Jameis Winston News
New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton said he expects quarterbacks Jameis Winston and Taysom Hill to compete for the starting quarterback job in 2021 after Drew Brees announced his retirement this week. Hill has been impressive for his versatility, but his viability as a full-time starter under center seems less appealing with Brees now retired. Winston, although turnover-prone in his career, has intriguing upside as the starter. Hill took the job when Brees was injured in 2020 because of his experience and the fact that Winston hadn't been with the team for a full calendar year. Winston, the former No. 1 overall pick, probably has the advantage in the competition, and he could have some QB1 upside in this offense if he wins the job this summer.
The New Orleans Saints and quarterback Jameis Winston worked out a one-year deal on Monday with base salary of $5.5 million guaranteed. Winston can earn as much as $12 million through incentives, according to a league source. The former first overall pick and Heisman Trophy winner spent his first five seasons with the Buccaneers before signing a one-year deal last year with the Saints. The Bears were serious suitors for his services before he returned to New Orleans. The 27-year-old completed 61.3 percent of his passes for 19,737 yards, 121 touchdowns and 88 interceptions with Tampa. He led the league with 5,109 passing yards in 2019, but also became the first QB in history to throw at least 30 touchdowns and 30 interceptions. Winston will compete for the starting gig in training camp with Taysom Hill.
Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network is reporting that quarterback Jameis Winston is the early leader to take the reins from Drew Brees and become the New Orleans Saints starter in 2021. Winston threw just 12 attempts this season and backed up Brees and Taysom Hill, but Winston has a much better arm than Hill and seems to be the better long-term fit. The former No. 1 overall pick does have a turnover problem, but maybe head coach Sean Payton can scheme that out of him. Winston would be a very appealing fantasy sleeper pick if he does earn this job.
