Tomás Nido News
Chicago Cubs catcher Tomas Nido (knee) started his baseball progression on Thursday. Nido is working his way back after having a knee debridement in late July and is still hoping to make it back before the end of the 2024 regular season. When he is fully healthy and activated from the 10-day injured list, he's expected to serve as the backup to Miguel Amaya. Christian Bethancourt is currently Chicago's No. 2 backstop. The 30-year-old Nido, who hails out of Puerto Rico, began the year with the New York Mets before joining the Cubs. In 49 total games at the big-league level between both teams, he's slashed just .192/.219/.315 with four home runs, 12 RBI and 14 runs scored in 140 trips to the plate. He can remain on the waiver wire in all fantasy leagues.

Tomas Nido Seeing The Majority Of Starts Behind The Dish
New York Mets catcher Tomas Nido has been receiving the slight edge in starts behind the dish due to Francisco Alvarez's thumb injury. Omar Narvaez was expected to see the majority of opportunities, but that has yet to look to be the case. Nido has started every game from May 3 to May 10, and Nido may be running away with the starting role. One significant reason why is that Nido is a much better defender and is 3-15 when throwing out opposing runners, while Narvaez is 0-30. In the batter's box, Nido has a .211/.231/.316 with one long ball compared to Narvaez, who has a .186/.222/.233. Manager Carlos Mendoza clearly values Nido's defense skill, and NL-only fantasy managers should monitor this situation as Nido could be worth adding if he becomes the primary backstop.

Tomas Nido Making First Start Of 2024
New York Mets catcher Tomas Nido is slated to make his first start of the 2024 season as the New York Mets look to complete a three-game sweep against the Los Angeles Dodgers and continue their six-game win streak. Nido was promoted from Triple-A Syracuse yesterday when Francisco Alvarez (thumb) was placed on the injured list. Nido struggled at the plate last season as he hit for a .125/.153/.125 stat line across 61 plate appearances. The 30-year-old should be expected to serve as the backup catcher in Queens behind Omar Narvaez for the foreseeable future. Nido will have trouble finding a path to fantasy relevance in a limited role and due to his past struggles in the batter's box. He is best left as a desperation option in DFS but has a difficult matchup today as he will face Tyler Glasnow.

Tomas Nido Expected To Be Designated For Assignment
The New York Mets are expected to designate catcher Tomas Nido for assignment, according to a source. The team will go with a catching tandem of prospect Francisco Alvarez and Omar Narvaez (calf) moving forward. Nido is strong defensively behind the plate, but he doesn't hit much and has gone just 7-for-56 (.125) in 22 games this year for the Mets with one, RBI, two walks and 18 strikeouts in 61 trips to the plate. If the 29-year-old clears waivers, there's a chance he could remain with the organization in the minor leagues. The 29-year-old backstop has a .213/.249/.308 career slash line with a .557 OPS and 13 home runs in 274 major-league games.

Tomas Nido Reinstated From Injured List, Gary Sanchez DFA'd
The New York Mets reinstated catcher Tomas Nido (eye) from the 10-day injured list on Thursday and designated catcher Gary Sanchez for assignment in a corresponding move. Nido missed some time with vision issues, but apparently he's fixed them and is ready face big-league pitching again. Omar Narvaez (calf) is nearing a return from his injured-list stint as well, so for now, Nido will split playing time behind the plate in Queens with youngster Francisco Alvarez. The 29-year-old Nido offers very little fantasy-wise in the deepest of leagues with a .213 career average and only 13 home runs in seven big-league seasons. Sanchez is likely to join Triple-A Syracuse after going 1-for-6 with an RBI and three strikeouts in three games played for the Mets.

Tomas Nido Placed On The Injured List Wednesday
The New York Mets placed catcher Tomas Nido (eyes) on the 10-day injured list with a vision issue, according to MLB.com. The 29-year-old was in the middle of a horrible start to the season offensively, slashing .118/.148/.118 in a backup role. In a corresponding move, the club recalled Michael Perez from Triple-A. The former fifth-rounder has played parts of five seasons at the big league level but hasn't hit much, batting .174 with a .545 OPS in his career. Perez will backup Francisco Alvarez, who was already the starting catcher in New York, so this news doesn't change much for any fantasy manager.

Tomas Nido Agrees To Two-Year Deal With Mets
The New York Mets and catcher Tomas Nido agreed to a two-year, $3.7 million deal on Wednesday, according to sources familiar with the deal. The contract covers Nido's remaining arbitration-eligible years and will pay him $1.6 million in 2023 and $2.1 million in 2024. The 28-year-old backstop hit .239/.276/.324 with a .600 OPS, three home runs, 28 RBI and 31 runs scored in 313 plate appearances and a career-high 98 games for the New York Mets in a backup role in 2022. Nido will be the team's No. 3 catcher this year behind Omar Narvaez and prospect Francisco Alvarez, so he will carry virtually zero fantasy appeal unless there is an injury ahead of him.

Tomas Nido's MRI Comes Back Clean
New York Mets catcher Tomas Nido (forearm) underwent an MRI on his left forearm on Sunday. According to Nido, the MRI showed "nothing newsworthy." Mets manager Buck Showalter stated that Nido wasn't available for Sunday's game against the Chicago Cubs unless an emergency came up, but it did not. With fellow catcher James McCann (oblique) on the injured list, Nido's health is particularly worth watching. The team has top catching prospect Francisco Alvarez waiting in the wings at Triple-A. It seems as if Nido will avoid the injured list this time around, meaning the team will continue forward with Nido and Patrick Mazeika until McCann is back.

Tomas Nido Lands On Injured List With Sprained Thumb
The New York Mets placed catcher Tomas Nido (thumb) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. His 2021 season is now over. The team called up fellow catcher Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A to fill his roster spot. Mazeika will serve as a backup to starting catcher James McCann the rest of the way. Nido is dealing with a sprained left thumb. This is his third trip to the injured list due to the same injury. The 27-year-old appeared in a career-high 58 games this year and slashed .222/.261/.327 with three home runs, 13 RBI and 16 runs.

Jeurys Familia, Tomas Nido Begin Rehab Assignments
New York Mets relief pitcher Jeurys Familia (hip) and catcher Tomas Nido (wrist) will start their rehab assignments with Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday night. Familia is eligible to come off the injured list as soon as Thursday, and Nido is eligible to return on Friday. Familia suffered a right hip impingement at the beginning of last week, but he should be back later this week, barring a setback. The right-handed reliever has a 3.63 ERA and one save on the season, but his 6.0 BB/9 is concerning for anyone that might've been using him in deeper saves/holds leagues. Familia should return to a setup role for New York ahead of closer Edwin Diaz. Nido suffered a right wrist contusion when he was hit by a pitch last Monday. He'll return to a backup role behind James McCann, leaving him little to no fantasy appeal.
