Ian Seymour Strikes Out Nine On Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays starting pitching prospect Ian Seymour tossed six innings of one-run ball on Thursday evening while striking out nine batters. He allowed five hits and four free passes. This was another strong outing for the 25-year-old, as he has not allowed more than two earned runs in a start since July 11. During this dominant stretch, the former second-round pick has held a 2.37 ERA, 1.18 WHIP, and a 13:47 BB:K ratio. This is an excellent sign, as Seymour posted a near-identical 2.36 ERA and a 0.83 WHIP at Double-A earlier this summer. Given how well Seymour has looked at Triple-A Durham this summer, he should be in contention to spend time in the majors next summer.

Brett Kerry Strikes Out Season-High 14 Batters On Thursday

Los Angeles Angels starting pitching prospect Brett Kerry struck out a season-high 14 batters on Thursday evening. He tossed seven innings of two-run ball with just one hit and two free passes. Since the start of the month, Kerry has showcased elite swing-and-miss potential with an eye-catching 47 punchouts across 32 innings. During this stretch, he held a solid 3.62 ERA and a 0.96 WHIP. Through his first extended look at Triple-A ball, the 25-year-old has struggled to find consistency as he sits with an overall 5.68 ERA and a 1.45 WHIP through 77 innings this summer. If he continues to showcase this elite strikeout potential he could earn a late-season taste of the major leagues.

Chase DeLauter Placed On Minor-League Injured List

The Cleveland Guardians announced on Friday that outfield prospect Chase DeLauter (hamstring) was placed on the seven-day minor-league injured list at Triple-A Columbus due to a right-hamstring strain. In a corresponding move, the team reinstated right-hander Nic Enright (undisclosed) from the seven-day IL. DeLauter, the club's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, had just been promoted to Columbus and was on track to potentially receive his first big-league call-up with rosters expanding in September, but that probably won't be the case now. The 22-year-old former 16th overall pick in 2022 out of James Madison University has had trouble avoiding injuries in his two pro seasons and only played in 30 games for Double-A Akron, slashing .252/.328/.441 with five home runs and 16 RBI. If he can stay healthy in 2025, he should make his major-league debut at some point in Cleveland.

Alex Cobb  • SP  •  Guardians

Alex Cobb Expected To Start On Sunday

Cleveland Guardians veteran right-hander Alex Cobb (finger) is expected to come off the 15-day injured list to start on Sunday against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Progressive Field. Cobb hasn't been able to stay healthy all year, but this time he's recovering from a mere cracked fingernail on his pitching hand. Because his injury wasn't very serious, he did not end up making a rehab start in the minor leagues. The 36-year-old made just two starts with the Guards after being acquired in a trade from the San Francisco Giants at the trade deadline. In those two starts, he yielded six runs (five earned) while walking three and striking out four in 10 1/3 innings versus the Twins and Cubs. The matchup against Pittsburgh is a friendly one, but Cobb doesn't have much fantasy upside in the strikeout department these days and should only be a streaming candidate in deeper leagues.

Vinnie Pasquantino  • 1B  •  Royals

Royals Officially Place Vinnie Pasquantino On Injured List

The Kansas City Royals officially placed first baseman Vinnie Pasquantino (thumb) on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a right-thumb fracture and recalled infielder Nick Loftin from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. Pasquantino suffered the serious injury during a collision at first base late in Thursday's loss to the Houston Texans, and with an expected recovery timetable of six to eight weeks, the 26-year-old is most likely to miss the rest of the 2024 season unless the Royals make the postseason and go on a deep playoff run. Catcher Salvador Perez should see plenty of time at first base now in KC, which will push Freddy Fermin to more starts behind the plate. The Royals can also use Loftin at the position down the stretch. Pasquantino had a successful 2024 campaign, hitting a career-high 19 home runs while driving in 97 runs in 496 at-bats.

