Gleyber Torres Starting a Rehab Assignment on Friday

Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres (oblique) will head to Triple-A Toledo on Friday for a minor-league rehab assignment, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive Media Group. Torres might be a day or two before he plays in his first game. The Tigers won't rush Torres once he starts playing in games down on the farm since he has been sidelined for almost four weeks due to a strained left oblique muscle. But barring a setback, Torres could be back with the big-league squad by the end of next week. The 29-year-old veteran Venezuelan second baseman will return to starting duties at the keystone in Motown when he's reinstated from the 10-day injured list. The three-time All-Star shouldn't be expected to return to the 20-homer mark, and he also has very minimal speed, but he has great plate discipline and should continue to be an asset in leagues that count on-base percentage. Torres was slashing .259/.389/.328 with two home runs, 11 RBI, 18 runs, 25 walks, and 22 K's in 32 games across 144 plate appearances for Detroit at the time of his injury.

Gleyber Torres Feels Good After Swinging on Tuesday

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) swung the bat on Tuesday in the cage and felt good, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. The Tigers will have Torres repeat that on Wednesday. Getting his swing back to 100% is the final hurdle to clear before he can go out on a minor-league rehab assignment. The 29-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list back on May 6 with a left-oblique injury, and he's been slow to recover. However, once he starts a rehab assignment, Torres could be back with the big-league club shortly after that, potentially in early June. The Venezuelan infielder is the Tigers' starting second baseman when healthy, but until he can return from the IL, Hao-Yu Lee and Zach McKinstry will continue to see most of the at-bats at the keystone in Detroit. Torres was an All-Star for the third time in his career in 2025 in his first year in Motown. He has very modest power and speed, but he's useful as middle-infield depth for his plate discipline and ability to get on base in fantasy.

Gleyber Torres Still Unable to Swing at Full Speed

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) continues to do pre-game fielding drills, but manager A.J. Hinch said that swinging is the hurdle right now, according to Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. Torres is unable to swing at full speed yet, and playing at 75 or 80 percent is not feasible and could aggravate his left-oblique injury. It's why the team's starting second baseman hasn't been able to start a minor-league rehab assignment this week. The 29-year-old Venezuelan infielder could still be back in the Tigers' starting lineup before the end of the month if he can resume swinging a bat at full speed sooner rather than later. In the meantime, Zach McKinstry and Hao-Yu Lee will continue to form a platoon at the keystone in Motown. Torres is currently rostered in just over half of Yahoo leagues, but he's worth an injury stash if you need a boost at second base in leagues that count on-base percentage. The three-time All-Star is slashing .259/.389/.328 with only two home runs, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored through his first 32 games in 2026 in his second year with the Tigers.

Is Gleyber Torres Worth Stashing Off the Waiver Wire?

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) is currently on the 10-day injured list with an oblique strain and remains without a set date for when he will begin a rehab assignment. While the 29-year-old's lack of a firm return timeline is a concern, Torres has been on the injured list since May 4 and should not be too far away from getting back to the big leagues. Before getting injured, the 29-year-old hit .259/.389/.329 with two home runs, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored across 144 plate appearances. While Torres is no longer the same power threat he was earlier in his career, he's logged more walks (110) than strikeouts (123) since signing with the Tigers. Torres' ability to consistently get on base should keep his spot at the top of the Detroit lineup secure and allow him to rack up counting stats once healthy. In deeper leagues, fantasy managers may want to consider stashing Torres off the waiver wire ahead of his return.

Gleyber Torres Not Ready to Start Rehab Assignment Yet

There was optimism earlier this week that Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) would start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday, but the team has pumped the brakes on that, and manager A.J. Hinch said he's still "day-to-day," according to Chris McCosky of The Detroit News. "We don't have a definitive plan," Hinch said. Torres has been performing light baseball activities as he recovers from a left-oblique strain, but he's just not ready yet to play in games. The 29-year-old Venezuelan infielder will return to starting duties at the keystone in Detroit when he's ready, but it's unclear exactly when that will be. Barring a setback, Torres should be back before June. In 116 at-bats in 2026, he's hitting .259/.389/.328 with a .716 OPS, two homers, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored. Torres won't give fantasy managers much power, but he's a great source of on-base percentage. Until he's ready to come off the IL, expect Zach McKinstry and Hao-Yu Lee to continue splitting time at second base.

