Cincinnati Reds catcher Austin Wynns (shoulder) has been throwing to the bases and is scheduled to begin a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Sept. 17. Wynns was suffered a right teres major tear in his shoulder while trying to make a throw to third base against the Kansas City Royals on July 28. The 33-year-old is not eligible to come off the 60-day injured list until Sept. 27, which is just two days before the end of the 2024 regular season, so he's highly unlikely to appear in the big leagues for the rest of the year. Wynns, a former 10th-round pick by the Baltimore Orioles in 2013 out of Fresno State, has appeared in only seven games with the Reds in 2024 in his sixth year in the big leagues and has gone 7-for-19 (.368) with four doubles, two RBI and five strikeouts.
To make room on the 40-man roster for recent free-agent signing Frankie Montas, the Cincinnati Reds designated catcher Austin Wynns for assignment on Tuesday. Wynns signed a one-year, $950,000 with the Reds in December as catching depth. If the 33-year-old backstop clears waivers, he'll likely return to the Giants and try to earn a roster spot in spring training. Wynns spent the 2023 season with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and hit .208/.268/.277 with one home run and 10 RBI in 145 plate appearances in 51 games. Forty five of his games played came with the Rockies. In five big-league seasons, Wynns has a career .226 batting average with only 13 home runs, 61 RBI and 63 runs scored in 653 plate appearances.
The Cincinnati Reds signed free-agent catcher Austin Wynns to a one-year, $950,000 major-league deal on Thursday and designated outfielder T.J. Hopkins for assignment in a corresponding move. Wynns will head to Cincinnati to provide catching depth behind Tyler Stephenson and Luke Maile at the big-league level in 2024. The 33-year-old veteran bounced around the National League West in 2023 with the San Francisco Giants, Los Angeles Dodgers and Colorado Rockies and played in 51 games, going 27-for-130 (.208) with a home run, six doubles, 10 RBI and 11 runs scored in 145 plate appearances. Wynns will come into next year with zero fantasy appeal while hitting .226 with 13 home runs and 61 RBI in 231 games in his five years in the major leagues.
The Colorado Rockies have claimed catcher Austin Wynns off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. The Dodgers designated the 32-year-old for assignment on Sunday after appearing in six games and batting .154 with no home runs or stolen bases and adding two RBI across 14 plate appearances. Wynns gives the Rockies some more depth at the backstop position, as the club had just two catchers on their 40-man roster before the transaction. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect this to have any effect on fantasy baseball.
Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Austin Wynns will make his team debut Monday when he takes on the Mets and left-hander David Peterson. With Will Smith injured, the Dodgers signed Wynns on Sunday and he will make his debut just 24 hours later. The 32-year-old began his career with Baltimore but moved on to the Giants last season and even appeared in one game for them this season. Wynns is a career .230 hitter with 12 home runs, one stolen base, and a .609 OPS across 510 trips to the plate. Austin Barnes is likely to see the bulk of playing time as Smith sits on the 7-day injured list with a concussion but Wynns gets an opportunity to contribute out of the gate on Monday night.
The Baltimore Orioles optioned catcher Chance Sisco to Triple-A and purchased the contract of fellow catcher Austin Wynns. Sisco has had a dreadful year at the plate, slashing .154/.247/.185 over 23 games. He was serving as the team's backup catcher behind Pedro Severino, a role that Wynns will now assume. Wynns made his first start of the year on Monday against the Minnesota Twins and went 0-for-4.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Austin Wynns will not play Wednesday after being hit in the groin by a foul ball several days ago, per MLB.com's Joe Trezza. This is a precautionary measure to ensure that he is fully healed before taking the field again. Consider him day-to-day going forward.
The Baltimore Orioles have sent down infielder Steve Wilkerson and catcher Austin Wynns to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. This would likely allow catcher Chance Sisco and first baseman Chris Davis to rejoin the Orioles. Wilkerson and Wynns should not be owned in any fantasy formats.
Baltimore Orioles catcher Austin Wynns went 1-for-3 with a single and an RBI in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the Rays. Wynns has posted an impressive .412 batting average with two home runs and six RBI since the start of the second half of the season, but those numbers have come in a limited 19 plate appearances. Until he gets more playing time, Wynns is not worth a roster spot in fantasy leagues.