Kyle Tucker  • RF  •  Astros

Kyle Tucker Could Return To Face Reds Next Week

Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker (shin), who took live batting practice on Friday against a minor-league pitcher, provided a long update on his condition and said it's an "option" for him to play in next week's series at Great American Ball Park against the Cincinnati Reds, but he's more likely to return during the next homestand that begins next Friday, Sept. 6. It's possible that Tucker will go on a minor-league rehab assignment before coming off the 60-day injured list, but he prefers not to have one. In addition to taking BP on Friday, the 27-year-old also ran full speed again, although the final box he must check is running the bases at full speed. Tucker has been out somehow since early June with a mere right-shin contusion, but he now has a firm timetable for a return right around the corner. He should not be floating around on any waiver wires.

Alex Bregman  • 3B  •  Astros

Alex Bregman Absent From Astros Lineup With More Elbow Soreness

Houston Astros third baseman Alex Bregman (elbow) is not in the team's starting lineup on Friday at Minute Maid Park against the Kansas City Royals. Right-elbow soreness has returned for Bregman, pushing him to the bench for the second game of the series against Houston. This is pretty concerning for the Astros and fantasy managers after the 30-year-old missed five games earlier this month with swelling in his right elbow. After starting each of the team's last nine games, the issue has returned, and it's unclear when he'll be able to join the starting lineup. Bregman did admit that his elbow issues would be something he'd need to manage the rest of the year. Since missing five straight games, he's gone 9-for-36 (.250) with two homers, two RBI and eight K's in nine games. Mauricio Dubon is at third and batting ninth on Friday against Royals veteran right-hander Seth Lugo.

Corey Seager  • SS  •  Rangers

Corey Seager Getting A Breather Against A's

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager will sit out of Friday's series opener against the division-rival Oakland Athletics at Globe Life Field. With Seager getting a day off, Ezequiel Duran will make a start at shortstop and will bat eighth against A's left-hander JP Sears. Duran won't have much DFS upside near the bottom of Texas' lineup, but he is hitting .455 with a 1.026 OPS and an RBI in 11 career at-bats against Sears. The 30-year-old Seager will get a day off after starting in each of the team's last 12 games. He reached a pretty big milestone in Thursday's contest against the Chicago White Sox, too, clubbing the 200th home run of his career. The two-time World Series MVP has been great in the month of August, batting .293 (29-for-99) with 11 long balls, five doubles, 24 RBI and 16 runs scored in 24 games played. He's a must-start anytime he's in the lineup.

Rafael Devers  • 3B  •  Red Sox

Rafael Devers Returns As DH On Friday

Boston Red Sox third baseman Rafael Devers (shoulders) is back in action for Friday's series opener against the Detroit Tigers and right-hander Casey Mize at Comerica Park, serving as the designated hitter and batting cleanup. Rookie Nick Sogard will get another start at third and will hit seventh for the BoSox. Devers has been dealing with issues in both of his shoulders for most of the year and took the last three days off to rest up this week. Now that he's back, fantasy managers will want to get him back in their lineups in redraft leagues against Mize, who will be making his first start in two months due to a hamstring strain. Hopefully, the time off this week can break Devers out of his current slump at the plate. The 27-year-old Dominican has gone 10-for-43 (.233) in his last 11 games, although he does have three home runs and eight RBI in that span.

Jackson Chourio  • RF  •  Brewers

Jackson Chourio Out For Game 2 After Injuring His Ankle

Milwaukee Brewers rookie outfielder Jackson Chourio (ankle) will not play in the second game of Friday's doubleheader against the division-rival Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park after he rolled his right ankle in Game 1. Chourio will receive some treatment and more tests as a precaution, but it sounds like the Brewers think he avoided a long-term injury. Milwaukee is going with Sal Frelick, Blake Perkins and Garrett Mitchell from left to right, respectively, in the nightcap. The 20-year-old injured his ankle running to first base in the fifth inning earlier on Friday but remained in the contest and went 2-for-5 with a double and a strikeout out of the leadoff spot in the 10-inning win. Fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Chourio is out on Saturday, but as of now, the impressive rookie shouldn't be forced to miss extended time.

