeouts and 35 walks in 62 1/3 innings pitched across his first 13 major-league appearances (11 starts) for the Halos. The 22-year-old Dominican took his fifth loss of the year in his last outing on Monday against the Arizona Diamondbacks, giving up four runs (three earned) while walking two and striking out only three, but he threw a season-high seven innings. Urena already has six quality starts and has allowed three or fewer runs in nine straight outings to attract some eyeballs around the league. He's been a bit fortunate, though, with a bloated walk rate of 12.9% and with a below-average 21.3% strikeout rate. Urena has plenty of potential to stick around in the Angels' starting rotation for the rest of the season, but if his command doesn't improve, he's very likely to be hit by regression at some point soon. Right now, he's rostered in 40% of Yahoo leagues.

Walbert Urena a Potential Breakout Pitcher?

Los Angeles Angels right-hander Walbert Urena picked up the fourth win of his first season in the big leagues on Tuesday night over the visiting Houston Astros, tossing five scoreless innings while allowing three hits, walking five, and striking out seven. The 22-year-old Dominican hurler is now 4-4 in his rookie season for the Halos with a 2.44 ERA (4.01 FIP) and 1.35 WHIP with 55 strikeouts and 33 walks in 55 1/3 innings pitched over his 12 appearances (10 starts). Urena has exceeded expectations so far in his first big-league season, but his lack of control is something that is keeping him from being a true breakout candidate in his first year. He threw only 59 of his 107 pitches for strikes on Tuesday against Houston, and he has at least three walks in each of his last four starts. His five-walk performance this week was his second such outing of 2026. If Urena can start to limit the free passes, he'll become much more attractive off the waiver wire. Right now, Urena is rostered in 31% of Yahoo leagues.
