Mick Abel Could be a Sneaky Pickup

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel is expected to make his season debut at some point during the upcoming series against the Kansas City Royals. Although fantasy managers might not want to wait until then to scoop up Abel. The young right-hander earned a spot in the starting rotation after an impressive performance during Spring Training. Abel posted a 2.00 ERA, 0.83 WHIP with 23 strikeouts in 18 innings of work. The former first-round pick was part of the trade that sent Jhoan Duran to the Philadelphia Phillies mid-season last year. Abel struggled in four outings with the Twins last season, but appears to have turned a corner. The 24-year-old could be a consistent big league starter as long as he can keep his walk rate in check. He's worth a look in mixed leagues and could quickly become a popular waiver wire pickup.

Mick Abel Has Late-Round Sleeper Potential Entering 2026

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel won a spot in his team's starting rotation to open 2026 with an impressive performance in Grapefruit League action. The 24-year-old recorded a 2.00 ERA and 0.83 WHIP with 23 strikeouts across 18 innings pitched. Abel was one of the key pieces the Twins received from the Philadelphia Phillies in last year's trade deadline deal for star reliever Jhoan Duran. However, Abel struggled in a small sample size in 2025, posting a 6.23 ERA and 1.51 WHIP with 39 strikeouts across 39 innings split between Philadelphia and Minnesota. Walks have been a persistent issue for Abel to this point in his career. He recorded a 10.1% walk rate across 98 1/3 minor-league innings in 2025 and never recorded a single-digit walk rate in any of his four minor league seasons. Still, Abel logged an impressive 28.6% strikeout rate in the minors in 2025. If he can keep his walk rate under control, Abel could be an undervalued source of strikeouts for fantasy managers in 2026.

Mick Abel to Make Twins Opening Day Roster

Minnesota Twins right-hander Mick Abel will make the team's Opening Day roster with right-hander Zebby Matthews being sent to Triple-A St. Paul, according to Betsy Helfand of the Pioneer Press. Abel has won a starting rotation spot to begin the 2026 regular season over Matthews after posting a 1.35 ERA with a 0.75 WHIP, 17 strikeouts, and only one walk in 13 1/3 Grapefruit League innings over his four starts this spring. The 24-year-old took a 10-inning scoreless streak into his last outing. The former 15th overall pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2020 made his big-league debut in 2025 and had a 6.23 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, and 39:16 K:BB in 39 innings over 10 outings (eight starts) with the Phillies and Twins. Abel has had concerning walk rates in the minors and in his first taste of the big leagues, so if he can clean that up like he has this spring, he will have a shot to stick at the back end of Minnesota's starting rotation. Abel's leash will be short in the big leagues, though, as he has minor-league options remaining.

Mick Abel Looks Impressive in Camp

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel has put together impressive numbers early in camp. Through four starts, Abel has a 1.35 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, and a 17/1 K/BB ratio. The 24-year-old is making a strong case to crack the 26-man roster to begin the season. Abel was part of the trade that sent closer Jhoan Duran to Philadelphia last July. He posted an ugly 6.23 ERA with eight home runs allowed across 39.0 innings of work with the Phillies and Twins last season. The Twins have already lost starter Pablo Lopez (elbow) for the entire 2026 season. They definitely need help in the rotation, and Abel could provide that if he keeps pitching like this. He's someone worth monitoring in deep league fantasy drafts.

Mick Abel Making his Case as Twins Starter in 2026

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Mick Abel turned in his second strong spring performance this past Sunday, allowing no earned runs on one hit and no walks while striking out six over three innings of work. Combined with his spring debut, the right-hander has yet to allow a run and just three hits while walking none so far and striking out a total of 11 through six innings pitched. The former-first round draft pick was consistently throwing his four-seamer over 97 mph in his latest outing, topping out at 98.9 mph and generating six whiffs (55 percent) on 11 swings on that pitch in the process. Abel had a rough go of it during his first taste of the majors last year, posting a gaudy 6.23 ERA and 1.51 WHIP in 10 appearances (eight starts) between Minnesota and Philadelphia, although his last start of the 2025 showed what he is capable of, when he struck out nine in six innings of shutout ball. The 24-year-old will likely begin the season with Triple-A, but if he continues to show well, he could be the first name called when the Twins need rotation help. Although he's not draftable in most leagues, Abel is a name to monitor as he's shown flashes of dominance in the minors with a 28.6 percent strikeout rate at Triple-A in 2025.

