Aroldis Chapman Continues Incredible Campaign, Worth Viewing as the RP1?

Boston Red Sox left-handed closer Aroldis Chapman has not looked his age (38) at all in 2026 in his second year with the team. The veteran southpaw threw a scoreless inning with one hit allowed and one strikeout to close out the Kansas City Royals in a 4-3 victory, and he now has 12 saves, a minuscule 0.51 ERA (1.86 FIP) and 0.85 WHIP with 23 strikeouts and seven walks in 17 2/3 innings of relief in his 17th year in the big leagues. Surprisingly, Chapman has been one of the best relievers in baseball so far through the quarter mark of the 2026 season, and he's currently on a scoreless streak of 13 2/3 innings, a span in which he has allowed six hits, walked six, struck out 20, and recorded 10 saves for the BoSox. He currently ranks fifth in the majors with his 12 saves, but how much longer can he continue to outduel Father Time? With an xwOBA in the 68th percentile and a hard-hit rate in the 10th percentile, regression will most certainly come for the Cuban hurler eventually. His expected ERA also sits at 3.09 despite being in the 96th percentile in strikeout rate. Chapman still has enough swing-and-miss stuff to be a strong closing option for fantasy managers, but he's also a clear sell-high candidate.

Can Aroldis Chapman Sustain Hot Start to 2026?

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman is off to a strong start to the 2026 season, as he's pitched to a 1.17 ERA and 1.04 WHIP with eight strikeouts and four saves across his first eight appearances (7 2/3 innings). The 38-year-old was absolutely dominant in his first year with Boston in 2025, recording 32 saves and 85 strikeouts while pitching to a 1.17 ERA across 61 1/3 innings. While Chapman's surface-level numbers are excellent again, his underlying metrics are not quite at the same elite level they were last season. The veteran left-hander's average fastball velocity is down from 98.5 mph to 97.4 mph, and his strikeout rate has fallen from 37.3% to 26.7%. Chapman's walk rate, which he lowered to a career-best 6.6% in 2025, has returned to 10% in the early part of 2026. Chapman remains the unquestioned closer in Boston, and he's been effective thus far, so there's no reason for fantasy managers to panic. Still, he may not be in line to fully repeat his 2025 success in 2026.

Can Aroldis Chapman Maintain His Improved Walk Rate in 2026?

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman was utterly dominant in 2025, recording five wins, 32 saves, and 85 strikeouts across 61 1/3 innings while pitching to a 1.17 ERA and a 0.70 WHIP. Chapman has always been an excellent source of strikeouts, and he delivered with a 37.3% strikeout rate last year. The more surprising aspect of his profile was his massively improved command. After posting four consecutive seasons with a walk rate of at least 14.5%, the 38-year-old slashed his walk rate to 6.6% in 2025, by far the best mark of his 16-season MLB career. It seems likely that Chapman's walk rate will regress towards his career norm to some degree in 2026. Still, he can remain an elite fantasy closer even if he allows free passes to somewhere around 10% of the batters he faces. Barring a complete collapse in his skills in his age-38 season, Chapman should have a chance to provide high-end fantasy production for the second straight year.

Can Aroldis Chapman Repeat Resurgent 2025 Season?

After bouncing around the league for a few years without a stable ninth-inning role, Boston Red Sox left-hander Aroldis Chapman re-established himself as one of the best closers in baseball in 2025. Across 61 1/3 innings pitched (67 games), the 37-year-old posted a 5-3 record with a 1.17 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 85 strikeouts, and 32 saves. Chapman has always been a whiff machine, and he struck out batters at an excellent 37.3% clip in 2025. The biggest change in his profile this past season was control: After recording walk rates of at least 14.5% for four consecutive seasons, Chapman walked just 6.6% of the batters he faced last year. The Red Sox signed Chapman to a one-year contract extension with a vesting option for 2027 last September, so he appears to be locked in as the team's closer for 2026. If Chapman can post another season with even a single-digit walk rate in 2026, there's no reason to think he can't be one of the game's elite closers for a second straight season.

