Is Trevor Story Worth Stashing Through an Extended Injury Absence?

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (hernia) is expected to miss six to 10 weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a hernia on May 22. The 33-year-old was off to a rough start to the 2026 season before hitting the injured list, hitting .206/.244/.303 with three home runs, 19 RBI, 16 runs scored, and four stolen bases across 176 plate appearances. However, Story is just one season removed from hitting 25 homers and stealing 31 bags across 157 games in 2025. His barrel rate dropped from 9.8% in 2025 to 3.8% in 2026, which could be directly linked to the hernia issue. If health was the reason for his struggles in 2026, Story could be poised for a second-half surge upon his return to the Red Sox lineup. In leagues with deeper roster formats, fantasy managers may want to consider stashing Story through his injury for his high-end power/speed upside.

Trevor Story has Hernia Surgery, Expected to Miss 6-10 Weeks

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (hernia) underwent surgery to fix a sports hernia, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Story said last week that surgery would require six to 10 weeks to recover. The Red Sox placed the veteran shortstop on the 10-day injured list last weekend. Boston has been mixing and matching at the 6 with Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Andruw Monasterio with Story out, and that should now continue for the foreseeable future. The 33-year-old two-time All-Star is no stranger to long-term injuries, although he did manage to play in a career-high 157 games for the BoSox last year, slashing .263/.308/.433 with a .741 OPS, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, 31 stolen bases, and 91 runs scored in 654 plate appearances. It's looking like another lost season in 2026, however, and he was hitting just .206 (34-for-165) with three homers, 19 RBI, four steals, and 16 runs scored in 41 games before getting injured. With the news of his hernia surgery, it's hard to recommend holding Story in shallow-mixed fantasy leagues. He's currently rostered in just over half of Yahoo leagues.

Trevor Story Could Require Hernia Surgery

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (groin) is "seeking additional opinions about whether he needs surgery to fix his sports hernia," according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. If it's confirmed that he'll require hernia surgery, he'd likely miss six to 10 weeks. That's a crushing blow for the veteran infielder, who was placed on the injured list Saturday. He has now dealt with five major injured list stints since the Red Sox signed him back in 2022. Story was off to a pretty poor start at the plate this season, slashing just .206/.244/.303 with 47 wRC+ and a whopping 32.4% strikeout rate. Very few managers were relying on him in fantasy baseball, so his absence won't have enormous lineup impacts. In the meantime, we expect to see a mix of Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Andruw Monasterio at shortstop. Marcelo Mayer and Nick Sogard could also compete to play more games at short.

Trevor Story Hits the Injured List With Groin Injury

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story (groin) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a groin injury. The 33-year-old has been battling this ailment for most of the season and will now require time off to let it heal properly. Story has failed to live up to last year's success, hitting just three home runs and stealing four bases over 176 plate appearances. The struggles have also spilled over into the field, as he has already committed six errors. In his absence, the Red Sox will likely use a committee approach, with Nick Sogard, Andruw Monasterio, and Isiah Kiner-Falefa getting a chance to take over. The team has also indicated that they would like to keep Marcelo Mayer at second base, even with Story sidelined. It is unclear at this time if he will need more than the ten-day minimum before returning.

Trevor Story Carries Red Sox With Five RBI on Wednesday

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story did a lot of damage at the plate in Wednesday's 9-5 win over the hosting Minnesota Twins at Target Field in the series finale. Story finished the day 2-for-4 at the plate with five RBI, a three-run home run, and a walk. In addition to his three-run blast, Story had a two-run double to drive in five total runs on the day. Despite only hitting .208 on the year with a .560 OPS after Wednesday's performance, Story already has two home runs and 17 RBI in his first 18 games played. The 33-year-old two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner might finally be starting to break out of his early-season funk at the plate. Sticking in the middle of Boston's batting order will help Story deliver plenty of run production for his fantasy managers if he can stay healthy. Last year was the first time that Story played in over 100 games with the team in his fourth year in Beantown.

Red Sox to Give Trevor Story More Rest This Year?

