Jose Herrera Fantasy Stats

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Jose Herrera (wrist) exited Sunday's contest early due to right wrist soreness. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his status during the week in case he suffered a serious injury. The 28-year-old is currently competing for the No. 2 catcher role behind Gabriel Moreno. Last season, Herrera posted a .227/.290/.320 slash line across 42 contests. He went deep one time and added four doubles. He generated a weak .214 xBA with a .268 xSLG. However, he did show a strong eye at the plate as he posted an excellent 19.9 percent chase rate. If the switch-hitter were to miss any time, fantasy managers should expect Adrian Del Castillo, Rene Pinto, and Aramis Garcia to see an uptick in playing time during the remainder of camp.

Newly-signed catcher Tucker Barnhart will reportedly compete with 26-year-old Jose Herrera to serve as the backup catcher for the Arizona Diamondbacks, per MLB.com's Steve Gilbert. While Gabriel Moreno has the starting spot, it is not yet determined who will serve as the backup, and the team could even bring in another backstop to add into the mix. Neither player offers much offensive upside, but the 32-year-old Barnhart is known for his defensive prowess. Regardless, it sounds as though both players will have the opportunity to win the role.
