Mike Vasil to Compete for Starting Rotation Spot

Chicago White Sox pitcher Mike Vasil will get a chance to compete for a starting rotation spot in Spring Training. Vasil mostly pitched as a reliever last season, but recently said on the Baseball Isn't Boring podcast that he'll get a chance to pitch as a starting pitcher. The 25-year-old registered a 2.50 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, and an 82/52 K/BB ratio across 47 games (three starts) with the White Sox last season. He mostly worked as a multi-inning reliever and threw over 100 innings in 2025. The transition to a starting pitcher doesn't seem too difficult for Vasil, given he's already stretched out as a multiple-inning reliever. Before the 2025 campaign, Vasil was a full-time starting pitcher in the minor leagues with the New York Mets. The White Sox certainly need help in the starting rotation, so they might as well give Vasil a chance.

Mike Vasil Gets Five-Out Save on Sunday

Chicago White Sox reliever Mike Vasil picked up his second save of the year in a 5-2 win over the San Francisco Giants on Sunday. Vasil entered a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the top of the eighth and got Heliot Ramos to ground into an inning-ending double play. The right-hander stayed in to begin the ninth, striking out Rafael Devers before issuing a walk to Wilmer Flores. Once again, though, Vasil induced an inning-ending double play - this time to Mike Yastrzemski. Vasil ended his day with 1 2/3 scoreless innings and 17 pitches. The 25-year-old has been an effective innings-eater for Chicago, having recorded a 2.73 ERA across 56 frames. However, he's not typically on the radar for save opportunities. Grant Taylor has recently been Chicago's top choice to close games, but he was off Sunday after getting a six-out save Saturday.

Mike Vasil Expected to Work as Bulk Reliever on Tuesday

With Chicago White Sox rookie right-hander Mike Vasil not being used in Monday's loss to the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks, he's expected to be used as the team's bulk reliever on Tuesday following opener Jordan Leisure. Neither Vasil nor Leisure will be recommended fantasy streamers against Arizona, even without outfielder Corbin Carroll (hand) and third baseman Eugenio Suarez (hand). Vasil has started in each of his last three appearances for the White Sox and has allowed eight earned runs on 14 hits while walking six and striking out 11. In those three starts, the 25-year-old hasn't gone beyond four innings, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect any kind of length on Tuesday. Overall, the former eighth-rounder of the New York Mets in 2021 out of Virginia has a 2.94 ERA (4.87 FIP), a save, 1.35 WHIP and 38:27 K:BB in 49 innings pitched.

Mike Vasil Acquired By Tampa Bay

The Tampa Bay Rays have acquired pitching prospect Mike Vasil from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for cash considerations. Vasil was selected by the Phillies earlier on Wednesday during the Rule 5 draft from the New York Mets but will now take his talents to Tampa Bay. Vasil has spent his entire professional career with the New York Mets. He spent the past two summers pitching at the Triple-A level. Last season, the right-hander posted a 6.04 ERA and a 1.54 WHIP across 134 innings of work. The previous season, he held a slightly better 5.30 ERA and 1.48 WHIP at Triple-A. Before moving to a new club, Vasil was considered the No.18 prospect in the Mets system on MLB Pipeline. Fantasy managers should expect the 24-year-old to open the season at the Triple-A level once again.
