Drew Allar Working as QB4 in First OTA Session

Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Drew Allar (ankle) worked as the fourth QB on Monday in the team's first OTA session, behind Aaron Rodgers, Will Howard, and Mason Rudolph, according to ESPN's Brooke Pryor. Allar, who was the team's third-round pick in April's NFL draft, had surgery last November following a broken left ankle that ended his final season at Penn State in 2025. The 22-year-old has apparently fully recovered from his ankle injury. With Rodgers officially back in the Steel City for one more go-around in his 22nd NFL campaign, the 6-foot-5, 228-pound Allar will open his first year in the NFL buried on Pittsburgh's QB depth chart. New head coach Mike McCarthy is trying to build Allar's mechanics from the ground up after he played in a Nittany Lions system that wasn't tailored at all towards the next level. It's going to take some time for Allar in Pittsburgh, so anyone looking to draft him in dynasty/keeper leagues needs to be willing to play the long game.

Drew Allar Could Continue to Hold Dynasty Value

Steelers quarterback Drew Allar may no longer have a realistic shot of winning the starting job in Pittsburgh after the team reached a one-year agreement with Aaron Rodgers on Saturday night, but Allar could be viewed as a long-term dynasty winner. Allar entered college as a five-star recruit with all the physical tools to play the position, but poor decision-making and a lack of development across his 35 starts at Penn State caused him to fall to the third round in the 2026 NFL Draft. With the 42-year-old Rodgers back in the fold, Allar will have the opportunity to study behind one of the best to ever play the position, and by 2027, Mason Rudolph will be a free agent while 2025 sixth-round pick Will Howard will have only two years remaining on his rookie contract. The 2027 draft class is loaded with quarterback talent, but if the reunion of Rodgers and head coach Mike McCarthy goes well, Pittsburgh could again find itself out of position to add a difference maker through the draft. While Allar's true dynasty success remains a long shot, the perception of learning behind Rodgers beats that of losing an open competition to Rudolph or Howard, or even taking the field before he is ready. At RotoBaller's dynasty QB33, he should hold value throughout the year and, at the very least, could become an interesting sell candidate once he and Howard are all that remain at the top of Pittsburgh's depth chart.

Steelers "Uninstalling" Everything Drew Allar Learned in College

ESPN's Brooke Pryor reports that the Pittsburgh Steelers are essentially "uninstalling" everything that rookie quarterback Drew Allar learned at Penn State and "re-uploading" their own methods, fundamentals, and mechanics. Head coach Mike McCarthy and his coaching staff are taking it slowly with Allar so far and concentrating on his footwork and widening his base, which McCarthy hopes will help the young signal-caller process things faster and move through his reads. The 6-foot-5 Allar has the raw traits that McCarthy looks for in a QB to run his West Coast style of offense, and he has the pedigree to be a top-tier signal-caller after throwing for 61 touchdown passes and 7,402 yards as a three-year starter at Penn State. But Allar's mechanics need work, and he struggled against top-tier opponents in college in a system that didn't always put him in a great spot to succeed. Like most young QBs, Allar is getting used to the new challenge of playing under center at the NFL level. If veteran Aaron Rodgers eventually re-signs with Pittsburgh, Allar is expected to be the QB3, at best, going into the start of his rookie season in 2026. RotoBaller currently has him ranked as the No. 33 dynasty QB, so patience will be required.

Drew Allar Wasn't Always Set Up to Succeed in College

Former Penn State quarterback Drew Allar likely would have been among the top QBs drafted in 2025 if he had skipped his senior season, according to Adam Rittenberg of ESPN. However, Allar chose to return to Penn State and had a slower-than-expected start before breaking his ankle in the middle of the season. The Pittsburgh Steelers took the 6-foot-5, 228-pounder with the No. 76 overall pick in this year's NFL draft. Big Ten coaches were lukewarm on Allar, but they noted that he "went through multiple systems and wasn't always set up to succeed." "Hopefully [Pittsburgh] will be a coaching staff that can maximize what he's good at," a Big Ten coach said. "I'm not really sure that was the case [at Penn State]." Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy will look to maximize Allar's skill set, but most likely after veteran Aaron Rodgers plays one more season in the Steel City. Allar threw for 49 touchdowns in his sophomore and junior seasons with the Nittany Lions before recording 1,100 yards, eight touchdowns, and three interceptions in six games in his senior campaign before getting hurt. Fantasy managers in dynasty formats will need to be patient with the 22-year-old, but the long-term ceiling is high.

Drew Allar Selected 76th Overall by Steelers

The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a move at the quarterback position, selecting Penn State signal-caller Drew Allar with the 76th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. Allar played just six games for the Nittany Lions in 2025 due to a fractured ankle, which ended his season in mid-October. Across 45 career collegiate contests, Allar completed 63.2% of his pass attempts and threw 61 touchdowns with just 13 interceptions. He also showed some ability to make plays with his legs during his junior season in 2024, rushing for 302 yards and six touchdowns on 96 attempts. The Steelers quarterback room is currently unsettled as the team waits for Aaron Rodgers to decide whether he will play in 2026. If Rodgers returns, Allar will likely play a reserve role as a rookie. Should Rodgers decide to retire, Allar could be competing with veteran quarterback Mason Rudolph for the starting role in Pittsburgh.

NFL Scouts See Plenty of Upside With Drew Allar

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar struggled with accuracy and played in only six games in 2025 due to a fractured left ankle, but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler writes that some NFL scouts still "see major upside" in Allar. He previously garnered first-round buzz thanks to his 6-foot-5 frame and big arm, but it's tough to project where he'll go in the 2026 NFL draft because of his abbreviated final season with the Nittany Lions. "He's my favorite quarterback in the draft outside of Mendoza," an NFL coordinator said. "In the right system, he can be great. He's got everything as far as tools. His footwork is an absolute mess. But improve his footwork, and he can take off. He deserved better than what he got at Penn State." If Allar lands in the right spot with a coordinator that can improve his footwork, Allar could be a nice dynasty/keeper target if you miss out on Fernando Mendoza or Ty Simpson.
