Derek Barnett Re-Signing With Texans

The Houston Texans are re-signing defensive end Derek Barnett to a one-year deal, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The 27-year-old was claimed off waivers last November and racked up 19 tackles and 2.5 sacks in six games for Houston. Barnett was originally a first-round pick in the 2017 NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles after he broke Reggie White's school record for career sacks (33.0) at Tennessee. He did not develop into the star Philadelphia hoped for, producing 21.5 sacks in his first 72 games with the organization. In Houston, he'll be utilized as a rotational pass-rusher for a unit that now looks to be stacked with talent. Will Anderson Jr., Danielle Hunter, and Denico Autry all had at least seven sacks last year.

Eagles Waive Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles are waiving defensive end Derek Barnett on Friday, according to sources. The 14th overall pick of the 2017 NFL draft is expected to draw plenty of interest and find a new home quickly. Barnett missed the Eagles' last two games due to personal reasons and has also been bothered by an ankle injury in 2023. The 27-year-old hasn't been as productive in 2023 coming off pectoral surgery from last year, but he will be plenty attractive to teams looking for defensive line help the rest of the way. Barnett only has three tackles (one solo) on the year in eight games played, but he has racked up 21.5 sacks in 73 career NFL games (45 starts) since 2017 with Philadelphia.

Derek Barnett Gauging The Market To Play Elsewhere

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett is gauging the market for the potential to play elsewhere in 2023, according to sources. The Eagles plan to keep Barnett but also understand that a deep pass-rushing roster limits his playing time. The first-rounder in 2017 should have trade value, but it remains to be seen if the Eagles will find the right fit with another team. The 27-year-old is also trying to return from an ACL tear that he suffered in the season opener last year. There should be plenty of interest from pass-rush-needy teams heading into the 2023 regular season. In his six seasons in Philly, Barnett has recorded 147 tackles (95 solo), 21.5 sacks, 36 tackles for loss, 76 QB hits, and three fumble recoveries (one for a touchdown) in 65 games (45 starts).

Derek Barnett At OTAs Thursday

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett (knee) was at Thursday's organized team activities. He's not doing individual drills on the field, but he did warm up with the team. Barnett's 2022 season was over before it really started after he suffered a season-ending torn ACL in Week 1 against the Detroit Lions. The 26-year-old still might not be able to practice when training camp kicks off at the end of July, which could also affect his availability for the start of the 2023 season. The former first-rounder in 2017 had a career-high 46 tackles (20 solo), two sacks, seven tackles for loss and 11 QB hits in 16 games (15 starts) in 2021, and he has 21.5 career sacks in his six seasons in Philadelphia.

Eagles Place Derek Barnett On Injured Reserve

The Philadelphia Eagles have placed defensive end Derek Barnett (knee) on injured reserve. The 26-year-old suffered a torn ACL in their season-opener against the Lions, ending his 2022 campaign. The Eagles' defense started well in a win over the Lions but did allow them to make a push late in the game. The Eagles are an ascending team with playoff aspirations, so they'll need a strong performance on both sides of the ball to make a deep run and contend.

Eagles Re-Sign Derek Barnett

The Philadelphia Eagles re-signed defensive end Derek Barnett to an undisclosed two-year deal on Thursday, according to a source. Barnett had a career-high 46 tackles (20 solo), seven tackles for loss and 11 QB hits, but he also recorded a career-low two sacks in 16 games (15 starts) in his fifth season in Philadelphia. The 25-year-old former first-round pick has 21.5 career sacks in 64 games (45 starts) and will likely be rotated along the Eagles defensive line with Brandon Graham, Haason Reddick and Josh Sweat. Barnett has never totaled more than 6.5 sacks in a single NFL season, though, so he shouldn't be on the fantasy radar in IDP formats.

Eagles Defense Without Derek Barnett, Josh Sweat In Week 16

Philadelphia Eagles defensive ends Derek Barnett (calf) and Josh Sweat (wrist) have both been ruled out for Sunday's game versus the Cowboys. Barnett has been one of the most consistent commodities for the Eagles Defense this season, having compiled 34 total tackles to go along with 16 quarterback hits and 5.5 sacks. Sweat has been placed on injured reserve, which will end his regular season. There exists the possibility that he could return to the unit should they make the playoffs. Expect Genard Avery to see an increased role Sunday, but for the unit to get more creative in rushing the passer without either Barnett or Sweat. Philadelphia's defense did not hold much appeal coming into the week, and without either of the aforementioned d-ends, the Andy Dalton-led Cowboys are not worthy of targeting with streamer options.

Derek Barnett Done For The Season

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett (shoulder) is having season-ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday, according to a source. The former first-round pick had 17 tackles and 2.5 sacks on the season, so his loss is a blow to the Eagles defensive line moving forward. However, their defense/special teams will remain a strong play in Week 8 against a Jaguars offense that has been awful behind quarterback Blake Bortles in the absence of running back Leonard Fournette (hamstring).

Derek Barnett Participated Fully in OTAs

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett (hernia) was able to participate fully in organized team activities. He had a sports hernia operation after the Super Bowl but is fully recovered and had no issues participating fully in voluntary OTA practices. He was a first-round pick last year and is expected to play an even bigger role this season. Last season, he graded out as the No. 37 4-3 defensive end, according to Pro Football Focus.

Derek Barnett Undergoes Sports Hernia Surgery

Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Derek Barnett underwent sports hernia surgery right after the Super Bowl. He's expected to be at 100 percent and will be completely ready to go for Week 1. Barnett had 21 tackles, five sacks, one forced fumble and two fumble recoveries his rookie year. He'll likely get more work this coming season as a member of a very strong defensive front.
