Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Zach Penrod (elbow) experienced soreness after throwing a bullpen session earlier in the week. The southpaw underwent an MRI which didn't reveal any structural damage. Despite that, the Red Sox plan to shut down Penrod for now. Red Sox manager Alex Cora said that Penrod is going to be out awhile. Penrod looked solid in a small sample size during the 2024 season, but will now miss the beginning of the season. The Red Sox do have some depth in the left-handed reliever department with Aroldis Chapman, Brennan Bernardino, and Justin Wilson. For now, Penrod will avoid surgery, but that could change down the road.
Boston Red Sox left-hander Zach Penrod (elbow) is dealing with left-elbow soreness in camp and has gone for an MRI exam. This could be why the Red Sox signed veteran left-handed reliever Matt Moore to a minor-league deal on Thursday that includes an invitation to spring training. The 27-year-old Penrod made his major-league debut for the BoSox last year and had a 2.25 ERA (5.42 FIP) and 1.75 WHIP with four walks and three strikeouts in four innings out of the bullpen. Penrod was fortunate to have an ERA under 3.00 in his limited work in the big leagues last year. Before getting called up, he had a 4.16 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with a 93:33 K:BB in 62 2/3 innings over 22 appearances (12 starts) with Double-A Portland and Triple-A Worcester. Penrod is competing for a spot in the team's Opening Day bullpen at spring training.
The Boston Red Sox have promoted pitching prospect Zach Penrod to Triple-A Worcester. The lefty was just recently named Eastern League Double-A Pitcher of the Week after posting back-to-back 10-strikeout performances. Although he allowed four runs in his last start, Penrod nearly made it three straight starts with 10 strikeouts, striking out nine batters over five-and-a-third innings pitched. On the season the 26-year-old has a 2.80 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, and a 53:13 K:BB in 35 1/3 IP.
Zach Penrod Named Eastern League Double-A Pitcher Of The Week
Boston Red Sox starting pitching prospect Zach Penrod was recently named Eastern League Pitcher Of The Week. Penrod has been outstanding this season with Double-A Portland as he has pitched 30 innings to the tune of a 2.10 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and a solid 44:12 K:BB ratio. This past week, the southpaw tallied ten punchouts in consecutive outings for the first time in his career. Penrod has looked quite solid after recovering from Tommy John surgery the past few seasons. Last year, he held a 2.18 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, and 20:11 K:BB ratio through 20 innings with High-A. Penrod should be a name to monitor this summer, as he has looked quite strong since the end of his recovery and could become a name to target in dynasty leagues down the road.
