He isn't really going to have any fantasy appeal as long as he's in a utility role in Arizona.

Newman missed over a month with an oblique injury and will now not be with the Reds as they look to somehow secure the final wild-card spot in the National League over the final week of the regular season. The 30-year-old veteran will likely make it to the free-agent market and be looking for a new team this offseason. In his first year in Cincinnati in 2023, he hit .253/.311/.364 with only three home runs, 16 doubles, 28 RBI, eight stolen bases and 28 runs scored in 253 plate appearances and 74 games.

However, Newman has long been a light-hitting infielder as he sports a career .261 average with 22 homers, 32 stolen bases, and a .662 OPS for his career across 469 big-league appearances. He will man third base in addition to his leadoff duties Wednesday night at Fenway Park in Boston.

The Reds traded right-handed pitcher Dauri Moreta to Pittsburgh for Newman, who hit .274 with a .316 on-base percentage in 309 plate appearances last season. The 28-year-old, who has significant experience playing both second base and shortstop, also chipped in with a pair of home runs and eight stolen bases in those 309 plate appearances. In addition to Newman, Cincinnati's other infield options on the 40-man roster include Jose Barrero, Joey Votto, Elly De La Cruz, Jonathan India, Alejo Lopez, Noelvi Marte, Matt Reynolds, and Spencer Steer.

Newman has only appeared in 24 games this season after missing time with an injury, and he has slashed .273/.319/.375 in 93 plate appearances with no homers and two steals. He's a solid contact hitter, but unfortunately that doesn't count for much in the world of fantasy baseball.

Newman felt something in his hamstring, and it's not related to his groin injury. The 28-year-old played in a minor league rehab game with Triple-A Indianapolis on Friday, where he likely tweaked his hamstring. Newman has been on the shelf since late April due to a strained left groin, and now he'll be out longer. He was hitting .250/.308/.375 with no home runs, eight RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base in 14 games before his injury, and Newman has very little fantasy appeal in much deeper leagues when he's healthy.
