Jarren Duran Resting on Tuesday in Houston

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran will get a breather in the early going on Tuesday for a matchup at Daikin Park against the Houston Astros, according to MLB.com. With Duran starting on the bench, Masataka Yoshida draws into the lineup as Boston's designated hitter and will bat third against Astros right-hander Hunter Brown. Duran could use a break early on in 2026, as he's gone 2-for-13 (.154) with an RBI, two runs scored, two stolen bases, four walks, and four strikeouts in 18 plate appearances over four games played. He has gone hitless in the last three games after picking up two hits on Opening Day last week. Fantasy managers shouldn't be concerned at all with Duran's slow start just yet. Yoshida is in a nice lineup spot for DFS, but the matchup is a difficult one against one of the best young right-handers in the game. He's also hitless in six career at-bats versus Brown.

Jarren Duran Could Hit the Bench Against Lefties

MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo suggests that Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran could be out of the left field and designated hitter mix this year against left-handed pitchers. Wilyer Abreu is expected to be in right field every day, and Ceddanne Rafaela is expected to patrol center field regularly, with Roman Anthony and Duran swapping between left field and DH against right-handed pitchers. That's if the 29-year-old Duran isn't traded before the start of the 2026 regular season. The former seventh-rounder in 2018 out of California State Long Beach hit just .211/.260/.340 with a .600 OPS and three of his 16 home runs against southpaws in 209 plate appearances, as opposed to hitting .277/.363/.488 with an .852 OPS versus righties. Fantasy managers might want to forget about Duran being a 20-20 candidate if he's not playing every day in Boston.

Royals Unlikely to Land Brendan Donovan, Jarren Duran in Trade

According to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, the Kansas City Royals are unlikely to land either of the two hitters they have been pursuing in trade talks, Brendan Donovan of the St. Louis Cardinals, or Jarren Duran of the Boston Red Sox. Through the winter, both the Cardinals and Red Sox have been listening to offers for these two players, but have yet to strike a deal. However, Rosenthal believes that the Royals appear to be out of the running to bolster their lineup ahead of spring training. Donovan is a super-utility infielder who turned in a productive 2025 campaign, posting a .287/.353/.422 line with 10 home runs and three stolen bases. Duran took a step back in 2025 as he held a lower .256/.332/.442 line compared to the impressive .285/.342/.492 slash line he held in 2024. With the Royals likely missing out on both bats, managers should expect Jonathan India to remain the primary second baseman heading into camp, while Lane Thomas, Kyle Isbel, and Jac Caglianone hold the positions in the outfield. This is an excellent sign for former top prospect Caglianone, as he will face even less competition for a full-time role.

Jarren Duran "Remains a Likely Trade Candidate"

The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey reports that "at least one person with the Red Sox suggested this week that there's still an opportunity to trade from the outfield group," and that outfielder Jarren Duran "remains a likely trade candidate." Boston has at least four capable outfielders currently on the roster between Duran, Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela. While the Red Sox could simply prioritize outfield depth and keep all four, the team's needs elsewhere on the roster could necessitate a trade. Across 696 plate appearances with Boston in 2025, Duran posted a .256/.332/.442 slash line with 16 home runs, 84 RBI, 86 runs scored, and 24 stolen bases. He's entering his age-29 season and will remain under team control through 2028. A Duran trade could potentially provide a playing time boost for Abreu, Rafaela, and Red Sox designated hitter Masataka Yoshida.

Royals Still Interested in Trading for Jarren Duran

The Kansas City Royals are still interested in trading for Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran, but only if Boston lowers their asking price, according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. The Royals have signed Lane Thomas in free agency and also acquired Isaac Collins from the Milwaukee Brewers, but they remain open to adding another outfielder. KC believes they'd have to give up left-hander Cole Ragans to land Duran. The Royals see Ragans as a player with greater value as a potential Game 1 starter in a playoff series. Both Ragans and Ruan are under team control for three more seasons, with Ragans under contract for a combined $12 million the next two years and Duran for $7.75 million in 2026. If the Royals were to land Duran, he'd play left field with Jac Caglianone getting most of the playing time in right. The 29-year-old regressed offensively and defensively in 2025, slashing .256/.332/.442 with 16 homers and 24 steals in 157 games, but he's still a highly coveted commodity with 20-20 potential that figures to be moved this offseason.

