Jose Urquidy Set for Bullpen Role

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery in June 2024. The Tigers will use Urquidy as a reliever when and if he is activated for the 60-day IL. The 30-year-old has made four rehab starts but has not pitched more than two innings in any of those appearances. Currently, there is no room in the Tigers' rotation for him, and Urquidy does not have enough time to be stretched out as a starter. Urquidy is an option for the Tigers' rotation in 2026 and has pitched out of the bullpen from 2019 to 2023 for the Houston Astros during the regular seasons and playoffs.

Jose Urquidy Making Rehab Start on Thursday

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (elbow) is scheduled to take the mound for a rehab start with Single-A Lakeland on Thursday. Urquidy threw a scoreless inning during his first rehab outing on Sunday. He figures to see a slightly larger workload this time around. If everything goes well, Urquidy should continue to ramp up his activities. The right-hander is working his way back from Tommy John surgery from last year. The hope is that he can contribute to the Tigers rotation at some point before the end of the regular season. He's not someone worth stashing in fantasy leagues right now.

Jose Urquidy Throws Bullpen Session on Friday

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (elbow) completed a successful bullpen session on Friday. The right-hander continues to throw without any issues, but hasn't faced live hitters yet. Urquidy is working his way back from Tommy John surgery that he underwent in June of last year. There is still more work to do, but Urquidy could be an option for the Tigers by mid-August. There is unlikely going to be fantasy value here.

Jose Urquidy Throws Another Bullpen Session on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow), who continues to recover from Tommy John surgery that he had in June of 2024, threw another bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLive's Evan Woodbery. Urquidy tossed around 20 pitches in his previous bullpen on June 5 and is scheduled to ramp up his workload this week, according to manager A.J. Hinch. The 30-year-old veteran is on the 60-day injured list and will need a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment before the Tigers even think about having him return to the major leagues. Urquidy isn't expected to return until late in the 2025 season, if at all, which means fantasy managers in single-year leagues shouldn't count on relying on him. When he does return, there's a good chance he'll serve in a long-relief role out of Detroit's bullpen.

Jose Urquidy Throws Another Bullpen Session

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow), who is recovering from UCL reconstruction, completed another bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLive's Evan Woodbery. Urquidy also threw a bullpen last Thursday, but he still has a long ways to go in his rehab from a second Tommy John surgery and isn't expected to come back from the 60-day injured list until some point in the second half of the 2025 season. Urquidy could need a few more bullpen sessions before being cleared to eventually face live hitters, and he'll also require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment. The 30-year-old won't be a realistic fantasy option, even in deeper leagues, after the All-Star break and won't even be guaranteed a starting role when he does return. Urquidy has gone 27-16 in his five-year MLB career (all with the Astros) with a 3.98 ERA (4.51 FIP), 1.43 WHIP and 326:97 K:BB in 405 innings.

Jose Urquidy Throws Bullpen Session

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) threw a bullpen session on Tuesday, according to MLive's Evan Woodbery. Urquidy had been playing catch out to 120 feet in early April but has now progressed to throwing off a mound in his recovery from his second Tommy John surgery of his career last June. The 30-year-old Mexican hurler is making progress but still has a ways to go and is not expected to be ready for his 2025 debut until the second half of the season. And when Urquidy is eventually activated, there's a good chance he won't have a spot in the starting rotation waiting for him. He made 16 appearances (10 starts) for the Houston Astros in 2024 and posted a career-worst 5.29 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 45:25 K:BB in 63 innings. However, in his first four MLB seasons in Houston, he never had an ERA over 3.95.

Jose Urquidy Throwing Out To 120 Feet

Detroit Tigers right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) is playing catch out to 120 feet three times a week, according to MLive's Evan Woodbery. Urquidy is slowly making his way back from his second Tommy John surgery last June and isn't expected to be an option to make his Tigers debut until after the All-Star break in mid-July. As a result, he shouldn't be rostered in single-year fantasy leagues right now. If he doesn't suffer any setbacks in his throwing program, the 29-year-old could resume throwing off a mound by the end of April. Whenever Urquidy is eventually activated from the injured list in the second half of 2025, there's no guarantee he'll have a spot waiting for him in the starting rotation. The Mexican hurler has a career 3.98 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a below-average 19.6% strikeout rate and a 5.8% walk rate in 405 innings over 79 outings (70 starts), which have all come with the Astros.

Jose Urquidy Cleared To Play Catch From 105 Feet

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Jose Urquidy (elbow) has been cleared to play catch from 105 feet this week and will do so three times. Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reported the news. The 29-year-old is recovering from Tommy John surgery he underwent in June of last year. It's a step in the right direction for Urquidy, but he still has a long way to go before toeing the rubber again and is projected to return to the field sometime in the second half of the season. The last time we saw the veteran pitch was in late September of 2023, a season in which he sported a 5.29 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 63 innings of work. The former Houston Astro could be a boost to fantasy managers later this summer for those who choose to stash him. Still, there's no guarantee he will return to a starting role in 2025.

Tigers Sign Jose Urquidy To One-Year Deal

The Detroit Tigers signed free-agent right-hander Jose Urquidy (elbow) to a one-year, $1 million deal on Saturday that includes a $4 million club option for 2026, according to the Detroit Free Press' Evan Petzold. Urquidy underwent Tommy John surgery in June of last year. After signing him, the Tigers placed both Urquidy and right-hander Sawyer Gipson-Long (elbow, hip) on the 60-day injured list. The 29-year-old Urquidy won't be able to make his debut with Detroit until sometime in the second half of the season, but if the Tigers like what they see when he returns, they can pick up his option for next season. Depending on the state of Detroit's starting rotation, there's a good chance Urquidy returns in a relief role later this year. In his five years with the Houston Astros, Urquidy had a 3.98 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a below-average 19.6% strikeout rate and 5.8% walk rate in 405 innings pitched.

Cristian Javier, Jose Urquidy Expected To Be Ready Next July

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown said on Thursday that right-handers Cristian Javier (elbow) and Jose Urquidy (elbow) are both projected to return at the end of July in 2025, "hopefully earlier." Javier and Urquidy both had Tommy John surgery in June of this year, so they will most likely miss all of the first half of next season as they recover. Javier is the more attractive fantasy option, but neither pitcher is going to be able to make any kind of impact until after the All-Star break, and even then, they'll both be risky coming of TJ surgery. The 27-year-old Javier only made seven starts for Houston in 2024, going 3-1 with a 3.89 ERA and 1.41 WHIP with 27 K's and 19 walks in 34 2/3 innings. Urquidy was unable to pitch at all in the big leagues in 2024, and he only appeared in 16 (10 starts) games in 2023 due to injuries as well.