Kyle Tucker  • RF  •  Astros

Kyle Tucker Taking Live Batting Practice On Friday

Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker (shin) is taking live batting practice against a minor-league pitcher at Minute Maid Park before Friday's game against the Kansas City Royals. The only box left to check for Tucker now is to run the bases full speed. He hasn't played since June 3, when he fouled a ball off his leg and suffered a shin contusion. But as long as Tucker can run the bases at full speed soon, he should return to Houston's starting lineup in early September. When healthy, the 27-year-old left-handed-hitting right fielder is one of the best players in baseball. The former fifth overall pick in 2015 has made the All-Star team each of the last three seasons and was hitting .266 (57-for-214) with 19 home runs, 40 RBI and 10 stolen bases already through just 60 games before his unfortunate injury. He could be a difference-maker the final few weeks of the season for fantasy managers.

Andrew McCutchen  • DH  •  Pirates

Pirates Reinstate Andrew McCutchen From Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates announced on Friday that they reinstated outfielder/designated hitter Andrew McCutchen (knee) from the 10-day injured list and placed right-hander Ben Heller (shoulder) on the 15-day IL in a corresponding move. The Pirates haven't released their starting lineup for Friday's contest versus the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field, but McCutchen is likely to be in it against right-hander Ben Lively as the DH. The 37-year-old veteran didn't need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment after missing two weeks due to inflammation in his left knee. He'll be returning to a .235/.336/.405 slash line with 16 home runs, 40 RBI and 59 runs scored in his 378 at-bats this year. Fantasy managers will be hoping he can pick up where he left off in August after going 11-for-30 (.367) with three homers and 10 RBI from Aug. 2 through Aug. 16.

Casey Mize  • SP  •  Tigers

Casey Mize Set Up To Start Friday

The Detroit Tigers designated left-hander Joey Wentz for assignment on Friday, opening up a spot on the 40-man roster for the return of right-hander Casey Mize (hamstring) from the 60-day injured list. The Tigers haven't officially named a starter for their game on Friday at Comerica Park against the Boston Red Sox, but it's expected to be Mize. The 27-year-old won't be a recommended streaming option on Friday evening against the visiting BoSox, mainly because he's returning after missing two months due to a hamstring strain, even if he posted a 2.63 ERA with 17 strikeouts and only four walks in 13 2/3 innings with Triple-A Toledo in his four minor-league rehab starts. The former first overall pick in 2018 out of Auburn deserves attention in deeper-mixed fantasy leagues now that he's back. He's gone 2-6 with a 4.23 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and a weak 16.8% strikeout rate in his 16 starts in 2024.

Austin Hays  • LF  •  Phillies

Austin Hays Takes A Seat Against Atlanta

Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Austin Hays will start on the bench for Friday's showdown against the division-rival Atlanta Braves at Citizens Bank Park. With Hays on the bench, Brandon Marsh will occupy left field and will hit seventh, while Johan Rojas draws into the lineup in center field and will bat ninth against Braves right-hander Reynaldo Lopez. Marsh is hitting .125 in eight career at-bats against Lopez, while Rojas hasn't recorded a hit against Lopez in his five at-bats. Since returning from a hamstring strain on Aug. 23, Hays has gone 5-for-21 (.238) with two doubles, an RBI and five strikeouts in six games. The Phils acquired him from the Baltimore Orioles to platoon on left field with Marsh, and so far in his 16 games with the NL East leaders, he's hit a mediocre .254 (15-for-59) with a homer, four doubles and five RBI in 61 plate appearances.

Alec Bohm  • 3B  •  Phillies

Alec Bohm Not In Friday's Lineup

Philadelphia Phillies third baseman Alec Bohm (hand) is out of the team's starting lineup for Friday's contest at Citizens Bank Park against the division-rival Atlanta Braves. Edmundo Sosa will take over third-base duties while batting eighth, while right fielder Nick Castellanos will take over cleanup duties for the Phillies against Braves right-hander Reynaldo Lopez. Bohm injured his left hand during a swing in the first inning of Thursday's series opener against Atlanta and was removed from the game, but X-rays on the 28-year-old All-Star's hand came back negative. Consider him day-to-day for now and check to see if he'll be able to return for Saturday's game. Not only has Castellanos been swinging some hot lumber of late, but he's hitting .324 with an .828 OPS and three RBI in a big sample size of 37 career at-bats against Lopez. He'll surely be a popular DFS play on Friday, especially in the four-hole for Philly.