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevory Story was held out of a third straight Grapefruit League game over the weekend, with the Red Sox "monitoring Story's workload" in an effort to keep him fresh going into the start of the 2026 regular season next week, a club source told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Story has played in 11 Grapefruit League games this year and has hit a strong .424 (14-for-33) with no homers, four doubles, three triples, two RBI, six runs scored, and a stolen base in 34 plate appearances. The 33-year-old two-time All-Star and two-time Silver Slugger winner had two injury-plagued seasons for Boston in 2023 and 2024 before rebounding to hit .263/.308/.433 with a .741 OPS, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, a career-high 31 stolen bases, and 91 runs scored in 157 regular-season games in 2025. Boston is planning to give Story a "little more rest in 2026," which has started this spring. Story showed he can still deliver power/speed numbers for fantasy managers last year, but his lengthy injury history and advanced age make him a pretty big injury risk and more of a low-end starting shortstop option in fantasy leagues.

Trevor Story a Strong Candidate to Hit Second in 2026

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story is a strong candidate to hit second in the batting order this year, following outfielder Roman Anthony in the leadoff spot, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. Story was in the two-hole in his final 10 games of the 2025 regular season and also hit there in all three of the team's Wild-Card games in the playoffs against the New York Yankees. The veteran shortstop hit .294 with a .339 on-base percentage, .497 slugging percentage, and .836 OPS in his final 84 games last year, but overall, he had a .308 on-base percentage (tied for 11th), and his .433 slugging percentage ranked 72nd among qualified hitters. The 33-year-old two-time All-Star stayed healthy and hit 25 homers, drove in 96, scored 91 runs, and stole 31 bases in 157 regular-season games. Story is still a top-15 fantasy shortstop when healthy, but his lengthy injury history suggests volume could be an issue in 2026.

Trevor Story Expected to Bat Second?

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story could bat second after manager Alex Cora said that he "earned the right" to hit at the top of the order, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Story's 2025 season was refreshing, as he improved his production at the plate while staying healthy for 157 games. He ultimately slashed .263/.308/.433 with 25 home runs, 31 stolen bases, a 5.0% walk rate, a 26.9% strikeout rate, and 101 wRC+. Last year represented his best power surge since 2019, but his walk rate dropped to a new career-low, and he continued to struggle with strikeouts. That's not great for a prospective No. 2 hitter, but Cora seems committed to putting the veteran infielder near the top of the lineup. Cotillo speculates that Roman Anthony could lead off, followed by Story in the No. 2 hole.

Can Trevor Story Remain a Consistent Fantasy Option?

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story appeared in 157 games in 2025, which matched a previous career high he set in 2018. Since joining the Red Sox in 2022, Story never appeared in more than 94 games in a season and has only surpassed the 50-game mark once, until 2025. Last season, Story looked like his former self, posting a .263/.308/.433 line with 25 home runs and 31 stolen bases. He tallied 91 runs and 96 RBI as he held a consistent spot in the heart of the Boston lineup. However, under the hood, Story generated a modest .311 xwOBA, suggesting he may take a bit of a step back in 2026. Additionally, his 26.9% K% and low 5.0% BB% significantly lower his floor in points formats. Given his injury history, Story does hold some risks heading into the 2026 campaign. However, when on the field, he possesses legit power and speed upside while providing high-end counting stats. He is a solid option at his 104.9 (No. 13 SS) on NFBC drafts when looking for upside, albeit with some risk.

Trevor Story Opts in for Remaining Two Years on his Contract

Boston Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story has opted into the remaining two years and $50 million left on his deal with the team, a source told Chris Cotillo of Mass Live on Tuesday. Story will make $25 million in each of the next two seasons and has a $25 million club option for 2028 that includes a $5 million buyout. The 32-year-old two-time All-Star had his best year in Boston in his fourth year with the team in 2025, slashing .263/.308/.433 with a .741 OPS, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, 91 runs scored, and a career-high 31 stolen bases in 157 games played and 654 plate appearances. It was the first time in his four years in Beantown that he managed to stay healthy, which resulted in his best season since his final year in Colorado in 2021. He might have had the opportunity to make more on the open market, but he chose security with the BoSox. Expecting another strong season like the one he just had is probably foolish, given his age and lengthy injury history.
