Ty Simpson a Great Fit With the Rams?

The Los Angeles Rams surprised everyone in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft when they selected former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. SEC coaches acknowledged that Simpson's profile "has some clear concerns," but another SEC coach said that "it's a great fit for him from a system standpoint." "There's a lot of similarities [with Michael Stafford]. [The pick] was the biggest [surprise], a guy who didn't have a ton of starts, but when he played, he played well. His long game is going to be really good." Simpson only had one season of starting experience at Alabama in 2025, so he's clearly not ready for a starting role at the next level. The good news is that in L.A., behind Stafford, Simpson won't be pressured to start right away, and he could end up sitting and learning for two years until Stafford decides to retire. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues will be playing the long game if they select Simpson, who is in excellent hands with head coach Sean McVay.

Ty Simpson Met With Sean McVay Before the Draft

Former Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson said on ESPN Radio that he had secret meetings with Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay before the Rams took Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft. It was a bit of a surprise that the win-now Rams took Simpson with their first-round pick, a year after Matthew Stafford won the MVP. McVay said that he and general manager Les Snead were in lockstep and in agreement to take Simpson as the QB of the future in L.A., while also making sure to notify Stafford beforehand that they would select Simpson in the draft. McVay made it clear that this is still Stafford's team as they seek another Super Bowl championship in 2026 and beyond. Without much of a collegiate resume (Simpson started just one year at Alabama), the 23-year-old is expected to compete with Stetson Bennett for the backup role this year. The Rams think Stafford is capable of playing beyond 2026, too, so fantasy managers in dynasty leagues must be prepared to play the long game with him as he develops behind Stafford.

Sean McVay Fully "On Board" With First-Round Selection of Ty Simpson

The Los Angeles Rams had one of the surprise picks on Thursday night in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft, taking Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson 13th overall. The Rams were clearly looking for the heir apparent to MVP Matthew Stafford, but many draft analysts didn't expect L.A. to go with Simpson with their first-round selection. Although head coach Sean McVay said he was "absolutely" on board with the pick, multiple team sources said they thought McVay "might have felt the need to downplay the pick to accentuate his confidence in Stafford." McVay and general manager Les Snead were in "lockstep" the entire way. When all is said and done, it was a surprising move by a Rams team that had been making all of its offseason moves with a win-now mentality to try to take advantage of what little time Stafford might have left in the league. The Simpson pick was clearly made with an eye toward the future, and he's expected to compete for the backup job with Stetson Bennett this summer. It's unclear now if the Rams are interested in re-signing veteran Jimmy Garoppolo, who has been considering retirement.

Ty Simpson to Compete for Backup Gig in Rookie Season

The Los Angeles Rams had one of the biggest surprise selections in the first round of the 2026 NFL draft on Thursday night when they took Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick. While Simpson figures to be the successor to MVP Matthew Stafford, many draft analysts were wondering if Simpson would fall out of the first round of the draft entirely. After the pick was made, head coach Sean McVay said, "This is Matthew's team." The 38-year-old is entering his 18th season, but he was at the top of his game last year, and it's unclear how long he wants to continue playing. McVay made sure to run the selection of Simpson by Stafford first. L.A. became the first team to have a QB named MVP and then select a signal-caller in the first round since the Packers in 1967. With Jimmy Garoppolo considering retirement, McVay said that Simpson will compete for the backup gig with Stetson Bennett. Simpson doesn't have a long resume from college, but he's a hard worker and is in an excellent situation with the Rams to eventually replace Stafford. Fantasy managers in dynasty/keeper leagues will need to be patient with Simpson.

Rams Select Ty Simpson With 13th Overall Pick

The Los Angeles Rams have selected Alabama quarterback prospect Ty Simpson with the 13th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. There had been plenty of chatter about Simpson's stock ahead of the draft, and in the end, he'll end up with the Rams as the eventual successor to Matthew Stafford. It's a stunning development, as the Rams have Stafford under contract for 2026 and have reportedly been open to an extension with him. Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports that the Rams plan to let Stafford dictate his future, and Simpson will be the successor whenever Stafford decides to retire. We can't fault the Rams for wanting to have a clear succession plan in place, similar to how the Packers drafted Jordan Love in the waning years of the Aaron Rodgers era. Plus, having a quarterback on an affordable rookie contract could allow the Rams to hand out a big extension to Puka Nacua or Davante Adams, both of whom are in a contract year. Simpson completed 305 passes for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions during his final season at Alabama. He's a pocket passer who fits nicely in the Rams' system. He'll have to wait a little while before he gets playing time. However, when his time comes, he'll have top-12 quarterback upside in fantasy football.

