Luke Weaver Physically Feels Good

New York Yankees relief pitcher Luke Weaver has struggled on the mound over the last few outings. The right-hander has given up two earned runs in each of his last three appearances. Weaver was hit around during their series against the Toronto Blue Jays. The problems continued on Friday when Weaver gave up a two-run home run to Jeff McNeil and suffered his second blown save of the season. Weaver says he's feeling good physically, but he seemingly can't do anything right on the mound. Devin Williams has settled back into the closer role, so Weaver is droppable in most fantasy formats.

Luke Weaver Takes Loss in Return from Injured List

New York Yankees reliever Luke Weaver (1-2) suffered his second loss of the season in a 5-3 decision against the Baltimore Orioles on Friday. Returning after missing three weeks with a hamstring injury, Weaver entered a 3-3 game in the top of the eighth inning. The right-hander gave up a leadoff home run to Orioles third baseman Ramon Urias and later yielded a walk and a single. The Yankees pulled Weaver after he threw 24 pitches and recorded two outs (one via strikeout), but lefty Tim Hill allowed one of the two inherited runners to score on a Gunnar Henderson single. It's not what the Yankees or fantasy managers wanted to see from Weaver after a lengthy absence. While Weaver still owns a shiny 1.71 ERA over 26 1/3 innings, he has now surrendered a homer in three of his four most recent appearances. The Yankees will continue turning to Weaver and Devin Williams in high-leverage situations, though it could be the latter who receives more save opportunities. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor how the Yankees use the two late in games.

Devin Williams and Luke Weaver Will Both Close Games

New York Yankees relief pitchers Devin Williams and Luke Weaver will both have the opportunity to close games. Manager Aaron Boone noted that the Yankees have "two elite guys back there." As a result, while both relievers could see double-digit save opportunities during the second half of the season, they will significantly limit each other's ceiling. Williams opened the season as the top closer but allowed 13 earned runs across his first 11 2/3 innings, which allowed Weaver to become the go-to option in the ninth. However, Weaver was eventually placed on the 15-day IL with a hamstring injury, which allowed Williams to see more opportunities. While Williams has begun to turn the corner, Weaver sits with a stellar 1.05 ERA through 25 2/3 innings of work. As a result, both relievers should be viewed as low-end options in standard category leagues when looking for saves, for the time being.

Luke Weaver Reinstated from 15-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees announced that they have reinstated right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list. When Weaver landed on the IL with a strained left hamstring on June 3, expectations were that he would miss four to six weeks. However, the 31-year-old recovered quicker than expected and was able to forgo a minor league rehab assignment. He's now back about three weeks after suffering the injury, and he'll once again take on a high-leverage role in the Yankees' bullpen. Weaver has worked as a setup man and a closer this year, racking up six holds and eight saves with a sparkling 1.05 ERA in 25 2/3 innings. It's now unclear whether he or righty Devin Williams will close for New York. Weaver took the job from Williams before going on the IL, but the latter has recovered from a terrible start to the season to perform well in the role.

Luke Weaver Could Come Off Injured List on Friday

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) could be activated from the 15-day injured list before Friday's series opener in the Bronx against the division-rival Baltimore Orioles, according to manager Aaron Boone. Weaver has recovered very quickly from a left-hamstring strain that he suffered less than three weeks ago and will skip a minor-league rehab assignment after looking and feeling great during a live batting practice session on Tuesday. Although the 31-year-old veteran was serving as New York's closer at the time of his injury, it's entirely possible that he'll return to a late-inning setup role ahead of right-hander Devin Williams, who has looked much better since Weaver went down with his hamstring injury. Still, Weaver has been lights-out in 2025 and should remain valuable in most fantasy formats.

Luke Weaver Could Skip Rehab Assignment

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) threw a live batting practice session at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday, and manager Aaron Boone said it's possible that Weaver could skip a minor-league rehab assignment. Weaver strained his left hamstring on June 3 and was given a timetable of four to six weeks, but he has made excellent progress and could rejoin the big-league squad this weekend. The 31-year-old threw upwards of 20 pitches on Tuesday over two innings and said he "felt great." He said he hasn't felt anything in his hamstring since a day or two after he hurt it while stretching. Weaver was the Yankees' closer at the time of his injury and had a 1.05 ERA and eight saves in 25 2/3 innings. However, Devin Williams has looked much better since Weaver's injury and hasn't blown a save since Weaver went on the IL.

Luke Weaver Throws Live Batting Practice Session

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) threw a live batting practice session for the first time on Tuesday since injuring his hamstring a few weeks ago, according to the New York Daily News' Gary Phillips. Weaver felt "great" and hasn't felt anything in his hamstring injury since a day or two after he hurt it. The 31-year-old veteran threw over 20 pitches over two innings on Tuesday. He was given a timetable of four to six weeks when he was put on the 15-day injured list, but it sounds like Weaver could return sooner than later. At the time of his injury, he was serving as the team's closer and had been outstanding with eight saves, a 1.05 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings pitched. However, Devin Williams has taken over as the closer with Weaver out and has looked much better after a rough start to his Yankees tenure.

Luke Weaver Feels "Great" After Bullpen Session

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) said he felt "great" after throwing his second bullpen session on Wednesday at Kauffman Stadium. Weaver landed on the 15-day injured list on June 3 with a strained hamstring and received a platelet-rich plasma injection, and now he's no longer feeling anything in his leg. The 31-year-old veteran was given a return timetable of four to six weeks, but he appears to be making good progress and could be back on the short end of that timeline, barring a setback when he resumes facing live hitters. Before his injury, Weaver took over primary closing duties from Devin Williams, who got off to a rough start in his first year in New York. Weaver has eight saves with a stingy 1.05 ERA, 0.70 WHIP and 24 strikeouts in 25 2/3 innings, although he could return to the eighth-inning setup role with Williams settling down of late.

Luke Weaver Receives PRP Injection, Resumes Throwing

New York Yankees reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) has received a PRP injection in his strained left hamstring. The 31-year-old is currently on the 15-day IL with the injury, but has also resumed his throwing program, so hopefully he's able to be on the short end of the original 4-6 week timeline that was provided. The righty had a phenomenal 2024 and has parlayed that success into 2025, posting a 1.05 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, and an 18.1 percent K-BB%, with eight saves through 25 2/3 IP (24 appearances). Devin Williams recorded the save for the Yankees on Friday, but did hit one batter in the appearance, and now has seven saves on the year. Weaver should continue to be stashed as he'll still hold value whether he's the official closer when he returns or not.

Luke Weaver Officially Lands on 15-Day Injured List

The New York Yankees officially announced on Tuesday that they placed right-handed reliever Luke Weaver (hamstring) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to June 1) with a left-hamstring strain and recalled right-hander Yerry De los Santos from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in a corresponding move. Weaver injured his hamstring warming up before Sunday's win over the Los Angeles Dodgers, and he's expected to be out for four to six weeks, meaning we may not see him until after the All-Star break in mid-July. In the meantime, right-hander Devin Williams will return to seeing most of the team's save chances after losing the closing gig early in the year to Weaver. Williams has an ERA over 6.00 for the season but also has five saves and has looked sharper in recent outings. The 30-year-old reliever needs to be rostered in all fantasy formats.
