Marcus Mariota News
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) is unlikely to be with the organization next season. The 29-year-old left the team after getting benched and underwent surgery on his knee. The Falcons would save $12 million by cutting Mariota before June 1st. That being said, it seems increasingly likely the Falcons will move on from Mariota. The rebuilding Falcons will likely find another veteran to stick behind youngster Desmond Ridder. As for Mariota, he should be able to catch on as a backup elsewhere, but it's hard to believe he'll find a starting job to begin the 2023 season.
Atlanta Falcons head coach Arthur Smith said that quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) will have knee surgery and will land on Injured Reserve, ending his 2022 season. Rookie quarterback Desmond Ridder would have started the rest of the season, regardless. "I'm not a medical expert, I'm just telling you that it had nothing to do with the decision," Smith said. The Falcons want an opportunity to evaluate Ridder in the final four games of the regular season, beginning in Week 15 against the New Orleans Saints on the road in a hostile environment. Like Mariota, Ridder has dual-threat abilities at the QB position, and although he looked good in the preseason, he's bound to struggle at times in his first four NFL games to close out the season. A timetable for Mariota's return will be determined after he undergoes knee surgery.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota could be heading to Injured Reserve as he's dealing with a knee injury. Mariota is not at the Falcons' facility on Monday and head coach Arthur Smith said he anticipates he'll go on Injured Reserve, but he is getting his knee looked at. During the bye week, rookie Desmond Ridder was announced as the Falcons' starting quarterback for the game against the New Orleans Saints. Logan Woodside was signed to the Falcons' active roster off of the Tennessee Titans' practice squad, presumably to be the Falcons' QB2.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota will be going into his eighth season this year. The last two seasons he spent playing backup to Derek Carr in Las Vegas. This season he will spend in Atlanta as presumably the starting quarterback, at least for the first game. And this is the first reason that Mariota's ceiling is low, he will be looking over his shoulder at his replacement Desmond Ridder. The Falcons drafted Ridder with the 74th pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. Ridder has a high ceiling,...