Cardinals Linked to Ty Simpson, Willing to Trade Up for him?

The Arizona Cardinals are linked to Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson "more than any other team," according to Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports. Jones adds that the "noise across the league is impossible to ignore." He has the Cardinals mocked to trade up four spots with the Miami Dolphins to No. 30 overall in the first round on Thursday night in the 2026 NFL draft to take Simpson. The 6-foot-1, 211-pound quarterback only started in his final season at Alabama, which has many draft analysts questioning how quickly he can develop into a starting-caliber QB in the NFL. If he were to land in Arizona, Simpson would likely compete with Gardner Minshew for the No. 2 job in the desert behind veteran Jacoby Brissett in 2026. Simpson was considered a lock to be a first-rounder back in March, but his stock has fallen somewhat, and he could slip into the early portion of Day 2 this Friday. In dynasty/keeper leagues, any fantasy managers who select Simpson need to be prepared to be patient.

Ty Simpson Could Fall Out of the First Round

ESPN's Seth Walder thinks Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson may fall out of the first round of the 2026 NFL draft, which starts this Thursday night. The Draft Day Predictor says Simpson has a 43% chance to be available at pick No. 33 to start Day 2 on Friday. The most likely spots for Simpson to go in the first round are at Nos. 16 (New York Jets), 21 (Pittsburgh Steelers), and 24 (Cleveland Browns). If Simpson doesn't get taken in the first round, the Jets (No. 33) and Arizona Cardinals (No. 34) are possibilities at the start of the second round. The draft predictor thinks there's a 91% chance that Simpson is off the board before pick No. 50. Many draft analysts were pretty confident last month that Simpson would be a first-rounder, but the buzz on Simpson being the second QB off the board in this year's class has faded since then. Wherever Simpson lands, he projects to be a developmental QB prospect that will sit and learn behind a veteran in his first season in the NFL.

Ty Simpson Visiting With Cardinals on Wednesday

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson is on a top-30 pre-draft visit with the Arizona Cardinals on Wednesday, according to Field Yates of ESPN. It's the final day that draft prospects are allowed to make visits with NFL teams. Arizona released Kyler Murray this offseason and signed Gardner Minshew. Veteran Jacoby Brissett is still on the team, too, and he's fully expected to open the 2026 campaign this fall after putting up career-best numbers in the desert when he took over for the injured Murray in Week 7 of last year. The Cardinals have the third overall pick in this year's NFL draft, although that wouldn't be where they'd target Simpson. The No. 34 overall selection at the top of the second round might be right in the wheelhouse for Simpson, who is viewed as more of a project at the QB position at the next level after starting just one season at Alabama. If Simpson were drafted by the Cardinals, he'd most likely enter his rookie season as the QB3 behind both Brissett and Minshew.

Ty Simpson to Fall into Second Round in NFL Draft?

ESPN's Adam Schefter recently said that he expects Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson to be a first-rounder in the 2026 NFL draft, but ESPN's Jeremy Fowler says that enough scouts have a second-round grade on him to make him an early Day 2 possibility. Simpson's draft stock is all over the map, as he's expected to go anywhere from No. 10 overall to No. 30 in the first round. The primary concern is his lack of experience, as he didn't become a starter at Alabama until his senior season in 2025. He played well early on last year but struggled late, ultimately finishing with 3,567 passing yards, 28 touchdowns, and only five interceptions in 15 games played. Nobody is really expecting Simpson to come in right away in the NFL and be great, and one veteran NFL scout called Simpson "a mix between Jared Goff and Mac Jones." Simpson made "a lot of NFL throws" at Alabama, which will help his development at the next level, but fantasy managers in redraft leagues shouldn't expect him to be in play as a starter in 2026, even in superflex leagues.

Ty Simpson has Visits With Cardinals, Dolphins, Browns

Alabama quarterback Ty Simpson, who is one of the top players at his position going into the 2026 NFL draft, has scheduled top-30 visits with the Arizona Cardinals, Miami Dolphins, and Cleveland Browns, according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Simpson already had a private workout with the New York Jets. ESPN's Adam Schefter said recently that it is likely to be a first-round pick at the end of April as the consensus No. 2 QB prospect this year, behind only Indiana's Fernando Mendoza, who should go first overall to the Las Vegas Raiders. In his first full year as the starter for Alabama in 2025, Simpson threw for 3,567 yards, 28 touchdowns, and five interceptions in 15 games. The Dolphins just signed Malik Willis to a big contract in free agency, so the Jets, Browns, and Cardinals all make a little more sense as possible landing spots for Simpson. From a dynasty/keeper perspective in fantasy, landing in Arizona might be the best possible outcome for Simpson's long-term value.
