Luke Weaver a Top Closer Handcuff to Stash

New York Mets right-hander Luke Weaver has arguably been his team's top reliever in 2026, recording a 1.98 ERA and 0.80 WHIP with 43 strikeouts, 14 holds, two wins, and one save across 41 innings (39 games). The 32-year-old owns a stellar 20.4% K-BB rate, and opposing batters are hitting just .152 against him. Weaver's path to saves with the Mets is currently blocked off by established closer Devin Williams. However, Williams has struggled to a 4.54 ERA this season and has allowed four earned runs across his first 5 1/3 innings pitched in July. The Mets may also be looking to move Williams at the upcoming trade deadline if they can find an interested buyer. If Williams is removed from New York's closer role for either reason, Weaver profiles as a logical choice to assume the job. He has experience in the ninth inning, recording eight saves as a member of the New York Yankees in 2025. Particularly in deeper leagues, Weaver could be worth stashing off the waiver wire.

Mets Put Luke Weaver, Others on the Trade Block

Chelsea Janes of SNY reports that the New York Mets are officially telling contending teams that everyone but young stars Carson Benge, AJ Ewing, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean, and Juan Soto is available, according to a rival executive. "That doesn't mean everyone will go. But it means the Mets will listen on just about everyone, which is in keeping with what people familiar with their thinking have signaled for weeks," Janes said. It's expected that the Mets will spread out their sell-off over several weeks, which is why they're getting started immediately following this week's All-Star break. Right-handed starters Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes (leg) are the most obvious trade candidates before the early August trade deadline, but other names like right-handed reliever Luke Weaver could also go in the midst of a lost season for the Mets. The 32-year-old Weaver could be a particularly attractive late-inning bullpen piece that won't come at an exorbitant cost. The 11-year veteran has been one of the team's best relievers, sporting a 1.85 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, one save, 43 strikeouts, and 11 walks in 39 innings out of the 'pen in 2026 in his first year in Queens.

Mets Not Considering Moving Luke Weaver into Closer Role

New York Mets interim manager Andy Green said that at this point in time, he's not considering replacing right-handed closer Devin Williams with right-hander Luke Weaver in the closer's role, according to Laura Albanese of Newsday Sports. Williams, who has a 4.83 ERA and 1.71 WHIP through the first half of his first season in New York, blew back-to-back save chances going into this week's All-Star break, allowing four earned runs in his last 3 1/3 innings pitched. The 31-year-old veteran also has 44 strikeouts and 19 walks while collecting 13 saves in 31 2/3 innings in the first half. Weaver, meanwhile, only has one save but has been much more reliable overall, posting a 2-1 record, 1.85 ERA, 0.82 WHIP, and 43:11 K:BB in 39 innings pitched in his first season with the Mets. Green might not be ready to pull Williams from the closer's role, but his tune could change early in the second half if Williams continues to struggle. Fantasy managers chasing saves should think about snagging Weaver off the waiver wire. He's currently rostered in 14% of Yahoo leagues.

Luke Weaver Seeing Fantasy Value Soar as Elite Closer Handcuff

New York Mets right-hander Luke Weaver is expected to see a significant rise in opportunities as the club searches for stability in late-game situations. Newly acquired closer Devin Williams has struggled to a 10.29 ERA, while key bullpen arm A.J. Minter is on the injured list. That opens the door for Weaver to handle more leverage work. He has been sharper lately, turning in three straight scoreless appearances after an uneven start. Acquired from the Yankees during the 2026 offseason, Weaver was not expected to compete for saves but has the experience to fill that role. He owns a 5.40 ERA in 10 games with two holds, and has emerged as a strong waiver wire handcuff target.

Mets Turn to Luke Weaver in Final Frame, Worth Targeting as Closer Handcuff?

New York Mets relief pitcher Luke Weaver got the call to close out his team's first win after losing 12 straight, and the 32-year-old righty earned the win by closing out the Twins. He came on to get the last out of the eighth inning, walking Ryan Jeffers but then retiring Luke Keashall with the bases loaded. The Mets scratched out a run in the eighth, and Weaver struck out the side in the ninth to preserve the win. He's 2-0 on the year now, despite allowing six runs in 10 innings across his 10 appearances. The Mets have continued to publicly stay committed to closer Devin Williams, but if they were to make a change, Weaver would be an obvious candidate to replace him. Weaver isn't a must-add in most formats yet, but if you need a Williams handcuff or are trying to get ahead of a potential move in deep leagues, he's worth watching as a late-inning option if Williams continues to struggle.

