Alex Faedo Expected To Open The Year On The Injured List
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Faedo (shoulder) is expected to start the season on the injured list due to a right-shoulder injury, according to MLB.com's Adam Berry. Manager Kevin Cash said Faedo had an MRI exam that didn't show anything "too alarming," but he will be shut down from throwing for a short period. Before his injury, the 29-year-old looked to be a favorite for the final spot in the bullpen because of his ability to pitch multiple innings, his track record in the big leagues, and the fact he has no minor-league options remaining. The former first-round pick out of Florida struggled with injuries with the Detroit Tigers before posting a 3.61 ERA with 55 strikeouts in 57 1/3 innings over 39 appearances as a reliever last year. If he can move past a shoulder injury that he also dealt with late last year, Faedo could be a valuable multi-inning reliever for the Rays. However, there's very little fantasy appeal.
Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Alex Faedo (shoulder) was seen throwing a live batting practice session at spring training on Wednesday. Faedo is embarking on his first year with the Rays after he was drafted 18th overall in 2017 by the Detroit Tigers out of the University of Florida. The 29-year-old didn't pan out with the Tigers in three MLB seasons after debuting in 2022 and he didn't pitch past August in 2024 due to a right-shoulder strain. He's apparently healthy now, though, as he tries to win an Opening Day roster spot in Tampa's bullpen. The fact that Faedo is out of minor-league options will give him a better chance to make the team out of spring training. He has a 5.00 ERA in 30 MLB starts but a 3.44 ERA as a reliever, so the Rays are hoping he can continue excelling out of the bullpen. Faedo won't be much of a fantasy asset, though, if he's in a middle-relief role.
ESPN's Jeff Passan reports that the Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Alex Faedo from the Detroit Tigers on Monday in exchange for minor-league catcher Enderson Delgado and cash considerations, according to sources. The Tigers designated Faedo for assignment after signing right-handed reliever Tommy Kahnle last week. Faedo was decent for the Tigers in his third big-league season in 2024, sporting a career-low 3.61 ERA (4.91 FIP) and 1.34 WHIP with 55 strikeouts and 28 walks in 57 1/3 innings pitched over only 37 appearances (six starts). Because the 29-year-old is out of minor-league options, if he's not on Tampa's major-league roster this year, he'll be subject to the waiver process again. The former 18th overall pick in 2017 out of the University of Florida hasn't lived up to his draft stock and has struggled as a starter, but he has a 3.44 ERA as a reliever and could be in line for some high-leverage bullpen work for the Rays.
According to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic, the Detroit Tigers have designated right-handed pitcher Alex Faedo for assignment. This transaction opened the roster spot for right-handed pitcher Tommy Kahnle, who the team signed earlier on Wednesday. Last season, Faedo spent most of his time operating out of the bullpen, as he made just six starts. Across 57 1/3 innings, the former first-round pick held a 3.61 ERA with a 1.34 WHIP. He struck out 55 batters while showing poor command with a high 11.4% walk rate. However, the Florida product was able to limit hard contact as he generated a strong 6.3% barrel rate and 34.4% hard-hit rate, which were both well above the average marks. Fantasy managers should expect Faedo to draw some interest on waivers as a long relief option.
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Alex Faedo (hip) has been activated from the 15-day injured list on Thursday. The right-hander will make his return after missing the last three weeks due to right hip inflammation. Before going down, Faedo was a solid contributor in the Tigers bullpen. He holds a 3.38 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and 29/13 K/BB ratio across 21 appearances. The expectation is that Faedo will return to his role as a long relief option out of the pen.
Alex Faedo To Make Another Rehab Appearance On Saturday
Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo (hip) is scheduled to make his second minor-league rehab appearance on Saturday for Triple-A Toledo. In his first rehab outing on Wednesday, Faedo was able to throw a scoreless inning. If the 28-year-old doesn't encounter any setbacks on Saturday, he could come off the injured list after that and rejoin Detroit's bullpen. Faedo was originally the 18th overall pick in 2017 out of Florida and came up threw the team's minor-league system as a starter before being moved to a full-time relief role this year. In 21 appearances out of the bullpen for the Tigers before his injury, Faedo had gone 3-1 with six holds, a 3.38 ERA, a 1.18 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB in 34 2/3 innings. At best, Faedo is an option in the deepest of holds leagues when he's healthy.
Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo made the team's Opening Day roster for the first time in his career. In addition, left-hander Joey Wentz made the team out of spring training. In large part due to injuries, the 28-year-old Faedo has had an uneven two seasons in the big leagues with Detroit. He's dealt with blister and nail issues, a back strain, hip pain and had Tommy John surgery. But the former first-rounder in 2017 out of Florida was healthy in the offseason and had a 1.35 spring training ERA. Faedo is expected to work in a long-relief role, which won't give him any real fantasy value, but if he can stay healthy, he could be an important piece for Detroit's pitching staff in 2024. In his 27 big-league outings (24 starts), Faedo has a 4.94 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 45 walks and 102 K's in 118 1/3 frames.
Detroit Tigers right-hander Alex Faedo will be moved from the starting rotation to the bullpen for now as a multi-inning reliever, according to manager A.J. Hinch. Faedo might have some "scheduled" relief outings of two to three innings and could also piggyback with left-hander Joey Wentz. It's still possible that Faedo makes a start or two in the final month of the regular season in September. The 27-year-old former first-round pick in 2017 out of Florida hasn't lived up to expectations and has gone 2-5 this year with a 4.98 ERA (5.10 FIP), 1.09 WHIP, 17 walks and 47 strikeouts in 56 innings pitched over his 11 starts for Detroit in his second big-league season. Faedo obviously will be losing what little fantasy value he had left in 2023.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Alex Faedo was on his game Tuesday night in Minnesota where he tossed five scoreless innings while allowing just one hit, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch against six strikeouts on the night. However, despite the excellent effort, Faedo was left with a no-decision as a five-run sixth inning propelled the Twins to a 5-3 victory in Tuesday's series opener. The results largely haven't been there for the former first-round pick this season but Faedo continues to see some positive regression kick in. He has now allowed just three earned runs over his last three starts spanning 15 2/3 innings while Tuesday marked his second scoreless outing in that time. The right-hander's 4.19 SIERA and 6.1% BB% suggest he's been much better than his 5.16 ERA might suggest.
Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Alex Faedo has been recalled to take the mound against the San Diego Padres on Sunday. It doesn't sound like the Tigers plan to move anyone out of their rotation. This move is probably just to give the rest of starters an extra day to rest. Faedo holds a 6.98 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, with 28/4 K/BB ratio through six starts with Detroit this season. Fantasy managers should look elsewhere for a streaming option for Sunday's slate.
