  • Deshaun Watson Believes He Can "Control the Offense" in Houston

After three weeks of training camp and one preseason game, Houston Texans quarterback and first-round draft pick Deshaun Watson believes he can "control the offense." Watson believes he has taken a big step forward in head coach Bill O'Brien's system, and O'Brien seems to agree, saying that Watson has looked impressive during joint practice with the New England Patriots. Though Watson is still not the starter in Houston, he's worth keeping an eye on in deeper formats as the season progresses. He showed in the team's preseason opener that he can make accurate passes and make plays on the run, giving him fantasy value if he overtakes current starter Tom Savage. Still, Watson will have his ups and downs if he sees the field in his rookie year, and he's a much better selection in dynasty leagues.

  • Deshaun Watson Receives First-Team Reps in Practice, Tom Savage Still The Starter

For the first time in training camp, Houston Texans rookie quarterback Deshaun Watson was taking snaps with the first-team offense, though head coach Bill O'Brien says not to read too much into it. O'Brien attributed the repetitions to the way the team rotated the offensive line during practice, but it's worth noting that Watson had been seeing time exclusively with the second-team, so this move could signal that Watson is further along in his development than the team expected. Tom Savage is still Houston's starter at the position, but Watson has been impressive throughout training camp and the first week of the preseason. Fantasy owners should keep an eye on the situation because Watson has decent upside if he eventually can overtake Savage.

  • Tom Savage and Deshaun Watson Impress in Preseason Opener

If the Houston Texans were hoping that their first preseason opener would provide some clarity in regards to their quarterback situation, Wednesday's game did not deliver that. If they were looking for promising signs that the offense could function with either quarterback -- presumptive starter Tom Savage and rookie Deshaun Watson -- then the team has to feel good after the game. Savage struggled on his first two drives before ending the game with nine consecutive completions. He finished the game with 69 yards and only two incompletions. Watson played from the second quarter until midway through the fourth. He went 15-of-25 for 179 yards and added a rushing touchdown as well. Though he looked shaky early -- he underthrew receivers on deep routes a couple of times -- Watson settled down and showed off his accuracy and his elusiveness. The Texans and fantasy owners who wind up with whichever player ends up starting for Houston should feel good after this game. The team should be able to move the ball much more consistently than they did in 2016. Savage will likely be the Week 1 starter, but he'll be on a short leash, and his limited upside makes him an uninteresting second fantasy QB. Watson is appealing for his elusiveness and ability to make plays with his legs, but he'll surely have a learning curve if he starts any games in his rookie year. He's a much better target in dynasty formats.
