Shedeur Sanders Tosses Interception Late in Preseason Opener vs. Bears

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders had mixed results in Saturday's preseason opener against the Chicago Bears but his performance was marred by a fourth-quarter interception. Deshaun Watson, Sanders' main competition for the starting quarterback job, led the Browns on their two scoring drives in the team's 34-10 loss to Chicago. Meanwhile, Sanders was 6-of-11 passing for 79 yards. He added two rushes for three yards, playing most of the third quarter and early in the fourth. Sanders completed a 24-yard pass to Gage Larvadain and hit Luke Floriea on a 35-yard strike. Sanders will continue to compete with Watson for the starting quarterback job.

Shedeur Sanders Will Start in Browns' Second Preseason Game

ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi reports that Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders will start in Thursday's preseason game against the Buffalo Bills. Head coach Todd Monken announced that Deshaun Watson and Sanders will split first-team reps during joint practices with the Bills. Additionally, Monken plans to let Sanders play the first half with Watson playing the third quarter, and Dillon Gabriel playing the fourth quarter. Watson looked sharp in his preseason start by completing 11 of 15 passes for 126 yards, no touchdowns, and no interceptions. In Sanders' limited action, he completed six of 11 passes for 79 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception. The two remain in a close competition for the starting job that has a chance to be decided after the second preseason game.

Shedeur Sanders Carries Some Fantasy Appeal in Deeper Formats

Cleveland Browns second-year quarterback out of Colorado, Shedeur Sanders, enters the 2026 season in a quarterback competition with Deshaun Watson, who missed the entire 2025 season while recovering from a re-ruptured right Achilles. Sanders played in eight games in 2025 and threw for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions, and rushed for 169 yards and one touchdown. While he does provide some fantasy appeal with his rushing upside and big-play ability, it remains to be seen if he will have that opportunity. Watson hasn't performed at a high level since 2020, but he is still 30 years old and likely has a fast track to be the starter for the Browns over Sanders. Sanders was extremely inefficient in 2025, ranking 30th in yards per attempt, 38th in true passer rating, and 38th in adjusted yards per attempt. Sanders offers some dynasty appeal given his age, and in superflex formats, he could be used as a bench spot if he wins the starting job. RotoBaller ranks Sanders as the QB34 entering the season.

Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders Listed as Co-Starters on Depth Chart

The Cleveland Browns still haven't picked a starting quarterback. According to Zac Jackson, the team's unofficial depth chart will list Deshaun Watson "OR" Shedeur Sanders at the top of the position when it is released Tuesday. Sanders took all of the first-team reps Monday, but Cleveland has bounced those opportunities between the two quarterbacks throughout training camp. Sanders started the final seven games of his rookie season, finishing the year with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Watson is trying to win the job after missing all of 2025 while recovering from a re-ruptured right Achilles. He returned for the full offseason program and has been competing throughout camp. The "OR" designation doesn't tell us who will ultimately start Week 1, but it makes one thing pretty clear: this race is still open. Until the Browns settle it, neither quarterback carries enough job security to be trusted in standard one-quarterback fantasy leagues.

Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders to Continue Alternating First-Team Practice Reps

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken said on Wednesday that quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will continue to alternate first-team reps in training camp practices until he names a starter, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. Monken said who leads the No. 1 offense in the joint practice against the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 20 will follow the natural rotation, which means it would likely be Watson. There has been no clear leader in this QB competition, although Sanders reportedly had his best day of camp on Tuesday. Watson, meanwhile, struggled early, but he reportedly had his best day of camp on Wednesday. We should start to see some separation in the competition once the team's preseason slate kicks off on Aug. 15 against the Chicago Bears. Neither QB is attractive in single-QB fantasy formats, and whoever wins the starting job entering the 2026 regular season will be on a short leash with minimal fantasy upside.

Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson to Alternate Preseason Starts

Cleveland Browns quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson have alternated first-team reps through the install period of training camp, and head coach Todd Monken intends to continue that approach into the preseason. Monken told NFL reporter Cameron Wolfe, "[I'm] going to start one quarterback the first preseason game, the other one will start the second one, and then most likely, the leader of the competition's going to start the third," also saying, "The next week is going to decide who gets each of those games." Monken has stressed that he wants one of his quarterbacks to make it clear that they deserve the starting job, noting that despite his growth over the past four months, Sanders still has room to improve, while Watson needs to cut down on the turnovers after throwing six interceptions through this stage of training camp. The Browns play their first preseason game against the Bears on August 15, and who gets that start could be a telling indication of who could be the team's Week 1 starter.

Shedeur Sanders Has Good Practice with First-Team Offense

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders worked with the first-team offense for the third time in training camp and had his best day with that group. Sanders was on target, made high-level throws, and outplayed Deshaun Watson, who was reportedly inconsistent and struggled with accuracy on Tuesday. Watson entered as the favorite to win the Browns' starting job, but it appears the tides are turning in the second-year quarterback's favor. The Browns open the regular season against the Jacksonville Jaguars and will have a decision by then. Until then, Sanders will need to remain on point and defy the odds to keep the starting job.

Shedeur Sanders Building Momentum in Browns QB Battle

Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders continues to make his case for the starting job. Rookie Watch reported that Sanders led the team's quarterbacks with 13 completions and four touchdowns during Saturday's practice, but the session was not as clean as those numbers suggest. He connected with Jerry Jeudy for a score and hit rookie Denzel Boston on a contested deep ball, then threw an interception late and had another pass dropped by a defender. Sanders is coming off an uneven rookie season in which he completed 56.6% of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions across eight appearances. He and Deshaun Watson handled most of the first-team work during the offseason, but head coach Todd Monken has made it clear that the Browns are not close to naming a starter. Sanders has created some early momentum, though the competition should become more meaningful once Cleveland reaches preseason games and joint practices. He would carry Superflex appeal if he wins the job, but fantasy managers should not treat him as Cleveland's QB1 yet.

Shedeur Sanders to Start the Team's First Padded Practice

Cleveland Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson is taking the first-team reps at QB in training camp practice on Friday, as the alternating practices with second-year signal-caller Shedeur Sanders continue, according to ESPN's Daniel Oyefusi. It means that Sanders will see the first-team reps for the team's first padded practice on Monday. As expected, the two QBs are splitting first-team work early in training camp. There is no clear leader in the quarterback competition this early, although Watson noticeably struggled the other day and threw back-to-back interceptions during 11-on-11 work. Head coach Todd Monken hasn't given a timetable for when he wants to announce the winner of the competition, but he did say he plans to play his starters in the preseason. We should have a better idea of who the leader in the competition is once pads come on. Watson has the experience over Sanders, but he also missed all of 2025 due to a torn Achilles tendon. Whoever wins the Browns' QB job will have a short leash and will be a low-end, low-upside QB2 option for fantasy managers in superflex leagues.

Deshaun Watson, Shedeur Sanders to Continue Splitting First-Team Reps

Cleveland Browns head coach Todd Monken said on Wednesday that quarterbacks Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders will continue to split first-team reps early on in training camp, according to Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN. Monken also mentioned that there is no definitive timeline for when he wants to name the team's starting QB. We might not know for a while still which way Monken is leaning in the team's QB battle. Watson, 30, has the experience edge, but he has also played in just 19 games since joining the Browns on a lucrative deal, and he didn't play at all in 2025 after needing multiple surgeries to fix a torn Achilles tendon suffered in 2024. Sanders, meanwhile, has the momentum and has impressed the coaching staff since he fell to the fifth round in the 2025 NFL draft. The 24-year-old showed plenty of growing pains as a rookie with 1,400 passing yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions in eight games (seven starts). Whoever wins the Browns' QB job to begin the regular season will be on a short leash and will be nothing more than a low-end QB2 target in two-QB superflex fantasy leagues.
