Malachi Fields Could be "Power Forward" at Wide Receiver

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen said that rookie third-round wide receiver Malachi Fields, who stands at 6-foot-4 and 223 pounds, can be the team's "power forward" in the WR room in 2026, according to Jordan Raanan of ESPN. The Giants lost Wan'Dale Robinson in free agency this offseason, and Darius Slayton (abdomen) will be out until July after core-muscle surgery, so the 22-year-old Fields could see plenty of offensive snaps for the G-Men in his first year in the NFL next to Malik Nabers (knee) and offseason acquisition Darnell Mooney after the Giants traded up to select him in the third round. Fields spent the first four years in college at Virginia before finishing his career at Notre Dame in 2025, where he caught 36 passes for 630 yards (17.5 yards per catch) and five touchdowns in 12 games played. Fields is a big-play threat that could really complement Nabers well in an offense led by rising young QB Jaxson Dart. There's plenty to like about Fields long-term in dynasty/keeper leagues, but he'll probably go undrafted in redraft leagues later this year.

Giants Trade Up to Pick 74, Select Malachi Fields

The New York Giants have traded up to pick 74 in the 2026 NFL Draft to select University of Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, New York sent the Cleveland Browns picks 105 and 145, along with a 2027 fourth-round selection, in exchange for pick 74. Fields spent the first four seasons of his collegiate career at the University of Virginia before transferring to Notre Dame for his fifth year. Across 12 games with the Fighting Irish in 2025, he recorded 36 receptions for 630 yards and five touchdowns. Early in his NFL career, Fields will likely be battling with veteran wideouts Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin III for playing time with the Giants. If it all comes together for Fields, he could be a dangerous downfield threat in the NFL.

Malachi Fields' Draft Stock Looks to Be Sliding

Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields played five collegiate seasons, but he was never able to top the 811 receiving yards from his 2023 sophomore season at Virginia. From an analytical perspective, his 2.20 yards per route run as a senior, which has become a strong indicator of fantasy success, ranks in the bottom half of the draft class. Fields made several highlight-worthy plays during Senior Bowl practices and was commonly linked to the late first round in early mock drafts, but a rocky showing at the NFL Combine, along with further dissection of his production profile, has now landed him closer to late Day 2 status in more recent mocks. With no clear consensus on how the rest of the rookie wide receiver class will shake out behind the Big Three of Jordan Tyson, Carnell Tate, and Makai Lemon, draft capital will become a telling piece of his rookie profile.

Malachi Fields at Least a Tier Below the Top Rookie WRs

Notre Dame wide receiver Malachi Fields measured in at over 6'4" and 218 pounds at the NFL Combine, and while he put up impressive numbers in the vertical and broad jumps, his 4.61 40-yard dash reinforced some of the slow releases seen on his tape. The fifth senior has had an up-and-down pre-draft showing, consistent with some of the inconsistencies that marred his college career. He profiles as a physical boundary receiver who might struggle to create separation but will hold an advantage in most contested catch situations. After the top three receivers come off the board in rookie drafts, Fields could be in play in the next tier but will likely fall into the mid rounds.
