Chris Manhertz News
Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Chris Manhertz caught his only pass for a 22-yard touchdown in the team's 37-21 Week 1 defeat against the Houston Texans. Manhertz will forever live on Trevor Lawrence's highlight reel as the recipient of the rookie's first career touchdown pass, but he was a non-factor for most of the game. As he has for most of his career, Manhertz mostly served as a blocker in this one while James O'Shaughnessy functioned as the preferred receiving tight end. Despite catching the touchdown pass, Manhertz is firmly off the radar in all fantasy formats, and Jacob Hollister's presumed debut next week only limits his chances of changing that.
Jacksonville Jaguars veteran tight end Chris Manhertz is taking charge of the team's tight end room that lacks established passing-game contributors at the NFL level. Per SI's John Shipley, "Manhertz is Jacksonville's appointed leader of the tight end room," and "he is seeing more targets with the starting offense and being asked to win as a route-runner on a more frequent basis." Manhertz has dominated as a blocker throughout his five-year career, but he's only amassed 12 receptions in that time. Manhertz and the team are clearly looking for him to at least triple his career reception total this season, but it remains to be seen if he is actually capable of doing so. Manhertz is off the radar in fantasy leagues at this point in time, but he could be a factor if he becomes Trevor Lawrence's preferred TE target on the team.
Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Chris Manhertz sits atop the depth chart going into training camp despite amassing only 12 career receptions in five NFL seasons. Manhertz has been known more for his blocking than his receiving prowess to this point, but that could change in 2021. This offseason, according to SI's John Shipley, Manhertz "stood out time and time again" and "looked quicker... while also bringing in several tough sideline grabs." It's also somewhat notable that Manhertz attended George Kittle's tight end university camp. Manhertz will compete primarily with James O'Shaughnessy for TE targets in 2021. Overall, it's likely that each of them mixes in, which would negatively impact the fantasy value for both players. Barring a significant training camp rise, consider Manhertz off of the fantasy radar for 2021.
