Brandon Woodruff News
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff allowed one earned run on three hits and one walk while striking out six across six innings Tuesday against the Cubs. He did not factor into the decision. Woodruff faced the Cubs for the second straight start and combined to allow only one earned run across 13 innings with 14 strikeouts and one walk. After a shaky start on Opening Day, Woodruff has produced as expected but will face a challenge in his next start, which is slated to come Monday at San Diego. With Woodruff's outing, the ERA of Brewers starters is 1.94, best in the Majors by a relatively wide margin. He's a fantasy ace, continue to roll out with confidence.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff was excellent in Wednesday's win over the Cubs. Woodruff pitched seven scoreless innings, allowing one hit while striking out eight batters compared to no walks. The ace had a no-hitter until the bottom of the seventh inning when Ian Happ laced a single into right field. Woodruff was tagged with a no-decision due to a blown save by Devin Williams, though it shouldn't overshadow how excellent he was. The 28-year-old right-hander owns an impressive 2.45 ERA with a 13-2 strikeout-to-walk ratio through 11 innings this season. He'll look to get better run support in a rematch with the Cubs in his next start.
Milwaukee Brewers starting pitcher Brandon Woodruff gave up three runs Thursday in a no-decision against the Twins. Woodruff allowed six hits and two walks while fanning five across four innings. Woodruff got the nod for opening day for the second straight season but wasn't very effective in this contest lasting only four innings. He did well to minimize the damage, and the 28-year-old should find more success going forward. He posted a career-best 3.05 ERA in 2020 across 13 starts and hopes to continue that success over a full season in 2021. He's a flamethrower and fantasy owners need not worry about him going forward.

Brandon Woodruff didn't post a winning record for the Brewers in 2020 (3-5), but he did everything else fantasy managers look for. His 3.05 ERA and 3.29 xFIP over 73 2/3 IP were great for fantasy managers looking for ratio help. He also posted a K% above 30 for the first time in his career at 31.1, and his spin rate appears to be the reason why. Woodruff averaged 2,257 RPM on his four-seamer in 2019, leading to good but not great numbers (11.9 SwStr%, 60.3 Zone%). He upped his spin rate to 2,457 RPM last season, transforming it into one of the best heaters in the game (17.5 SwStr%, 62.7 Zone%). Furthermore, Woodruff held opponents to a .269 BABIP thanks to an IFFB% spike (5% in '19, 17.2% last season) that also seems connected to his spin rate. His fastball's IFFB% didn't change that much year-over-year (28.1% vs. 32%), but its FB% skyrocketed (31.7% to 46.3%). He also mixed in more sinkers, potentially helping his fastball play up. Woodrow's secondaries include a slider (17.6 SwStr%, 38.9 Zone%, 33.8% chase rate) and a changeup (15 SwStr%, 39.9 Zone%, 35.9% chase), both of which are more good than great. Therefore, Woodrow will need to retain his improved spin rate to earn his current ADP of 38.61.
