The Washington Nationals signed right-handed pitcher Jordan Weems to a minor league deal on Sunday. Weems will be invited to spring training, if there is one in 2022. The 29-year-old has played 11 seasons professionally, but he didn't debut in the big leagues until the shortened 2020 campaign, when he had a 3.21 ERA and 1.21 WHIP in 14 innings over nine relief appearances for the Oakland Athletics. Weems was much worse last year, allowing 10 earned runs in just 5 2/3 innings with the Athletics and Arizona Diamondbacks in seven outings out of the bullpen. He also had a rough 7.31 ERA in 28 1/3 innings for the Triple-A affiliates of the A's and D-backs. Weems will be competing for a spot in the big league bullpen for Washington if the lockout ends.
