Michael Chavis Inks Minors Deal With Mariners

The Seattle Mariners and infielder Michael Chavis have agreed on a minor-league deal for the 2024 season. The deal comes with an invite to big-league spring training. A former top prospect with the Red Sox, the 28-year-old is now with his fourth organization as he's struggled to put it together at the plate at the MLB level. He owns a career .238 average with a decent 42 home runs and eight stolen bases across 357 big-league games played. He's brought a decent amount of pop to the table but he has walked in just 5.4% of his career plate appearances to pair with a bloated 31.9% K%. As a result, his bat has graded out 20% below the league average for his career, as per his 80 wRC+. He was designated for assignment by the Nationals earlier this offseason.

Michael Chavis Clears Waivers, Elects Free Agency

Washington Nationals infielder Michael Chavis has cleared outright waivers and has elected to become a free agent. A once-promising prospect in the Boston Red Sox organization, the now 28-year-old appeared in 48 games with the Nationals in 2023 and limped to a .242 average with a pair of homers, one stolen base, and a .622 OPS across 96 trips to the plate. It was the fifth consecutive underwhelming season for the 2014 first-round pick as he now owns a career .238 average, 42 HR, eight SB, and a .684 OPS across 1,186 plate appearances, production that grades out 20% below the league average, as per his 80 wRC+. However, he has handled himself well throughout his minor-league career, so it's quite possible he will latch on with another club for infield depth while potentially heading overseas for the 2024 season.

Nationals Agree With Michael Chavis On Minor-League Deal

The Washington Nationals have reportedly agreed with free-agent infielder Michael Chavis on a minor-league deal, per a tweet from The Washington Post's Andrew Golden on Monday. Chavis would make $1 million if he makes the majors and could earn up to $500,ooo in incentives. He has a June 1 opt-out if he's not in the majors by then. Chavis appeared in 129 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 2022 season, hitting .229 with a .265 on-base percentage. The 27-year-old also added 14 home runs and a stolen base for the National League Central franchise.

The versatile 27-year-old started games at first base, second base and third base for Pittsburgh this season. Overall, he hit .229 with a .265 on-base percentage, 14 home runs and a stolen base in 426 plate appearances for the Pirates.

Michael Chavis Utilized As Pinch-Runner Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Michael Chavis (forearm) has been held out of the starting lineup for each of the team's last three games due to a forearm injury. However, he made an appearance off the bench in Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was utilized as a pinch-runner in the ninth inning of the game and wound up scoring the game-winning run in the team's 6-5 victory. It seems likely that the 26-year-old will be back to full-time duties soon. Over 39 games this year, he's slashing .286/.320/.473 with four home runs, 15 RBI and 12 runs.

Michael Chavis Returns From The Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates activated second baseman Michael Chavis (elbow) from the injured list on Tuesday. He went on to make an appearance as a pinch hitter in Tuesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. He hit a single and drove in a run. Chavis was sidelined for about a month due to a right elbow strain. He was hitting well before the injury. Over just six games as a Pirate - following his acquisition from Boston - he slashed .364/.364/.591 with one home run, two RBI and four runs. He should see a good amount of playing time the rest of the way and could be a sneaky source of power for fantasy managers in need over the final week of the year.

Michael Chavis Starts Triple-A Rehab Stint Thursday

The 22-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list two weeks ago with a right elbow strain. Chavis has only played in six games for the Pirates since being acquired at the trade deadline but has played well, hitting .364/.364/.591 over that span with one home run, two RBI, and four runs scored on eight hits.

Michael Chavis Lands On Injured List With Elbow Strain

The Pittsburgh Pirates placed second baseman Michael Chavis (elbow) on the 10-day injured list due to a right elbow strain on Tuesday. Infielder Hoy Park was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Chavis suffered the injury during this past Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals when he attempted to make a diving catch in right field. Chavis was traded to the Pirates prior to the trade deadline. He has only appeared in six games with the team, but has performed well, slashing .364/.364/.591 with a home run and two doubles.

Michael Chavis Exits On Saturday With Elbow Discomfort

Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Michael Chavis (elbow) was removed from Saturday's game against the St. Louis Cardinals due to right elbow discomfort. He went 0-for-1 in the game before he was replaced by Cole Tucker, who went on to go 0-for-1 with two walks. We don't know anything about the severity of Chavis's injury at this point, but he will be reevaluated on Sunday, at which point we'll know more. Chavis has only been with the Pirates for about a week and he's been a productive hitter for the team so far. He's slashed .364/.364/.591 with one home run and two doubles over his first six games with the team.

Michael Chavis Traded To Pirates For Austin Davis

The Boston Red Sox on Friday traded infielder Michael Chavis to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for relief pitcher Austin Davis. Chavis is having the weakest season of his major league career, hitting .190/.207/.342 with two home runs and six RBI on 15 hits through 79 at-bats. Davis, 28, was one of a few relievers the Red Sox added to their bullpen on Friday to give their tired pitching staff a bit of a reprieve. However, his 5.59 ERA through 9 2/3 innings pitched this season should be a red flag for fantasy managers.