Can Mick Abel Take the Next Step in the Major Leagues?

Minnesota Twins right-handed pitcher Mick Abel has flashed immense upside in the minor leagues but has yet to show much consistency in the major leagues. Abel made his MLB debut with the Phillies in 2025 and logged 25 innings, posting a 5.04 ERA and 1.36 WHIP. He struck out 21 batters and allowed nine walks. He was then moved to Minnesota in the Jhoan Duran trade, but saw his struggles continue. With the Twins, Abel tossed 14 innings (four games) and posted an 8.36 ERA and a 1.79 WHIP. However, at Triple-A, Abel has been nothing short of dominant. Through 98 1/3 combined Triple-A frames last summer with Lehigh Valley and Salt Lake, the former 15th overall pick posted an elite 2.20 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, with a 114:40 K:BB. He is a name to monitor in spring training as he could carve out a spot at the back of the rotation.

Mick Abel Moving to Bullpen

Minnesota Twins right-handed pitcher Mick Abel is slated to pitch out of the bullpen for the remainder of the season. The Twins acquired Abel shortly before the trade deadline from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for relief pitcher Jhoan Duran. The 24-year-old spent time with Triple-A St. Paul following the trade. However, this past week, Abel made his Twins debut and struggled, allowing seven hits and six earned runs to the Chicago White Sox. This performance was surprising as Abel had posted an impressive 1.76 ERA with a 0.85 WHIP across 15 1/3 innings at St. Paul. Given his expected shift to the bullpen, right-hander Taj Bradley will likely remain in the rotation going forward. Given his limited expected role, fantasy managers in standard leagues should leave Abel on the waiver wire for the foreseeable future.

Twins Officially Call Up Mick Abel on Saturday

The Minnesota Twins announced on Saturday that they recalled right-handed pitching prospect Mick Abel from Triple-A St. Paul and designated right-hander Jose Urena for assignment in a corresponding move. Abel, the team's No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, was acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies at the trade deadline in the deal that sent closer Jhoan Duran to Philly. The 24-year-old began at St. Paul but will now have a shot to stick in Minnesota's big-league starting rotation the rest of the year. The former first-rounder was touched up a bit in his first six MLB starts earlier this year with the Phillies, allowing 14 earned runs on 25 hits (seven homers) while walking nine and striking out 21 in 25 innings. But with the Saints, Abel was sporting a 1.76 ERA, 0.85 WHIP and 23:6 K:BB in 15 1/3 frames. In a start on Saturday against the White Sox, Abel will be a viable fantasy streamer in his return to the bigs.

Mick Abel, Taj Bradley Could Join Twins This Weekend

Minnesota Twins pitchers Mick Abel and Taj Bradley could join the starting rotation as soon as this weekend in Chicago against the White Sox, according to Dan Hayes of The Athletic. The Twins oped to start Abel and Bradley at Triple-A St. Paul to allow them to acclimate to the organization after they were both acquired at the July 31 trade deadline. Abel has been working on his command and posted a 1.76 ERA with 23 strikeouts and six walks in 15 1/3 innings for the Saints, while Bradley has struggled while trying to rediscover his splitter, recording a 7.53 ERA in 14 1/3 innings at Triple-A while striking out 18 and walking two. The Twins' rotation should look quite different by year's end after injured starters Pablo Lopez, Simeon Woods Richardson and David Festa all return, but both Abel and Bradley should be part of the rotation as well. Fantasy managers looking for strikeout upside could do worse than Abel and Bradley.

Twins Acquire Mick Abel in Trade With Phillies

The Minnesota Twins acquired right-handed pitching prospect Mick Abel and catching prospect Eduardo Tait from the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday in exchange for closer Jhoan Duran, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY Sports. Abel, the Phillies' No. 6 prospect per MLB Pipeline, made his big-league debut this year in Philly and didn't fare so well, allowing 14 earned runs on 25 hits (seven homers) while walking nine and striking out 21 in 25 innings pitched over six starts. The 23-year-old former 15th overall pick in 2020 has looked much better at Triple-A Lehigh Valley in 2025 over 13 starts (74 innings), recording a 2.31 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 81:32 K:BB. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder now has a much clearer path to a rotation spot in the big leagues with Minnesota and could resurface in the big leagues for the Twins to close out the 2025 campaign. UPDATE: Abel will join Triple-A St. Paul.
