Dakota Hudson Clears Waivers, Outrighted To Triple-A
Colorado Rockies right-hander Dakota Hudson cleared waivers on Thursday and has been outrighted to Triple-A Albuquerque. The move comes after the Rockies designated Hudson for assignment over the weekend. It's not all that surprising that no teams were interested in picking him up off of waivers after he went 2-12 this year with a 5.84 ERA (5.34 FIP) and 1.64 WHIP with 48 strikeouts and a league-leading 46 walks in 86 1/3 innings over his 17 starts in his first year in Colorado. The 29-year-old former 34th overall pick by the St. Louis Cardinals in 2016 out of Mississippi State will now head to Albuquerque and try to figure things out before potentially rejoining Colorado's starting rotation at some point in the second half. Fantasy managers in deep leagues should have moved on a long time ago.
Dakota Hudson Designated For Assignment, Tanner Gordon Promoted
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Dakota Hudson has been designated for assignment on Sunday, July 7, according to Rockies Club Information. In a corresponding move, the Rockies promoted right-handed pitcher Tanner Gordon from Triple-A. Hudson posted a poor 5.84 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, and a 46:48 BB:K ratio across 86 innings this season. In his previous four outings, he allowed a total of 19 earned runs and 31 hits in just 18 innings. Gordon has pitched at the Triple-A level for the past two summers and has held a 5.92 ERA, 1.49 WHIP, and a 28:82 in 94 innings of play. The 26-year-old will likely take the final spot in the Colorado rotation for the time being and could have streaming appeal in favorable matchups in NL-only leagues.
Colorado Rockies starting pitcher Dakota Hudson threw seven innings of one-run ball in Friday's 4-1 win over the Dodgers. Hudson allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out three on his way to earning his second win of the season. The 29-year-old has shown improvement lately despite the 2-7 record, having allowed three runs or less in five of his last six outings. The ground-ball pitcher (54.7%) isn't going to record a lot of strikeouts (12.1% K%), but perhaps the recent run of success will start translating to more wins. Still, with a 4.86 FIP, he may be hard to trust for fantasy. The former first-round draft pick will get Cincinnati at home in his next start on Wednesday.
Dakota Hudson Looking To Get Back In The Win Column Saturday
Colorado Rockies right-hander Dakota Hudson will look to get back into the win column on Saturday when he takes on the visiting Philadelphia Phillies. It hasn't been a great season overall for the former Cardinals rotation member as he sports a 5.89 ERA through nine starts and 44 1/3 innings of work on the 2024 campaign. The good news is Hudson has induced ground balls at a massive 58% clip, although he has long been a ground-ball pitcher with a 55.3% ground-ball rate for his career. He will take on a Phillies team that is tied for fourth with a .332 wOBA on the season.
Colorado Rockies pitcher Dakota Hudson is competing for a spot in the starting rotation at the MLB level, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. He worked around two walks and one hit to toss a shutout inning on Thursday. Cut loose by the St. Louis Cardinals this past offseason, Hudson posted a 5.06 FIP, 4.98 K/9, 3.76 BB/9, and 51.5 GB% last year. The former first-round pick hasn't quite lived up to his potential, but he's still in the mix for an Opening Day roster spot. He has logged at least two MLB outings in each of the last six seasons and should extend that streak to seven in 2024.
The Colorado Rockies are expected to sign free-agent catcher Jacob Stallings and right-hander Dakota Hudson to undisclosed one-year deals on Friday, according to a source. Both Stallings and Hudson were non-tendered by the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals, respectively. Stallings should serve as the backup to Elias Diaz in 2024 after hitting .210/.287/.290 with seven home runs and 54 RBI in 202 games for the Fish the last two seasons. Hudson had a 4.64 ERA (4.60 FIP) and 1.47 WHIP with a weak 13 percent strikeout rate in his last two seasons with the Cardinals over 221 innings and 45 outings (38 starts). The 29-year-old has a good shot to open the 2024 season in Colorado's starting rotation, but Coors Field isn't usually a place where pitchers go to turn things around.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson will get the ball for his fourth start of the season Tuesday night against the visiting Oakland A's. It's the 28-year-old's 10th appearance overall this season as he has spent much of the campaign at Triple-A. It's been tough sledding for the right-hander who posted a 6.00 ERA across 11 minor-league starts but he's also worked to a reasonable 4.31 ERA in the big leagues across 31 1/3 innings this season. Hudson's career started quite promising as he posted a 2.63 ERA across 26 relief outings as a 23-year-old rookie in 2018 before turning in a 3.35 ERA across 174 2/3 innings as a full-time starter the following season. He has a nice opportunity to lower his ERA Tuesday against an A's offense that sits in a three-way tie for last place with a .292 wOBA versus right-handed pitching this season.
St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Dakota Hudson will start Wednesday's game against the Miami Marlins Wednesday, per St. Louis Dispatch's Derrick Goold. Sandy Alcantara will be the opposing pitcher. Hudson started the season with Triple-A Memphis and compiled a poor 6.00 ERA in 11 starts. However, he has turned in a 1.80 ERA over 10 innings of relief since joining the Cardinals in the beginning of July. While he offers little strikeout upside, Hudson has been a useful streamer at times throughout his career. However, given his opponent, his Minor League numbers this season, and the fact that he has not started for the Cardinals this season, fantasy managers should avoid him in this matchup.
Matthew Liberatore, Dakota Hudson Optioned Tuesday
The St. Louis Cardinals optioned left-hander Matthew Liberatore and right-hander Dakota Hudson to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday. The Cardinals will roll with Adam Wainwright, Miles Mikolas, Jordan Montgomery, Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz in their five-man starting rotation to begin the 2023 regular season, so Liberatore and Hudson will begin in the minors. Liberatore is the team's No. 6 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, but the 23-year-old southpaw will need to show better life on his fastball if he's going to have continued success once he gets another shot in St. Louis' rotation. Hudson, 28, will work on building up his velocity at Memphis before the Cardinals consider him a rotation option at the big-league level.
The St. Louis Cardinals and starting pitcher Dakota Hudson avoided salary arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.65 million deal on Friday. It wasn't a great year for Hudson in 2022. In his return from Tommy John surgery, he recorded a career-high 4.45 ERA (4.34 FIP), 1.45 WHIP and career-low 13.1 percent strikeout rate in 139 2/3 innings over 27 appearances (26 starts). Heading into his sixth season with the Cardinals, Hudson is in line to open the 2023 campaign in the bullpen, limiting his fantasy appeal in deeper formats. He should eventually see some time in the rotation, but he's gone over 139 innings just one in his career and will have limited fantasy upside.
