Marcus Mariota News
The Philadelphia Eagles have signed free-agent quarterback Marcus Mariota. The two sides agree to a one-year, $5 million contract for the upcoming season. It's worth noting that Mariota can earn up to $8 million with incentives. The former first rounder will replace Gardner Minshew as the backup to Jalen Hurts. Last season, Mariota threw for 2,219 yards with 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 13 games with the Atlanta Falcons. This move gives the Eagles one of the better backups in the league and added insurance in case Hurts does suffer an injury at some point. Mariota is not expected to have fantasy value unless Hurts goes down.
The Atlanta Falcons released quarterback Marcus Mariota on Tuesday, according to the team. The Falcons signed Mariota to a two-year deal last offseason, but the team will save roughly $12 million in salary cap space in 2023 by releasing him. It comes with a $2.5 million dead-money hit. The 29-year-old began the 2022 campaign as the starting QB for the team, but he ended up being benched for Desmond Ridder and finished the season on Injured Reserve due to a knee injury that required surgery. In his 13 starts for the Falcons, Mariota completed just 61.3 percent of his 300 attempts for 2,219 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions. He'll have to prove that he's past his knee injury in free agency, but he figures to draw interest on the open market as a backup in his next stop.
Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota (knee) is unlikely to be with the organization next season. The 29-year-old left the team after getting benched and underwent surgery on his knee. The Falcons would save $12 million by cutting Mariota before June 1st. That being said, it seems increasingly likely the Falcons will move on from Mariota. The rebuilding Falcons will likely find another veteran to stick behind youngster Desmond Ridder. As for Mariota, he should be able to catch on as a backup elsewhere, but it's hard to believe he'll find a starting job to begin the 2023 season.
