Pete Alonso Meets With Cubs and Red Sox at Winter Meetings

The Chicago Cubs and Boston Red Sox met with first baseman Pete Alonso at the Winter Meetings before he ultimately signed his five-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles, according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post. While details of the discussions remain unclear, it's noteworthy that the Cubs sat down with the 31-year-old slugger. Chicago's current first baseman, Michael Busch, is coming off a career year in which he slashed .261/.343/.523 with 34 home runs, 90 RBI, 78 runs, and four stolen bases, good for a 140 wRC+. The one notable concern is his performance against left-handed pitching. Busch hit just .207 against southpaws last season and struck out 26 times in 95 plate appearances, raising the possibility that the Cubs may view him as a long-term platoon option. For fantasy managers, Busch's usage against same-handed pitching is something worth monitoring moving forward.

Mets Never Made a Formal Offer to Re-Sign Pete Alonso

The New York Mets never made a formal offer to try and bring first baseman Pete Alonso back, a source told MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. It became clear to the Mets that the bidding for Alonso "was heading to places they weren't interested in going." The Baltimore Orioles landed the 31-year-old All-Star for five years and $155 million on Wednesday. It's been a rough week for the Mets, as they also lost former closer Edwin Diaz to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Alonso had a strong 2025 season in his last year in Queens, slashing .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs and 126 RBI in a full 162 games. The Polar Bear is an elite source of power for fantasy managers, as he's clubbed 264 round-trippers in seven seasons since entering the league in 2019. We shouldn't expect Alonso to hit for average again in 2026 in Baltimore, but he's a pretty good bet for 30-plus homers and 100-plus RBI with the O's if he stays healthy.

Pete Alonso, Orioles Finalizing Five-Year Deal

Free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso and the Baltimore Orioles are finalizing a five-year, $155 million deal on Wednesday, sources tell ESPN's Jeff Passan. Alonso is leaving the Mets to join the American League East. The 31-year-old right-handed slugger was greeted by a cold market last offseason and eventually re-signed with the Mets for two years and $54 million. Alonso opted out of the final year of the deal after 2025, though, and now he's on the move. The Polar Bear had a career-high .272 batting average in 2025 in his final year with the Mets and added 38 home runs, a league-high 41 doubles, 126 RBI, and 87 runs scored in 162 games played. Alonso isn't the best defensive first baseman, but he makes up for it by being an elite slugger at the plate. He has cleared 30-plus home runs in all six of his full seasons and has topped 40 homers three times. Alonso gives the Orioles some much-needed thump in the middle of their batting order.

Did the Price for Pete Alonso Just Go Up?

The price for free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso has "likely" risen in light of Kyle Schwarber's five-year, $150 million contract, per Chris Cotillo and Sean McAdam of MassLive.com. Alonso is now expected to seek a six- or seven-year deal, though it's unclear whether the Boston Red Sox would commit to a contract that would carry him through his age-36 or age-37 season. The 31-year-old slugger bet on himself last year by taking a one-year deal with the Mets, and that decision appears poised to pay off. In 2025, Alonso launched 38 home runs and slashed .272/.347/.524 with a 141 wRC+ across a career-high 709 plate appearances. For fantasy managers, Alonso remains one of the safest sources of home runs in the league, and he's played all 162 games in each of the last two seasons.

Pete Alonso Expected to Attend Winter Meetings

Free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso is expected to drive from his Tampa home to the winter meetings in Orlando, Fla., to meet in person with interested teams, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post. The Boston Red Sox and Baltimore Orioles are among the teams that Alonso is scheduled to meet with. The New York Mets are open to considering re-signing the Polar Bear, but they aren't going to break the bank for him. Alonso was a free agent last year, too, but he ended up re-signing to a two-year, $54 million contract. The right-handed power-hitting first baseman opted out of the final year of the deal to become a free agent again this winter. If the Mets and Alonso don't reunite again, they could turn to lefty slugger Kyle Schwarber or Japanese corner infielder Munetaka Murakami. The 31-year-old Alonso isn't great defensively, but he's an elite power bat with at least 34 home runs in all six full seasons in the majors since he debuted in 2019.

