The New York Jets have put in a request to interview Cleveland Browns offensive line coach Bill Callahan for their offensive coordinator job, according to sources. However, Callahan signed an extension with the Browns and will remain in Cleveland. Terms of the extension weren't reported. Callahan has been the offensive line coach for the Browns sine 2020 and previously had a stint with the Jets as their assistant head coach and O-line coach from 2008 to 2011. The Jets have already interviewed Kevin Patullo, Marcus Brady, Nathaniel Hackett and Nick Caley for the offensive coordinator job this offseason after parting ways with Mike LaFleur after the season.
The Cleveland Browns hired Jim Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator on Tuesday, according to a source. Schwartz will be replacing Joe Woods, who was fired last week after the team ranked 19th in defensive efficiency in 2022. Cleveland finished with a record of 7-10 and missed the postseason for the second straight season. Schwartz served as the Detroit Lions head coach from 2009 to 2013 and went 29-51 in that span while also leading the Lions to the playoffs in 2011. He won a Super Bowl ring as the defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2018. The 56-year-old spent the last two campaigns as a defensive assistant with the Tennessee Titans. He was a defensive coordinator with the Titans from 2001-08 and with the Buffalo Bills in 2014.
Cleveland Browns tight end Harrison Bryant caught both of his targets for 20 yards in the Week 18 loss to the division-rival Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday. Bryant was the clear backup to David Njoku at the position in his third NFL season, although he did set career-highs in catches (31), targets (42) and receiving yards (239) while catching just one touchdown in 17 games played in 2022. The 24-year-old wasn't helped by the fact that starter Deshaun Watson was suspended for most of the season. Bryant will be entering the final year of his rookie deal in 2023 and should continue to play second fiddle to Njoku, so he'll only become interesting in deeper fantasy leagues if Njoku misses time with an injury.
The Cleveland Browns relieved defensive coordinator Joe Woods of his duties on Monday, according to a source. The team has already requested permission to interview New England Patriots linebackers coach Jerod Mayo for the position. Woods had been the defensive coordinator under head coach Kevin Stefanski sine 2020. Cleveland made the postseason that year for the first time since 2002, but their defense has started slow each of the last two seasons and was ranked 31st in defensive efficiency at one point in October. Cleveland's run D was their weakness, finishing second-worst in the NFL in defensive total rush expected points added at minus-23.11.
The Cleveland Browns defense picked up one sack and forced one turnover in a 28-14 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 18. Cleveland allowed 337 yards of total offense while getting a sack from Myles Garrett and getting a forced fumble from Deion Jones. The Browns struggled on defense for much of the first half but they sneakily got better as a unit as the season went on. Garrett finishes the season with 15 sacks, one shy of the career high that he set last year. Look for the Browns to continue to bolster their defense in the coming offseason.
