Albert Suarez Diagnosed With Mild Flexor Strain

The Baltimore Orioles are saying that right-hander Albert Suarez (forearm) suffered a mild forearm flexor strain during his last appearance of the season on Sept. 14, according to Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner. Suarez has continued his rehab into the winter, and the Orioles expect him to begin a throwing progression in the coming weeks. It was an injury-plagued year for the 36-year-old veteran Venezuelan hurler, as he only threw 11 2/3 innings for Baltimore. In his five outings (one start), Suarez was 2-0 with a 2.31 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, and 10 strikeouts. He missed most of the season with a right-shoulder injury. In his two seasons with the O's, Suarez has a combined 11-7 record, 3.59 ERA (4.07 FIP), a 1.27 WHIP, and a 118:45 K:BB in 145 1/3 innings over 37 outings (25 starts). It sounds like Suarez has a chance to be ready for spring training to give Baltimore flexibility between the rotation and bullpen.

Albert Suarez Placed on 15-Day Injured List With Right-Elbow Discomfort

Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Albert Suarez (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday with right elbow discomfort, ending his season. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said the injury occurred during Suarez's start against the Blue Jays on Sunday. Suarez was scheduled for an MRI on Monday and will talk with team doctors on Tuesday. The 35-year-old, who had an emergent 2024 season, only managed to pitch 11 2/3 innings this season due to a Grade 2 right subscapularis strain. Fantasy managers should wait for more news to inform his potential 2026 fantasy outlook.

Albert Suarez Prepping for Bulk-Relief Role

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Albert Suarez (shoulder) began his minor-league rehab assignment on Tuesday with Double-A Chesapeake and is being prepped for a bulk-relief role in the big leagues when he comes off the injured list, according to MASN's Roch Kubatko. Suarez threw 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes during his brief outing on Tuesday. The 35-year-old veteran made only one appearance (2 2/3 innings of relief) for the Orioles to begin the year before landing on the IL back on March 28. Because of the long layoff due to his shoulder injury, Suarez is going to need at least a handful more rehab outings on the farm before Baltimore activates him for a long-relief role out of their bullpen. Fantasy managers can stay away. Suarez has a 4.07 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 198:80 K:BB in 252 career innings over four big-league seasons.

Albert Suarez Expected to Begin Rehab Assignment

Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Albert Suarez (shoulder) is expected to start a rehab assignment on Tuesday or Wednesday, reports Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com. The 35-year-old made just one appearance this year, on March 28, before suffering a right subscapularis strain in his throwing shoulder. While it's good to finally see him throwing again, his rehab stint is likely to be a lengthy one if the plan is to use him as a starting pitcher. With less than two months left in the season, time is running out for Suarez to make an impact in 2025. The other option would be to use him in some type of relief role, but either way, he is an afterthought for fantasy purposes.

Albert Suarez Shut Down From Throwing

Baltimore Orioles right-handed pitcher Albert Suarez (shoulder) has been shut down from throwing. According to Matt Weyrich of the Baltimore Sun, he will not resume throwing until an MRI shows healing in his right shoulder. He will not begin throwing for at least three weeks. The 35-year-old was recently moved to the 60-day injured list. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his progress, but should not expect him to return to the mound anytime soon. Last summer, Suarez operated as a swingman in Baltimore and appeared in 32 games (24 starts) and held a 3.70 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP across 133 2/3 innings of work. With Suarez sidelined, fantasy managers should expect southpaw Cade Povich to continue to see opportunities in the rotation.

Albert Suarez Placed On 15-Day Injured List

The Baltimore Orioles announced on Sunday that they have placed right-hander Albert Suarez (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to March 29) with right-shoulder inflammation and have selected the contract of right-hander Matt Bowman from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. Suarez, 35, lost out on the No. 5 rotation spot out of spring training to left-hander Cade Povich and will now head to the IL early in the season after throwing 2 2/3 innings in his lone relief appearance on Friday against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays in which he allowed two runs (one earned) and showed diminished velocity. It's unclear if he'll be able to come off the IL when he's eligible on April 13, but Suarez really isn't valuable in fantasy in deeper leagues unless he's in Baltimore's starting rotation.

Albert Suarez To Start In The Bullpen

Baltimore Orioles right-hander Albert Suarez lost out in the battle for the No. 5 starting rotation spot to left-hander Cade Povich and will now begin the 2025 season in the bullpen, according to general manager Mike Elias. It doesn't mean that Suarez won't be starting games for Baltimore this year, but his minimal fantasy value will take a hit in AL-only leagues to begin the season. The 35-year-old veteran appeared in a career-high 32 games (24 starts) a year ago and went 9-7 with a career-best 3.70 ERA (4.24 FIP) and 1.29 WHIP with 108 strikeouts and 43 walks in 133 2/3 innings pitched. Fantasy managers in AL-only leagues certainly shouldn't expect that kind of volume in 2025 in his second year in Baltimore. He figures to make most of his appearances this year in a long-relief role, but he'll still be a valuable swingman for the O's.

Albert Suarez, Cade Povich Competing For Open Rotation Spot

Baltimore Orioles starting pitchers Albert Suarez and Cade Povich are set to compete for the open spot in the rotation with Grayson Rodriguez (triceps) set to be sidelined through Opening Day. Earlier in the offseason, Suarez was initially expected to be the next man up, but given Povich's strong performance in spring training, he could surpass him on the depth chart. Last season, Suarez logged 133 2/3 innings in Baltimore and posted a 3.70 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP. He tallied 108 strikeouts with a modest 7.6 percent walk rate. Povich made his MLB debut last summer and held an underwhelming 5.20 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP across 79 2/3 innings. However, in spring training, Povich has tossed five shutout frames and allowed just one hit while tallying seven punchouts. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor Povich's development as he could move up the depth chart if he continues this excellent play. For now, both pitchers are solid late-round targets in AL-only formats.

Albert Suarez, Cade Povich Viewed As No. 6 and No. 7 Starters

Baltimore Orioles starting pitchers Albert Suarez and Cade Povich are viewed as the team's No. 6 and No. 7 starters. While this may keep them out of a job in the starting rotation to open the season, they could still compete for a long relief role during camp. Saurez is out of minor-league options and would likely remain on the Opening Day roster. However, given that Povich is only 24 years old, the team will likely opt to have him begin the season at Triple-A to continue his development. Last season, Suarez made 24 starts (32 games) and held a 3.70 ERA with a 1.29 WHIP. He tallied 108 punchouts. Povich struggled over his first 79 2/3 MLB innings, holding a high 5.20 ERA with a 1.43 WHIP. However, he has begun to flash high upside in spring training, which suggests he will likely be one of the first names called when the major league team needs more pitching depth. As a result, both pitchers should only be targeted in deeper AL-only formats for the time being.

Albert Suarez To Start Grapefruit League Opener

Baltimore Orioles manager Brandon Hyde announced that right-hander Albert Suarez will get the nod to start the Grapefruit League opener on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Suarez didn't break camp with the big-league squad last year as a non-roster invite at spring training but was called up early on and debuted on April 17. He made 32 appearances for Baltimore in 2024, including 24 starts, and had a 3.70 ERA in 133 2/3 innings. The 35-year-old veteran most likely will have an Opening Day roster spot because he's out of minor-league options, but he'll likely be in a relief role with Zach Eflin, Grayson Rodriguez, Charlie Morton, Dean Kremer and Tomoyuki Sugano locked into the starting rotation. Suarez doesn't have much swing-and-miss stuff on the mound, which will give him limited streaming appeal if he makes any starts again for the O's in 2025.