Jordan Walker  • RF  •  Cardinals

Jordan Walker Back With Cardinals

The St. Louis Cardinals recalled outfielder Jordan Walker from Triple-A Memphis on Friday and designated veteran outfielder Tommy Pham for assignment in a corresponding move. The Cardinals brought Walker up from the minors earlier in August as well, but he went just 1-for-11 in six games before being sent back to the farm. The 22-year-old right-handed slugger should be with St. Louis the rest of the year with rosters expanding in September, but he's likely to be on the short side of a platoon against left-handed pitchers. The former 21st overall pick in 2020 was once one of the team's top prospects and hit .276 with 16 home runs in 117 games in his rookie season in 2023, but he's slashed .145/.228/.232 in 24 big-league games in 2024 with 21 strikeouts and no homers. Walker will be looking to turn things around in the season's final month to gain some positive momentum for 2025.

Tommy Pham  • CF

Tommy Pham Designated For Assignment

The St. Louis Cardinals designated outfielder Tommy Pham for assignment on Friday and recalled outfielder Jordan Walker from Triple-A Memphis in a corresponding move. It was announced on Thursday that the Cardinals were looking to put the veteran Pham on waivers for some financial relief while also giving some younger players more playing time in the outfield for the final month of the season. The 36-year-old is now off the team's 40-man roster, but he could be claimed by a team in postseason contention looking for a veteran presence on their roster. At best, though, he'll probably be just a platoon player against left-handed pitching, like he was with St. Louis. Since being acquired at the deadline from the Chicago White Sox, Pham disappointed with the Cardinals, going 14-for-68 (.206) with two homers, 12 RBI and 16 strikeouts in 23 games played.

Brandon Lowe  • 2B  •  Rays

Brandon Lowe Out Against A Lefty

Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Brandon Lowe will retreat to the bench for Friday's series opener at Tropicana Field against the visiting San Diego Padres with a left-hander starting on the mound. Jose Caballero will start at the keystone and bat fifth against Padres veteran left-hander Martin Perez. Taylor Walls is at shortstop and in the eight-hole. Lowe is actually hitting .315 against left-handed pitchers this year, but in a small sample size of only 54 at-bats. Three of his 16 homers on the year have come against southpaws. He's also gone just 5-for-36 (.139) with three doubles and 15 strikeouts in his last nine games dating back to Aug. 19. Lowe needs to be on fantasy benches right now. Caballero is really only useful to fantasy managers for his speed, as he currently leads the league with 37 stolen bases and has also been caught stealing a league-high 13 times.

Jonathan Aranda  • 1B  •  Rays

Jonathan Aranda Recalled By Rays

The Tampa Bay Rays recalled infielder/designated hitter Jonathan Aranda from Triple-A Durham on Friday and optioned outfielder Kameron Misner to Durham in a corresponding move. Aranda, who was expected to be a big part of Tampa's lineup before the start of the regular season, has only played in 18 games at the big-league level in his third year in the majors, going 10-for-47 (.213) with a homer, two doubles, three RBI and 14 strikeouts in 52 plate appearances. Part of the reason he's been away from the major-league club for so long is that he missed several months while in the minors due to an oblique strain. The 26-year-old was producing at the plate for the Bulls since returning from the injured list, and he may be worth a look in deeper fantasy leagues if he gets regular playing time for Tampa in the final month of the regular season.

Sean Reid-Foley  • SP  •  Mets

Sean Reid-Foley Unlikely To Return This Year

The Athletic's Tim Britton writes that it's looking unlikely that New York Mets right-hander Sean Reid-Foley (shoulder) will be able to return this year. Reid-Foley has been out since June with a right-shoulder impingement. He was attempting to make a return in early August but was laboring with his command during a minor-league rehab assignment and was shut down two weeks ago to allow him to build up strength in his shoulder. The fact that Reid-Foley hasn't resumed throwing makes it all but official that he won't make it back in the final month of the season in September. The 29-year-old has already missed more than 60 days and could be moved to the 60-day injured list if the Mets need more roster space. Reid-Foley pitched well in 23 appearances out of the bullpen earlier this year before his injury, allowing four unearned runs, although he also walked 14 and struck out 25 in 21 2/3 innings.
