Greg Newsome II News
Cleveland Browns defensive back Greg Newsome II (hamstring) won't be sidelined for long, according to head coach Kevin Stefanski. The 22-year-old hasn't practiced since Tuesday and sat out the preseason opener. Despite that, the Browns don't expect Newsome to miss Week 1 of the regular season. The former first round pick battled multiple injuries last season. Although, he still had success with 37 tackles and nine passes defended through 13 games. Fantasy managers who have the Browns defense rostered shouldn't be worried about Newsome missing significant time from this injury.
The Cleveland Browns officially signed rookie cornerback Greg Newsome II to a four-year deal after selecting him 26th overall in April's draft. Newsome was a three-year standout at Northwestern University, finishing top five in passes defensed among all Big Ten players in 2019 and 2020 while also receiving third-team All-American honors in 2020. Newsome figures to compete with Greedy Williams for starting snaps across from star corner Denzel Ward, and reviews about his performance in offseason workouts were strong. Expect Newsome to contribute significantly in 2021 even if he doesn't earn a starting outside corner job by week one.
The Cleveland Browns selected Northwestern cornerback Gregory Newsome II with the No. 26 overall pick in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft on Thursday night. He's the second Northwestern player to go in the first round this year. Newsome wasn't attacked much in coverage in college and must prove that he can stay healthy at the next level. He has great length, athleticism and recovery speed in the secondary. Newsome was glued to receivers in college and has the tools to be a pretty good lockdown cornerback, if he can stay healthy. He doesn't have excellent size, though, which could be a problem against big-bodied receivers in the NFL. Newsome is definitely more of a man-coverage guy.
