C.J. Culpepper Fantasy Stats

Minnesota Twins right-handed pitching prospect C.J. Culpepper has been quite impressive since returning from the 60-day IL at Double-A Wichita. Culpepper was sidelined for the majority of the first half due to an undisclosed injury. He had a short rehab assignment with Low-A and High-A and was officially returned to Double-A on June 14. Through his first five starts since returning (13 2/3 innings), the right-hander has posted a near-perfect 0.66 ERA with a 1.10 WHIP. During this stretch, Culpepper has struck out 15 hitters and allowed only five walks. Although he has only logged four innings in one outing, he has shown high upside and appears to have recovered from his injury. Last season, the No. 10-ranked prospect in the system logged 21 innings with Double-A to the tune of a 4.71 ERA. Given the time he missed, he will likely spend the entire second half with Double-A.

The right-hander has had a hard time increasing his workload during camp and is behind schedule. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status as he may not be sidelined for too long in the season. Last summer, Culpepper opened the season with High-A Cedar Rapids and was then promoted to Double-A. Across 37 1/3 innings at High-A, Culpepper posted a strong 2.89 ERA with a 1.07 WHIP. He held an 11:43 BB:K and allowed just one home run. Through his first taste of Double-A, the 23-year-old took a step back as he posted a much higher 4.71 ERA with a 1.24 WHIP. When Culpepper returns to action, he will need to improve at Double-A before reaching Triple-A St. Paul.

Across 27 innings at High-A, the 22-year-old has posted a 2.63 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, and 28:10 K:BB ratio this season. This is a big improvement compared to his 4.99 ERA and 1.41 WHIP he held through 39 innings at High-A last summer. MLB Pipeline considers Culpepper the number eight prospect in the Minnesota system and projects him to reach the majors sometime next season. Dynasty managers should continue to monitor his progress, as he should be nearing a promotion to Double-A.