Gleyber Torres "Trending Toward a Rehab Assignment"

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) is "trending toward a rehab assignment," manager A.J. Hinch told Evan Woodbery of MLive.com. Torres' rehab assignment is likely to be brief, too, so he could be back for fantasy managers as early as next week. The 29-year-old Venezuelan infielder will return to everyday duties at the keystone in Motown when he finishes a brief rehab assignment. Before his oblique injury, he was slashing .259/.289/.328 with a .716 OPS, two home runs, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored in 116 at-bats. Torres is eligible to come off the 10-day injured list on Friday, but he's not quite ready. Once he's back, Hao-Yu Lee will return to a utility role for the Tigers. Torres is rostered in only 54% of Yahoo leagues and isn't a big-time fantasy asset because of his minimal power and speed contributions. He's more attractive in leagues that count on-base percentage.

Tigers Put Gleyber Torres on Injured List With Oblique Strain

The Detroit Tigers placed second baseman Gleyber Torres (oblique) on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday with a mild left-oblique strain, according to Jason Beck of MLB.com. In a corresponding move, the Tigers recalled infielder Jace Jung from Triple-A Toledo. Infielder Zach McKinstry is making the start at the keystone for Detroit and will bat seventh in the lineup for Wednesday's game against the visiting Boston Red Sox and right-hander Sonny Gray, who is making his first start off the IL. Torres missed the last three games with what the Tigers were calling left-side tightness, and now he'll miss a little bit more time with an oblique strain. He will be eligible to return from the IL on May 14. Until Torres can return, both McKinstry and Hao-Yu Lee will be the primary options to replace him at second base. The 29-year-old is currently rostered in 62% of Yahoo leagues and won't be a must-hold while he recovers in shallow mixed leagues. Torres has hit a mediocre .259 (30-for-116) so far in 2026 with two homers, 11 RBI, and 18 runs scored.

Gleyber Torres Remains Sidelined on Monday

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (side) is not in the starting lineup for Monday's game against the Boston Red Sox. Rookie second baseman Hao-Yu Lee will start in his absence, batting seventh. Torres has been sidelined ever since exiting early on Saturday, when he was diagnosed with left side tightness. His power has taken a step back this year, but he's still slashing .259/.389/.328 with two homers, two doubles, and 11 RBI. He also owns a 17.4% walk rate. Because of his ability to get on base, managers will hope that Torres' absence doesn't last long. The good news is that the Tigers haven't placed him on the injured list, so he shouldn't miss too much additional time. UPDATE: Torres is available off the bench on Monday, so he should be able to avoid a stint on the IL.

Gleyber Torres Exits Due to Left Side Tightness

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (side) exited after the third inning of Saturday's game against the Texas Rangers. He was diagnosed with left side tightness, and he will undergo further evaluation. Torres' final at-bat came in the second inning, but he played the entire third inning on defense before being lifted for Hao-Yu Lee. At the time of his departure, the veteran infielder had gone 2-for-2 with a pair of singles and an RBI. In total this season, he's slashing .259/.389/.328 with two homers, two doubles, and 11 RBI. The power isn't very prominent, but he's been an on-base machine with more walks (17.4% walk rate) than strikeouts (15.3% strikeout rate). Torres currently ranks #19 among second basemen in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings for 2026.

Gleyber Torres Clear to Return on Monday

Detroit Tigers second baseman Gleyber Torres (back) "will be good to go" for Monday's Grapefruit League contest against the Colorado Rockies, according to Rogelio Castillo of Tigers ML Report. Torres had been scratched from the Tigers' lineup on Saturday due to lower back tightness, but it sounds like the injury isn't serious and won't require him to miss any additional time. All in all, this bodes well for Torres' availability on Opening Day against the San Diego Padres. He has been a productive hitter for the entirety of his MLB career, including 2025, when he slashed .256/.358/.387 with 16 homers, a 13.5% walk rate, a 16.1% strikeout rate, and 113 wRC+. In addition to being the Tigers' starting second baseman, Torres projects as the club's No. 2 hitter this year.
