Orioles Sign Chadwick Tromp To Minor-League Deal

The Baltimore Orioles have signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor-league contract. Tromp was designated for assignment by the Atlanta Braves last week and elected free agency. The Braves removed him from the roster in the same transaction that activated Sean Murphy off the injured list. Tromp has been in the Atlanta organization for the past four seasons, after starting his career in San Francisco. Across 61 career MLB contests, the 30-year-old posted a .224/.235/.385 slash line with 10 doubles and five long balls. In 335 career games at the Triple-A level, the backstop has held a .253/.327/.419 slash line. Fantasy managers should expect Tromp to start his career in Baltimore with Triple-A Norfolk. He will only see time in the majors if Adley Rutschman or Gary Sanchez were to miss time.

Chadwick Tromp Designated For Assignment

The Atlanta Braves have designated catcher Chadwick Tromp for assignment to open a roster spot for Sean Murphy (rib), who was activated off the 10-day injured list on Sunday. Tromp was able to make the Opening Day roster with Murphy beginning the season on the injured list. However, he was deployed as the clear No. 2 backstop behind Drake Baldwin. During his brief taste in the majors this season, he only saw five at-bats and did not tally a hit. If he clears waivers, he will then move to Triple-A Gwinnett. Across 61 career games in the majors, Tromp has posted a .224/.235/.385 slash line with 10 doubles and five home runs. Fantasy managers in deeper two-catcher formats should continue to hold Baldwin on their roster as he still could have fantasy value operating as the No. 2 option behind Murphy.

Chadwick Tromp Expected To Be Backup Catcher

Atlanta Braves catcher Chadwick Tromp is expected to open the 2025 season as Sean Murphy's backup now that Travis d'Arnaud is with the Angels, which likely means he'll receive a start or two per week. Tromp had a similar role last year when Murphy missed two months with an injury, and again when d'Arnaud missed a little bit of time. He's merely serviceable offensively and is more known for his game-calling skills and solid defense behind the dish. The 29-year-old Aruban catcher has played in just 26 games in the last three seasons in Atlanta and has hit .250 (18-for-72) with no homers, 10 RBI, four runs scored and 24 strikeouts in 74 plate appearances. Tromp could open the year as the Opening Day backup catcher for Atlanta, but top prospect Drake Baldwin could make his MLB debut sooner than later and push Tromp out of the picture.

Chadwick Tromp Returns To Braves

The Atlanta Braves re-signed catcher Chadwick Tromp to a minor-league deal on Wednesday. Tromp will return to the organization for the 2024 season after he was non-tendered by the club last week. He has played in just seven games for Atlanta at the major-league level the last two seasons and has gone 5-for-20 with three doubles, four RBI and a run scored. The 28-year-old backstop will be back to provide depth at the catcher position behind Sean Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud. In 65 games at Triple-A Gwinnett in 2023, Tromp slashed .210/.336/.384 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI. He's a career .246 hitter with 51 homers in 521 minor-league games over 10 seasons.

Braves Option Chadwick Tromp To Triple-A

The Atlanta Braves optioned catcher Chadwick Tromp to Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday and reassigned right-handers Blake Burkhalter, Roel Ramirez and Brooks Wilson to minor-league camp. The Braves now have 61 total players in camp. It's not a surprise that Tromp was sent to Triple-A to begin the 2023 season with Sean Murphy and Travis d'Arnaud on the big-league roster at the position. However, if Murphy or d'Arnaud get hurt along the way, Tromp figures to be the first catcher called up to the majors by the Braves. The 27-year-old backstop has played in 34 major-league games in the last three years with the Giants and Braves, although he's played in just 10 games in the last two years (one with Atlanta in 2022).

Chadwick Tromp Finding Success In Triple-A

Atlanta Braves minor league catcher Chadwick Tromp is making his presence felt at the Triple-A level so far this season. The 27-year-old is seeing the ball well and hitting with power in the Atlanta pipeline. He now owns a 10-game hitting streak. During the month of May alone, he is 10-for-21 with four homers, 13 RBI, two walks, and just two strikeouts. Although he has been on a tear and could reach the majors soon, any promotion would merely put him in a backup role. Thus, he's not on the fantasy radar at this point in his career.

Chadwick Tromp Hits Solo Home Run Wednesday

San Francisco Giants catcher Chadwick Tromp had a nice day at the plate in Wednesday's 4-3 extra-innings loss to the Rangers, going 2-for-4 with a single, a solo home run, and a strikeout. Tromp followed up teammate Jason Vosler's fifth-inning solo shot with one of his own to put the Giants up 2-0. The 26-year-old has played in just two games this season, so he will need to see more consistent playing time before fantasy managers can begin to consider him.

Chadwick Tromp Placed On Injured List

San Francisco Giants catcher Chadwick Tromp (shoulder) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Tuesday afternoon. The 25-year-old missed Monday's game for undisclosed reasons, but it appears he suffered a strained right shoulder on Sunday. In his absence, Joey Bart will continue to see the majority of playing time behind the plate. Bart only has fantasy value in NL-only leagues or two-catcher formats.

Joey Bart Joins Starting Nine Monday

San Francisco Giants catcher Joey Bart will enter the starting lineup for Mondays contest against Colorado after Chadwick Tromp was scratched for an undisclosed reason. Bart, the clubs top prospect, has scuffled mightily in his first big league exposure, having struck out in 34.9% of his plate appearances. With just a .606 OPS across his first 25 games, much of the season-long intrigue that Bart held upon his callup has taken a step backward. Tromp has similarly had a difficult time getting on-base (.219), with any kind of injury likely ending his season with so few games remaining.

Giants Call Up Catcher Chadwick Tromp

The San Francisco Giants have called up catcher Chadwick Tromp. They have DFA'd Rob Brantly in a corresponding move. The 25-year-old Tromp has an intriguing profile. He's never played in the majors before. Last year, which he primarily spent at Triple-A, he slashed .280/.397/.568 with nine home runs and 37 RBI in just 42 games. With Buster Posey opting out for the 2020 season, the team has relied on Tyler Heineman behind the plate. A 29-year-old with just five major league games under his belt before this season, Heineman has been surprisingly effective so far, going 4-for-9 with two walks, two runs and a stolen base. Expect Tromp and Heineman to have something like a 50/50 time-share at the start, but if Tromp can get hot, he could be an intriguing player to watch in deep leagues.