Aroldis Chapman Named AL Reliever of the Year

Boston Red Sox left-hander Aroldis Chapman was named the American League Reliever of the Year in 2025 for the second time in his career, with the first coming with the New York Yankees in 2019. Chapman defied Father Time this year to win the award at age 37 while also making his eighth career All-Star team. He led all qualified relievers with a 1.17 ERA and 0.70 WHIP in 61 1/3 innings for the BoSox. Opponents hit just .132 versus the veteran southpaw, the lowest average against any qualified reliever. Chapman retired 50 straight hitters at one point during the season, during a stretch that spanned over two months. Unbelievable, Chapman still averaged 99.8 mph with his fastball (ranked in the 98th percentile in baseball) in his 16th season in the big leagues. He proved with Boston this past season that he still has gas left in the tank in what has been a remarkable career.

Aroldis Chapman Bounces Back to Secure 30th Save

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman recorded his 30th save of the season in a 6-4 win over the New York Yankees on Sunday. Chapman was dominant in a 1-2-3 ninth inning, inducing two groundouts before striking out Jose Caballero swinging on a 101 mph fastball to end the game. After he uncharacteristically allowed an earned run in back-to-back appearances before Sunday, the star left-hander returned to form in throwing 10 of 11 pitches for strikes to help Boston avoid a sweep. Chapman has been spectacular during his age-37 campaign, having posted a 1.26 ERA with a .68 WHIP, 82 strikeouts, and 14 walks in 57 1/3 innings.

Aroldis Chapman Agrees to Contract Extension

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman has agreed to a one-year contract extension with the organization on Saturday. He'll get a one-year, $13.3 million extension that includes a mutual option for the 2027 season. Chapman has been outstanding with a 1.04 ERA, 0.67 WHIP, and a 74/14 K/BB ratio with 26 saves this season. Somehow, the 37-year-old flamethrower continues to get better with age. This seems like a good deal for Boston to lock up their stopper for at least one more season. Chapman needs to be rostered in all fantasy formats considering he has been arguably the best reliever in baseball.

Aroldis Chapman Available on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (back) is available to pitch out of the bullpen ahead of Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Twins, according to manager Alex Cora. This is good news after Chapman was pulled from Sunday's appearance due to back spasms. Chapman was unavailable on Monday, but is ready to pitch again. This doesn't sound like the type of issue that should linger or impact Chapman on the mound anymore. Fantasy managers should feel fine about plugging Chapman back into their lineups on Tuesday.

Aroldis Chapman Dealing with Back Tightness

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Aroldis Chapman (back) was pulled during Sunday's outing against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Chapman walked the first two batters he faced before getting Shohei Ohtani to fly out. After that, Chapman exited the game with the trainer without much clarity on the injury. According to Christopher Smith, Chapman was removed due to back tightness. Red Sox' manager Alex Cora said he doesn't believe Chapman will require a trip to the injured list and the southpaw should be considered day-to-day. Possibly, Chapman gets a few days off, which could mean closer by committee until he's ready to pitch again.

Aroldis Chapman Leaves with Apparent Injury on Sunday

Boston Red Sox closer Aroldis Chapman (undisclosed) exited his appearance against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Sunday with an undisclosed injury. The All-Star southpaw left the mound with a trainer in the eighth inning after walking two hitters and retiring Shohei Ohtani on a flyout. Chapman threw 11 pitches, only four of which were strikes, and experienced a dip in velocity. The 37-year-old's typical fastball has clocked in at 98.5 mph this season, but it only averaged 94.6 on Sunday. The Red Sox and fantasy managers are left to hope this isn't anything serious, as Chapman has thrived this season. He entered Sunday with a 1.31 ERA, a 0.77 WHIP, 61:11 K:BB, and 18 saves in 20 chances over 41 1/3 innings.