Red Sox Likely to Have High Asking Price on Jarren Duran

ESPN's Jeff Passan writes that the Boston Red Sox are valuing outfielder Jarren Duran more like the seven-win player of 2024 than the four-win version in 2025. The Red Sox "can hold out for a big return" because they don't have to trade him. Although the 29-year-old isn't the best defensive asset, he has plenty of trade value because he's still in his 20s and has three years of club control. Duran also has elite bat and foot speed, and a good arm. He has ranked third in baseball the last three years at plus-23 runs due to his elite baserunning skills. Duran might have had a bit of a down year in 2025, slashing .256/.332/.442 with 16 home runs, 84 RBI, 86 runs scored, and 24 steals in 620 at-bats, but he's still one of the top all-around position players in the league. Passan predicts a 50% chance Duran will be dealt this offseason, with the Tigers, Royals, Giants, Pirates, Phillies, Mets, Reds, and Diamondbacks all being potential suitors.

Red Sox Think Jarren Duran Needs a Fresh Start

It would be a huge surprise if Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is with the team in spring training next year in Fort Myers, Fla., in the opinion of Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. Boston is looking for an upgrade over Duran and thinks he "needs a fresh start." The BoSox are trying to deal from a position of strength to acquire some starting pitching, as they already have prospect Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela in the outfield. The 29-year-old Duran isn't a great defensive outfielder, and he took a step back in 2025 after hitting .285 with a career-high 21 home runs and 34 stolen bases while leading the league in doubles (48) and triples (14). He led the league in triples (13) again in 2025 but regressed to slash .256/.332/.442 with 16 homers, 84 RBI, 86 runs, and 24 steals in 157 regular-season games. Despite his defensive limitations and lack of high-end power, Duran will be an attractive contributor across all roto categories, regardless of where he's playing in 2026.

Jarren Duran Not in Boston's Long-Term Plans?

The Athletic's Jim Bowden writes that Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran's name "keeps coming up in trade rumors," and it now "sounds like the Red Sox will move on from him this winter." Boston must envision their future outfield as Wilyer Abreu in right field, Ceddanne Rafaela in center field, and Roman Anthony in left. Duran has plenty of appeal, as he slashed .256/.332/.442 and led the league in triples for the second straight season while posting 4.6 bWAR in 2025. He was more productive in 2024, though, leading the league with 48 doubles and 14 triples and also hitting 21 home runs and stealing 34 bases. Making Duran more attractive is the fact that he's controllable through the 2028 campaign, so Boston is going to have a high asking price for him. Bowden lists the Phillies, Dodgers, Tigers, Guardians, and Rangers as teams that would love to acquire him.

Jarren Duran Sitting Against Lefty

Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran will sit out Saturday against New York Yankees left-hander Max Fried. Rob Refsnyder will take Duran's place in left field and hit cleanup. While the lefty-swinging Duran has enjoyed another productive season this year, he hasn't posed much of a threat against same-handed pitchers. Southpaws have limited him to a weak .209/.255/.326 line in 201 trips to the plate. The right-handed Refsnyder, on the other hand, has handled lefties throughout his career, and he has slashed an excellent .312/.398/.587 over 128 plate appearances against them this season.

Jarren Duran Reportedly Staying Put at Trade Deadline

The Boston Red Sox aren't planning to trade outfielder Jarren Duran before the July 31 deadline, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today. There has been speculation about Duran changing teams by the deadline, though a deal seems more likely to come together during the offseason (if at all). While the 28-year-old hasn't matched his production from 2024, he has been an integral part of a Boston team that's in the thick of the AL playoff race. Duran went 3-for-4 with two triples, a double, two RBI, and a run scored in a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday. He's now 19-for-65 (.292) with three homers, 16 RBI, and 12 runs in 19 games this month. Overall, Duran has slashed .259/.326/.442 with nine HRs, 55 RBI, 58 runs, and 16 steals in 467 trips to the plate.
