Jonathan Ornelas Promoted To Major-League Roster, Starting On Sunday
The Texas Rangers have recalled shortstop Jonathan Ornelas from Triple-A Round Rock. Ornelas will provide some depth in the infield as the Rangers placed third baseman Josh Jung (neck) on the 10-day injured list. However, manager Bruce Bochy hopes that Jung only stays on the IL for a minimum stint. Last season, Ornelas appeared in 18 MLB contests and posted .216/.256/.270 slash line with two doubles and a 2:13 BB:K. Across 88 contests at Triple-A last summer, Ornelas posted a .251/.322/.326 line with 10 doubles, three triples, and three home runs. He also swiped nine bags. Fantasy managers should not expect Ornelas to see consistent opportunities, as Josh Smith (quadriceps) will likely see most of the time at the hot corner when he is cleared for action. On Sunday, Ornelas will bat eighth and cover shortstop.

Across the past two seasons, Ornelas has appeared in just 26 contests in the major leagues. Last summer, across 18 contests in Texas, the 24-year-old held a .215/.256/.270 slash line. He tallied just eight hits and only two went for extra-bases. During his brief stint in the majors, Ornelas was valuable from a defensive standpoint as he made starts at second base, third base, shortstop, and the outfield. In 88 games with Triple-A, Ornelas held a .251/.322/.326 line with 10 doubles and three long balls. Fantasy managers in deeper formats should expect him to return to the majors later in the season but will only carry minimal fantasy value given his lack of offensive upside.
