The New York Mets officially recalled right-handed pitching prospect Christian Scott from Triple-A Syracuse and designated right-hander Matt Festa for assignment in a corresponding move. It was announced earlier this week that Scott would be rejoining New York's starting rotation to face the division-rival Washington Nationals on Wednesday. The 25-year-old could stick around in the Mets' rotation beyond the All-Star break if he holds his own, making him worth a waiver-wire pickup in most fantasy formats for his upside. While he had an ERA just south of 4.00 and didn't win any of his first five major-league starts earlier this year, he walked just six and fanned 25 in 27 2/3 innings of work. At Syracuse, he went 3-0 with a 2.76 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 55:12 K:BB in nine starts. Scott's combination of control and high whiff rate make him very attractive moving forward.
Detroit Tigers second baseman Colt Keith had the first two-homer game of his career in Friday's narrow win over the hosting Cincinnati Reds. After launching a towering homer off Reds right-hander Carson Spiers to right-center field, extending the Tigers' lead to 2-0 in the third inning, Keith left the yard again in the fifth frame to give Detroit a 4-0 lead. It still hasn't been a great rookie season overall from the 22-year-old lefty-hitting infielder, who's slashing .240/.285/.361 with seven big flies, nine doubles, 28 RBI, and four stolen bases across 281 plate appearances in 2024. With that said, Keith is picking up some steam with three consecutive multi-hit efforts.
Philadelphia Phillies shortstop Trea Turner put on an incredible offensive display, hitting two home runs in Friday's 8-6 victory over the division-rival Atlanta Braves. After hitting a 459-foot two-run homer off Braves left-hander Max Fried to left field to extend the Phillies' lead to 3-0 in the fourth inning, Turner tagged the southpaw once more for a solo shot to push the advantage to 5-2 in the sixth frame. The 31-year-old All-Star infielder has been amazing for fantasy managers when healthy this season, batting a torrid .341 (71-for-208) with seven long balls, 22 RBI, 43 runs scored, and 11 stolen bases over 49 games. Since coming off the injured list on June 17, Turner has hit safely in 14 of his 17 outings.
Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve (hand, wrist) left the game early on Friday against the hosting Minnesota Twins after being hit by a pitch on his left/hand wrist area. Altuve was removed from the contest in eighth inning after talking with a team trainer. The 34-year-old veteran helped his fantasy managers by going 2-for-4 with an RBI and a strikeout in the game before hitting the showers early. He'll likely undergo X-rays at the stadium, and we should have a better idea of the severity of his injury later Friday night or by Saturday morning. Altuve has been a beast this year, hitting .308 with 13 homers and 13 steals in 2024, so losing him for any amount of time would be a big blow for the 'Stros and fantasy managers. Mauricio Dubon replaced Altuve at second on Friday and would likely become the team's primary second baseman if Altuve goes on the injured list. UPDATE: X-rays revealed no fracture, and Altuve was diagnosed with a left-hand contusion.
Arizona Diamondbacks left-hander Jordan Montgomery (knee) will throw on flat ground on Saturday, according to manager Torey Lovullo. Montgomery still has some inflammation in his right knee, but Lovullo said the team is anticipating he'll be good enough to throw on Saturday. The 31-year-old southpaw could start throwing off a mound again soon if his throwing session goes well this weekend, but Montgomery won't rejoin Arizona's starting rotation until after the All-Star break in mid-July. After helping the Texas Rangers win their first-ever World Series championship last fall, Montgomery signed with Arizona late this spring and has been a disaster in his first 13 starts, posting a 6.44 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with 45 K's and 23 walks in 65 2/3 innings. He currently has a career-low 15.1% strikeout rate and has seen his walk rate increase from 4.9% in 2023 to 7.7%.
