Sterlin Thompson Fantasy Stats

Colorado Rockies rookie outfielder Sterlin Thompson had a day to remember on Wednesday night at Wrigley Field in the team's 8-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs. Thompson, who was serving as the designated hitter and batting eighth in the lineup, went 3-for-4 with the first two home runs (both solo) of his career, a double, and a strikeout to raise his season batting average to .242 and his OPS to .722. It was nice to see from the 24-year-old, who has battled for playing time since being called up by the Rockies. Thompson is now hitting .242/.319/.403 with two homers, nine RBI, seven runs scored, five walks, and 18 strikeouts in 69 plate appearances in his first 24 games in the major leagues. The former 31st overall pick in 2022 out of the University of Florida will likely struggle for regular at-bats now that Jake McCarthy has recovered from an illness, and he will likely head back to Triple-A Albuquerque when Mickey Moniak (ankle) returns from the injured list next week. Thompson isn't rostered in any Yahoo leagues right now.

The Colorado Rockies have sent outfield prospects Benny Montgomery and Sterlin Thompson to minor-league camp. Montgomery was the team's first-round draft pick in 2021 (eighth overall), while Thompson was a first-round competitive balance pick (31st overall) in 2022. They currently rank as Colorado's 15th and 17th-ranked prospects, respectively. Both spent all of 2024 at Double-A, with Montgomery slashing .283/.313/.500 but played in only 11 games due to season-ending left shoulder surgery, while Thompson slashed .245/.319/.385 with 13 home runs and 12 steals in 119 games. Thompson has a 2025 ETA per MLB.com's Top Prospects list, but with Montgomery missing so much time, his ETA is projected at 2026. We'll want to see more from both of them this season before considering them for fantasy, though.

Thompson has three home runs this month to go with seven RBI and is hitting .164. The Rockies' No. 5 prospect is struggling in June with an on-base percentage of just .208. The 23-year-old University of Florida prospect hit .293 last year across two levels but is hitting just .231 at Double-A this year. He has the pedigree to be a future big-league contributor but might just be adjusting slowly to a new level. He will look to build off Wednesday's performance.

Thompson hit his third long ball of the season for the Yard Goats, bringing his RBI total to 19. The 22-year-old is hitting just. 184 in June, and the three RBI are his first this month. Across two levels last year, he hit .293 with 14 homers and 56 RBI with 17 stolen bases. His consistent approach and athletic profile have helped him rise to the No. 5 overall prospect status with the Rockies. He has played all around the diamond defensively, and his position versatility could push up his major-league debut timeline. Whenever he does get the call and wherever he finds himself fitting in defensively, the bat should play, especially at Coors Field.

Thompson is now hitting .245 with seven RBI and a stolen base over his first 73 at-bats. Thompson, 22, is a consensus Top-100 prospect and joins Yanquiel Fernandez, Jordan Beck and Zac Veen in what is a potentially strong outfield for the Rockies. Thompson swings from the left side with good pitch recognition and uses the whole field to make contact. He won't be the biggest power hitter, but playing half his games at Coors Field will help with that. Thompson has been playing outfield of late, but can also play the middle of the field. He is unlikely to make an impact in 2024, but he is worth a look for dynasty managers.
