Robert Stephenson Done for the Season

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Robert Stephenson (elbow) was placed on the 15-day injured list on Saturday. Stephenson has already been sidelined with multiple injuries this season, but this one will end his 2025 campaign. He'll finish the season with a 2.70 ERA, 1.00 WHIP, and a 10/3 K/BB ratio across 12 appearances. The right-hander was brought in to be a high-leverage option, but sadly Stephenson wasn't able to stay healthy. In a corresponding move, Sam Bachman has been recalled to take over the spot in the bullpen.

Robert Stephenson Activated From 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Angels activated right-hander Robert Stephenson (biceps) from the 60-day injured list on Friday and optioned fellow righty Chase Silseth to Triple-A Salt Lake. Stephenson is back after missing two-plus months with a stretched nerve in his bicep, continuing an injury-marred Angels tenure for the 32-year-old. Stephenson joined the Angels on a three-year, $33 million contract heading into 2024, but he has barely pitched since then. He missed all of last year as a result of Tommy John surgery, and after working back to make his 2025 debut on May 28, he made just two appearances before the team placed him back on the IL. Having logged a mere one inning with the Halos, Stephenson will aim to stay healthy for the rest of the season and head into the winter on a positive note.

Robert Stephenson to Begin Rehab Assignment on Thursday

Los Angeles Angels right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (biceps) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday night, according to Angels PR. Stephenson is nearing a return to the big-league bullpen after being out since the end of May with right-biceps inflammation. The 32-year-old did not pitch at all in 2024 due to injury and only tossed one inning earlier this year before going on the injured list, so the Halos certainly won't be rushing the veteran reliever back. However, barring a setback with his biceps, Stephenson figures to bolster the Angels' bullpen before the end of August. Kenley Jansen is locked into the team's closer role, but Stephenson could be pitching in high-leverage, late-inning situations before the end of the season. In his last full season with the Rays and Pirates in 2023, he had a 3.10 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, one save and a 77:16 K:BB in 52 1/3 innings.

Robert Stephenson Throwing Bullpen Sessions

Los Angeles Angels right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (biceps) threw his third and most recent bullpen session on Aug. 5 as he works back from a stretched nerve in his bicep. Stephenson made just two appearances in late May before the injury forced him to the 10-day IL, and the Angels have since moved the 32-year-old to the 60-day IL. Stephenson is eligible to return whenever he's ready, which could be later this month. In 2023, his most recent full season, Stephenson put up a 3.10 ERA with a .88 WHIP and 77:16 K:BB in a combined 52 1/3 innings between Pittsburgh and Tampa Bay. The Angels then signed Stephenson to a three-year, $33 million contract in free agency, but they've gotten nothing from the investment so far. He missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery and has thrown only one inning this year.

Robert Stephenson Frustrated by Slow Progress

Los Angeles Angels reliever Robert Stephenson (bicep) has advanced to throwing from 105 feet and is anticipating that he will throw from up to 120 feet this weekend. While he is optimistic that he will pitch again this season, he is also becoming increasingly frustrated by his lack of progress and inability to stay healthy. Sidelined with Tommy John surgery in 2024, the 32-year-old reliever returned to appear in just two games earlier this season before succumbing to a stretched nerve in his bicep. Stephenson hopes to return in August instead of September, but he understands that's the nature of nerve ailments, since they depend on the person and their respective bodies. Stephenson broke out in 2023 with both the Pirates and the Rays, combining to finish with a 3.18 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP over 60 appearances. Since the veteran reliever has arrived in Los Angeles, he has struggled to maintain any semblance of health, but looks to finish the year off on the mound in preparation for the 2026 season.

Robert Stephenson Moved to 60-Day Injured List

The Los Angeles Angels announced that they have transferred right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (biceps) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL. The team selected left-hander Jose Quijada's contract in a corresponding move. Shifting Stephenson to the 60-day IL doesn't affect his timeline to return, as it has been almost two months since he went on the 15-day IL on June 2 with a stretched nerve in his right biceps. He's still eligible to come back in early August, but that's unlikely to happen. Stephenson missed all of last season because of Tommy John surgery and returned in late May to log two appearances before going back on the shelf. Those are the only appearances Stephenson has made since he signed a three-year, $33 million contract with the Angels before the 2024 campaign.

Robert Stephenson Throwing Up to 90 Feet

An MRI exam on Los Angeles Angels right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (biceps) on June 6 showed an injury after he was pulled three pitches into his May 30 outing. He threw on June 30 but still felt discomfort and was shut down until throwing again on July 7. Stephenson said he's been throwing up to 90 feet as he recover from a stretched nerve in his right biceps, according to MLB.com. The 32-year-old veteran has a ways to go considering he hasn't pitched since May, but he's at least back to building his arm back up and could be an option to rejoin the Angels' bullpen as a late-inning setup man at some point in August, barring another setback. The former first-rounder didn't pitch at all in the big leagues in 2024 and has only made two appearances for the Halos in his first year with the team this season.

Robert Stephenson to Throw on Monday

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Robert Stephenson (biceps) is expected to begin throwing again on Monday. Stephenson continues to work his way back from a right biceps injury that has sidelined him since early June. The right-hander still remains without a timetable, but is likely going to need a rehab assignment before returning to the Angels bullpen. The hope is that Stephenson can be back around the All-Star break. Stephenson doesn't offer enough upside in the bullpen to warrant rostering in fantasy formats right now.

Robert Stephenson Exits Early on Friday With Arm Injury

Los Angeles Angels relief pitcher Robert Stephenson (biceps) was removed early during Friday's outing against the Cleveland Guardians. Stephenson threw three pitches before exiting the contest. The right-hander just returned from Tommy John surgery, but appears to have avoided a major injury. Stephenson reportedly exited the contest due to biceps discomfort, so it's unrelated to his repaired elbow. It's unclear if Stephenson will land on the injured list, but he's not much of a fantasy option right now anyway. UPDATE: Manager Ron Washington thinks Stephenson will be fine, and they are considering him day-to-day for now. After being checked by a doctor, Stephenson is encouraged the injury is in the middle of his bicep and not by his elbow. He's planning to try and throw on Saturday.

Robert Stephenson Hits 60-Day Injured List

According to Jeff Fletcher of the SoCal News Group, Los Angeles Angels right-handed pitcher Robert Stephenson (elbow) has been placed on the 60-day injured list. The 31-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery last May and is not expected to return to the mound until sometime in July. Stephenson was unable to pitch at all during the 2024 campaign. In 2023, Stephenson held a strong 3.10 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP across 52 1/3 innings. He tallied 77 punchouts and allowed walks at an 8.0 percent rate. That season, he generated a strong 2.73 xERA and a .180 xBA. By putting him on the 60-day injured list, the Angels were able to open a roster spot for relief pitcher Kenley Jansen, who the team officially signed earlier on Saturday. When Stephenson does return, fantasy managers should expect him to have a high-leverage role in the bullpen.
