Marcus Mariota News
The Atlanta Falcons agreed to an undisclosed two-year deal with free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota on Monday. Atlanta moved quickly to secure their next QB after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday. Mariota, who spent the last two seasons backup up Derek Carr for the Las Vegas Raiders, will reunite with head coach Arthur Smith in Atlanta. The 28-year-old figures to be a short-term stopgap under center until the Falcons find their next franchise quarterback. Mariota has completed 62.8% of his 1,795 career attempts over seven NFL seasons, and he doesn't have many weapons to work with outside of tight end Kyle Pitts and running back/wide receiver Cordarrelle Patterson. He can make plays with his legs, but Mariota shouldn't be much more than a low-end QB2 as a starter once again.
The Atlanta Falcons are expected to pursue free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota after trading Matt Ryan to the Indianapolis Colts on Monday, according to sources. Head coach Arthur Smith coached Mariota when the two were with the Tennessee Titans. Mariota spent the last two seasons with the Las Vegas Raiders, backing up Derek Carr. The 28-year-old hasn't started an NFL game since his final season in Tennessee, when he threw for 1,203 yards, seven touchdowns and two interceptions in seven games (six starts) in 2019. With not many receiving options currently, the Falcons are in full rebuild mode, and Mariota would essentially be a placeholder until the team can land their next franchise signal-caller.
Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Marcus Mariota could be a possible option for the Pittsburgh Steelers, according to Mark Kaboly. Mariota is a impending free agent and could draw some interest this offseason. Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin mentioned they'd like to bring in a mobile quarterback to replace Ben Roethlisberger. In theory, Mariota would make sense as a bridge quarterback for one season, so the Steelers can bring in a rookie. Mariota is a former No. 2 overall pick, but has struggled to find consistency at the professional level. Possibly, Mariota is ready for another chance as a starting quarterback.
