Red Sox Acquire Jorge Alcala from Twins

The Boston Red Sox have acquired right-handed reliever Jorge Alcala from the Minnesota Twins for infield/outfield prospect Andy Lugo, both teams announced. Boston designated righty Brian Van Belle for assignment in a corresponding move. Alcala's time with the Twins ended in the wake of an abysmal start to his season. The 29-year-old has thrown 24 1/3 innings of 8.88 ERA ball with 10.36 K/9 and 5.55 BB/9 in 2025, and his two most recent appearances were particularly poor. He yielded a combined nine runs (eight earned) on eight hits in two innings during blowouts against the Athletics (June 5) and Texas Rangers (June 10). While this season has been a disaster for Alcala, he was a useful reliever for the Twins at times from 2019-24. He posted the best season of his career just last year, tossing 58 1/3 frames of 3.12 ERA ball with 8.95 K/9, 3.09 BB/9, and a personal-high 15 holds. The Red Sox are taking a low-risk gamble that he'll return to the form he showed then.

Jorge Alcala Shut Down From Throwing

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jorge Alcala (elbow) has been shut down from throwing in Boston because he felt something that didn't feel quite right in his arm. "We're going to let him reset to zero before we try to build him back up again," manager Rocco Baldelli said. Alcala made two relief appearances for the Twins this year before landing on the injured list with elbow inflammation. The 26-year-old right-hander tossed two scoreless innings with two walks and two strikeouts in his 2 1/3 frames of work. Since Alcala will have to build all the way back up, he's likely to be out for another couple of weeks, at least. He had a 3.92 ERA, a 0.97 WHIP, one save and 61 K's in 59 2/3 relief innings for the Twins in 2021.

Jorge Alcala Headed To Injured List With Triceps Tendonitis

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jorge Alcala (triceps) is headed to the 10-day injured list with right triceps tendinitis. Alcala picked up a hold in Sunday's game against the Astros, serving up a home run while striking out two in one inning of work. The 26-year-old has pitched to a 5.11 ERA in 44 innings, though he owns a strong 1.09 WHIP and 43:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio to go along with it. Alcala isn't a contributor in redraft formats but certainly could have a future in dynasty leagues, as he has the tools, particularly his strikeout ability, to be the closer of the future for Minnesota.

Jorge Alcala Takes Loss Thursday

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Jorge Alcala was charged with his second loss of the season in Thursday's defeat to the Cleveland Indians. Alcala entered the game in the top of the eighth inning but quickly got into trouble after two leadoff singles. He was pulled after intentionally walking Jose Ramirez to load the bases, then was charged with three runs when Taylor Rogers allowed a two-RBI single and an RBI groundout. The 25-year-old has been charged with an earned run in three of his last four appearances, raising his ERA to 4.40. With just three holds, no saves, and three blown saves, Alcala is safely off the fantasy radar right now.