Pittsburgh Pirates first baseman Rowdy Tellez smashed two home runs and tallied five RBI in the Pirates' 14-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday. Tellez now have seven HR on the season with a .683 OPS. After a slow start to the season, the lefty has started to pick things up with a .961 OPS over the last 28 days. Tellez has mainly been in a platoon role this season and will continue to stay in a platoon role while on the Pirates, hitting for a .691 OPS against righties and a .258 OPS against lefties. With his recent resurgence at the plate, fantasy managers may want to continue getting him into their starting lineups and capitalizing on his hot streak. He should be expected to be out of the lineup the next two days against Mets starters David Peterson and Sean Manaea. He should be back in the lineup Sunday against Mets rookie Christian Scott.
Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Bryan Reynolds had a gigantic day at the plate, recording four hits and six RBI with two home runs in the Pirates' 14-2 win over the New York Mets on Friday. Reynolds improved his OPS to .831 and now has 16 HR on the season. The switch-hitter has been very good since June, notching a hit in all but two games since June 1st, going 42-124 with nine HR. Reynolds continues to get better as the season goes on and has an xwOBA in the 79th percentile. Fantasy managers should continue to start Reynolds as often as possible. He'll continue to get decent chances to weekend against Mets starters David Peterson, Sean Manaea and Christian Scott.
Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Paul Skenes was dominant yet again on Friday, racking up eight strikeouts in seven innings during the Pirates' 14-2 win over the New York Mets. Skenes improved his record to 5-0 and lowered his ERA to 2.12 after dominating the Mets. The rookie sensation also threw a season-high 107 pitches. Friday's strong outing only helps Skenes' case for NL Rookie of the Year as he starts to build a gap between him and the field. The 22-year-old will have one more scheduled start before the All-Star break, currently scheduled for next Wednesday in Milwaukee against the Brewers. Fantasy managers and DFS players should continue to target Skenes whenever possible.
Chicago Cubs starting pitcher Justin Steele threw his first career complete game on Friday afternoon in the Cubs' 5-1 win over the Los Angeles Angels. Steele struck out seven and allowed just one run on two hits, improving his record to 1-3. The lefty has now recorded six straight quality starts and has lowered his ERA to 2.95 on the season. After missing all of April dealing with a hamstring issue, Steele has become one of the more reliable arms in the Cubs' rotation. He'll get one more start before the All-Star break and that start is currently scheduled for next Thursday in Baltimore against the Orioles. It will be a tough test given Baltimore's track record against lefties in 2024 and fantasy managers may want to temper expectations for Steele that night.
New York Yankees second baseman Gleyber Torres (undisclosed) was removed early from Friday night's game against the Boston Red Sox after injuring himself beating out an infield single in the bottom of the fourth inning. Torres was replaced by Oswaldo Cabrera after being removed. The Yankees have yet to give detail on what Torres' injury is but more detail is expected to be released upon the game's completion and Torres should be considered day-to-day for now. The 27-year-old had dealt with groin issues in June. Torres had been subpar at the plate this season, hitting for just an 81 OPS+ in 312 AB. If he is to miss any time then it should be expected that Cabrera will receive Torres' playing time. UPDATE: Torres left with right-groin tightness. He was examined by a team physician and there are no plans for imaging at this time, suggesting it's a minor injury.
Free-agent reliever Carl Edwards Jr. agreed on a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres on Friday, according to sources. Edwards, 32, most recently spent time with the Washington Nationals and Chicago Cubs but he hasn't appeared in a big-league game since 2023 with the Nationals, when he went 1-3 with a 3.69 ERA, a 1.52 WHIP, two saves, 24 strikeouts and 17 walks in 31 2/3 relief innings. The 32-year-old right-hander had a sharp 1.85 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, seven saves, 22 strikeouts and 15 walks for Triple-A Iowa this year before being released by the Cubs in June. Edwards is expected to be assigned to Triple-A El Paso soon and will operate as right-handed relief depth for the Friars for the rest of the season. He's always had plenty of strikeout upside (career 28.2% K rate) but will need to show better control to resurface in the majors in 2024 with San Diego.