Mets Finalizing Two-Year Deal With Luke Weaver

The New York Mets are finalizing a two-year, $22 million deal on Wednesday with free-agent right-handed reliever Luke Weaver, a source told Anthony DiComo of MLB.com. The Mets lost All-Star closer Edwin Diaz in free agency to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but they have gained Weaver and right-hander Devin Williams, who both pitched across town with the New York Yankees in 2025. The 32-year-old Weaver will most likely open the 2026 campaign in Queens as the primary setup man in front of Williams, but he could factor into the ninth inning if Williams struggles like he did in pinstripes. Weaver wasn't at his best in the second half in the Bronx this past season and finished with a 3.62 ERA, 1.02 WHIP, a career-high eight saves, 21 holds, 72 strikeouts, and 20 walks in 64 2/3 innings in relief. With an elite strikeout rate and plenty of holds coming his way with the Mets, Weaver will continue to have plenty of appeal in fantasy as a high-leverage reliever.

Luke Weaver Physically Feels Good

New York Yankees relief pitcher Luke Weaver has struggled on the mound over the last few outings. The right-hander has given up two earned runs in each of his last three appearances. Weaver was hit around during their series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The problems continued on Friday when Weaver gave up a two-run home run to Jeff McNeil and suffered his second blown save of the season. Weaver says he's feeling good physically, but he seemingly can't do anything right on the mound. Devin Williams has settled back into the closer role, so Weaver is droppable in most fantasy formats.

Luke Weaver Takes Loss in Return from Injured List

New York Yankees reliever Luke Weaver (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season in a 5-3 decision against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Returning after missing three weeks with a hamstring injury, Weaver entered a 3-3 game in the top of the eighth inning. The right-hander gave up a leadoff home run to Orioles third baseman Ramon Urias and later yielded a walk and a single. The Yankees pulled Weaver after he threw 24 pitches and recorded two outs (one via strikeout), but lefty Tim Hill allowed one of the two inherited runners to score on a Gunnar Henderson single. It's not what the Yankees or fantasy managers wanted to see from Weaver after a lengthy absence. While Weaver still owns a shiny 1.71 ERA over 26 1/3 innings, he has now surrendered a homer in three of his four most recent appearances. The Yankees will continue turning to Weaver and Devin Williams in high-leverage situations, though it could be the latter who receives more save opportunities. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor how the Yankees use the two late in games.

Devin Williams and Luke Weaver Will Both Close Games

New York Yankees relief pitchers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver will both have the opportunity to close games. Manager Aaron Boone noted that the Yankees have "two elite guys back there." As a result, while both relievers could see double-digit save opportunities during the second half of the season, they will significantly limit each other's ceiling. Williams opened the season as the top closer but allowed 13 earned runs across his first 11 2/3 innings, which allowed Weaver to become the go-to option in the ninth. However, Weaver was eventually placed on the 15-day IL with a hamstring injury, which allowed Williams to see more opportunities. While Williams has begun to turn the corner, Weaver sits with a stellar 1.05 ERA through 25 2/3 innings of work. As a result, both relievers should be viewed as low-end options in standard category leagues when looking for saves, for the time being.

Luke Weaver Reinstated from 15-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees announced that they have reinstated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list. When Weaver landed on the IL with a strained left hamstring on June 3, expectations were that he would miss four to six weeks. However, the 31-year-old recovered quicker than expected and was able to forgo a minor league rehab assignment. He's now back about three weeks after suffering the injury, and he'll once again take on a high-leverage role in the Yankees' bullpen. Weaver has worked as a setup man and a closer this year, racking up six holds and eight saves with a sparkling 1.05 ERA in 25 2/3 innings. It's now unclear whether he or righty Devin Williams will close for New York. Weaver took the job from Williams before going on the IL, but the latter has recovered from a terrible start to the season to perform well in the role.