Red Sox Going for Either Alex Bregman or Pete Alonso?

MLB Network's Jon Morosi says that he thinks the Boston Red Sox will "either bring back Alex Bregman" or "make an all-out pursuit of Pete Alonso." Morosi likes Boston's "chances to get one or the other." "I believe the Red Sox are the strongest contender of anyone to take Pete Alonso away from the New York Mets," Morosi added. The BoSox will be on the market for a starting pitcher this winter, too, but Morosi thinks it will be a big priority to try and bring Bregman back after his strong season in 2025 in Beantown. In 114 games last year, Bregman hit .273 with 18 homers, 62 RBI, an .821 OPS, and a 3.5 WAR, while Alonso hit .272 with 38 bombs, 126 RBI, an .871 OPS, and a 3.4 WAR in 162 games. Alonso has the clear edge in the power department, but Bregman is more versatile on defense and is still an above-average defender at third base. Both players opted out of their deals with their respective teams following the World Series, and both share the same agent in Scott Boras.

Orioles Could be in the Mix to Sign Pete Alonso

The New York Post's Jon Heyman says that free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso is still a priority for the New York Mets, but he's also reporting that the Baltimore Orioles could be in the mix to sign him. The Mets are saying that they are looking to change their culture and want to prioritize run prevention, but Heyman doesn't think they can afford to lose Alonso's 38 home runs and 126 RBI. The Orioles are a surprise suitor because they have not really been linked to Alonso to this point. Reports have suggested that if Alonso does leave the Big Apple, the best fit for him could be the Boston Red Sox. In Baltimore, the O's are definitely looking to shake things up after a disappointing 2025 season, and Alonso would be a major upgrade at first base (at least offensively) over Ryan Mountcastle and Coby May. Although Alonso will be on the wrong side of 30 in 2026, the five-time All-Star is still an elite power bat with 264 homers in his seven major-league seasons.

Mets Expected to Let Pete Alonso Walk in Free Agency

The New York Mets are expected to let free-agent first baseman Pete Alonso walk this offseason "unless he signs a deal they can't turn down," according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. President of baseball operations David Stearns was ready to let Alonso walk last year before they ultimately brought him back. The 30-year-old right-handed slugger had another monster year in 2025 with a .272 average, 38 home runs, a league-leading 41 doubles, 126 RBI, and 87 runs scored in 162 games, but it wasn't enough to help the Mets make the playoffs. The Mets are preaching defense and run prevention going forward, and Alonso's weakness is his defense at first base. After missing the postseason, the Mets are reportedly looking for a culture shift without Alonso and several other position players going into 2026. General managers are predicting that the perfect landing spot for Alonso this offseason might be the Boston Red Sox.

Pete Alonso Officially Opts Out of his Contract With Mets

As expected, New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso officially opted out of his deal with the Mets on Monday and is now a free agent, according to Jon Heyman of the New York Post. Alonso was a free agent last offseason as well and didn't find what he was looking for on the open market, eventually re-signing in the Big Apple for two years and $54 million. The 30-year-old veteran right-handed slugger is once again a free agent after opting out of the second year of the contract. Alonso, the former National League Rookie of the Year in 2019, has been an All-Star each of the last four seasons and has had at least 34 home runs each year in that span. In 162 games in 2025, Alonso clubbed 38 home runs, drove in 126, and had a league-high 41 doubles while slashing .272/.347/.524 in 709 plate appearances. Alonso is still one of the premier sluggers in the game and should be an elite source of power in fantasy, regardless of where he ends up.

Pete Alonso to Opt Out of Contract and Enter Free Agency

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso may no longer be a Met, as he plans to opt out of his contract and enter free agency, reports Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. He signed a two-year deal for $54 million prior to the season, but he is ultimately choosing to opt out of his $24 million expected payment for 2026. The 30-year-old should be able to score a lucrative contract on the free agent market, as he is coming off a season where he slashed .272/.347/.524 with 38 home runs, 126 RBI, and 87 runs. The announcement is coming sooner than many expected, but the Mets shockingly missed the playoffs after a late-season collapse.
