Matt Vierling Begins Rehab Assignment

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (oblique) began a rehab assignment on Friday with Triple-A Toledo, per MLB.com. Vierling has been on the 10-day injured list since early August due to an oblique issue. The 28-year-old was a key piece for Detroit in 2024, but injuries have limited him to just 31 games so far in 2025. In that 100-plate appearance sample size, Vierling is slashing .239/.310/.307 with just one home run. Upon his return, Vierling could factor into the Tigers' outfield mix, but is more likely destined for a bench role and will not make a significant fantasy impact.

Matt Vierling Heads to 10-Day Injured List

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (oblique) was placed on the 10-day injured list ahead of Sunday's game against the Los Angeles Angels. Vierling was lifted out of Saturday's game for what appeared to be a matchup decision to get Kerry Carpenter into the game. Now, Vierling's exit is looking like it was injury related. He'll head to the injured list with a left oblique strain. It's unclear how much time he's going to miss at the moment. Vierling isn't worth rostering in fantasy formats right now. In a corresponding move, infielder Trey Sweeney has been recalled from Triple-A Toledo.

Matt Vierling Activated and Playing on Saturday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) has been activated off the 10-day injured list ahead of Saturday's game against the Minnesota Twins. Vierling is back in the mix after missing most of the season due to right shoulder inflammation. Vierling was a valuable bat last season, so hopefully he can pick up where he left off. He'll cover center field and bat seventh versus right-hander Bailey Ober on Saturday. In a corresponding move, infielder Trey Sweeney has been optioned to Triple-A Toledo. Vierling should have at least deep league value, assuming he plays regularly in the outfield.

Matt Vierling Scheduled to Return to The Lineup Wednesday

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) was scratched from Sunday's Mud Hens game with an illness and was still feeling it a bit on Tuesday. He's scheduled to return to the Hens Wednesday, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Vierling experienced a brief setback in his rehab assignment due to this illness. Still, it does not appear to be anything serious, as he seems ready to return to action on Wednesday. After missing the first eight weeks of the season with a strained rotator cuff, Vierling proceeded to have a setback with the same shoulder in late May and has only had 11 plate appearances thus far with the Tigers in 2025 after slashing .257/.312/.423 last season. Since beginning his rehab assignment on June 13, he has gone 4-for-20 in five games played. It's possible he could join the Tigers as soon as this weekend, but the Tigers may want him to continue to see at-bats, as he has not played a lot thus far this season.

Matt Vierling Resumes Throwing

Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) resumed throwing this week and is completing all other baseball activities on a daily basis, according to MLive's Evan Woodbery. Vierling was placed on the 10-day injured list on May 27 with right-shoulder inflammation and he received an injection last Thursday. The 28-year-old has been bothered by his shoulder injury all year and was only able to play in four games before going back on the IL. In four games played this year, he's gone 2-for-11 with two RBI and a strikeout for the first-place Tigers. It remains to be seen when Vierling will be able to return or what role he'll even have when he does rejoin the big-league roster, but in addition to the outfield, he has the ability to fill in at the hot corner and should at least play against left-handed pitchers. He had a career-high 16 long balls and 57 RBI in 144 games for Detroit last year.

Matt Vierling Receives Injection, Will Resume Baseball Activities

Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) received an injection in his ailing right shoulder on Thursday. The 28-year-old is expected to resume baseball activities this weekend. The fifth-year pro had already missed most of the season to this point with shoulder inflammation, returning for four games at the end of May before heading back to the shelf. The fact that he'll resume baseball activities this weekend is a good sign, though, so hopefully the injury doesn't continue to linger. The 6-foot-2 slugger is coming off a season in which he belted 16 home runs and scored 80 runs, plus he is eligible at both 3B and OF, so there is some fantasy intrigue with Vierling, but for now, he's probably best left to the waiver wire.

Matt Vierling Goes Back on Injured List With Shoulder Inflammation

The Detroit Tigers placed infielder/outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) back on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday with right-shoulder inflammation, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. In a corresponding move, outfielder Wenceel Perez (back) was reinstated from the 60-day IL. Vierling started the 2025 season on the IL with a strained right rotator cuff and had just returned for his season debut before suffering a setback with his shoulder. The 28-year-old only played in four games for Detroit and went 2-for-11 at the plate with two RBI. He will now go back on the shelf, and it's likely he won't be ready to return when his 10 days are up. It's looking like it could be a lost season for Vierling if his shoulder continues to be a problem. Until he returns, Detroit can use Perez as an option in center field, while Zach McKinstry should continue to see most of the playing time at third base.

Matt Vierling Returns From Injured List

The Detroit Tigers activated third baseman/outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list on Friday and optioned left-handed reliever Sean Guenther to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Vierling is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the division-rival Cleveland Guardians, but he'll be available as a pinch-hitter. He has been out since suffering a strained right rotator cuff on Feb. 23 in spring training, missing a total of 51 games this year. Although the 28-year-old isn't starting on Friday, he's been a mainstay for Detroit the last two years and should see consistent playing time for the first-place Tigers. Vierling had his best season a year ago, hitting .257 with 16 homers, 41 walks and 121 strikeouts in 144 games, and he offers fantasy managers eligibility in the outfield and at third base. He projects to mainly play right field and third base.

Matt Vierling Could Return this Weekend

Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports that Detroit Tigers outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) has an outside chance at rejoining the team this weekend from his stint on the injured list. The St. Louis native has been sidelined since the second game of spring training with a strained rotator cuff. Vierling and teammates Parker Meadows and Wenceel Perez were all sent to Single-A Lakeland to play a game Wednesday after rain spoiled Tuesday's Triple-A Toledo outing. To get his team to full strength sooner rather than later, manager A.J. Hinch opted to get the players reps any way he could. McCosky notes that the 28-year-old could be activated on Sunday with Detroit set to line up against lefty Logan Allen and the Guardians. Whether that happens is unclear, but it appears Vierling should return soon.

Matt Vierling Plays Outfield In Rehab Start On Sunday

Detroit Tigers infielder/outfielder Matt Vierling (shoulder) played six innings in right field on Sunday in a minor-league rehab game for Triple-A Toledo and went 0-for-3 at the plate. It was the first time that Vierling played defense in his fifth appearance on the farm. The 28-year-old has gone 3-for-13 with two home runs, a double, two RBI and three runs scored so far with the Mud Hens as he looks to make his 2025 debut with Detroit in the near future. If he is able to avoid a setback with his shoulder, it's possible Vierling could rejoin the major-league roster this weekend or early next week. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues looking for help in the outfield or at third base should take notice, as Vierling should play regularly between center field and the hot corner when he's back. In his two seasons with the Tigers, he's slashed .259/.320/.406 with 26 homers, 101 RBI and 12 steals in 278 games played.
