St. Louis Cardinals placed right-handed pitcher Kodi Whitley on the 10-day injured list Sunday. Whitley is now on the injured list due to mild back spasms. The 26-year-old last made an appearance on Monday. In 2021, Whitley carries a 6.10 ERA in 10 1/3 innings pitched. He fanned eight batters and has posted a 1.35 WHIP this year while posting a 0-0 record. Right-handed Seth Elledge has been recalled from Triple-A Memphis to replace Whitley. Having Whitley on the injured list shouldn't play too much of a factor in fantasy leagues.
The St. Louis Cardinals have called up relief pitcher Kodi Whitley from their alternate site. With Johan Oviedo being optioned down, Whitley will take his roster spot and also likely his role as a low-to-middle leverage middle reliever. Oviedo threw 65 pitches just two days ago, so this move is likely more about getting a fresh arm in the bullpen than anything else. Whitley made his debut last year and allowed one run on two hits while striking out five in 4 2/3 innings. There's some long term upside here, but he doesn't need to be rostered in most formats for now.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kodi Whitley has made the Opening Day roster, according to beat writer Derrick Goold. Whitley was drafted in the 27th round of the 2017 draft and has put up excellent numbers in his minor league career. In 156 2/3 minor league innings, Whitley has posted a 2.01 ERA while consistently striking out well over a batter per inning. He'll work in middle relief but could work his way into a more significant role if his success continues.
