Travis Hunter Will Still Play Receiver in 2026

Sports Illustrated's John Shipley writes that Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter (knee) will still play wide receiver in his second year in 2026. A TV segment recently expressed disappointment that Hunter will "no longer" play both sides of the ball, which is incorrect. General manager James Gladstone said back in January that the former Heisman Trophy winner will play more cornerback in his sophomore season, but he will still play some receiver. In seven games in his rookie campaign, Hunter caught 28 passes for 298 yards and one touchdown on 45 targets through seven games before suffering a season-ending knee injury that required surgery. The 22-year-old second overall pick had a breakout game in Week 7 against the Los Angeles Rams with eight catches for 101 yards and his only touchdown before injuring his knee in practice the following week. Hunter's fantasy value is by no means dead going forward, but it will be even more difficult to make a consistent fantasy impact in 2026 if he's playing fewer snaps on offense.

Travis Hunter to be Full-Time Cornerback, Part-Time Wide Receiver in 2026

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter (knee) should be a full participant by training camp, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Hunter suffered a torn LCL during practice in October and missed the entire second half of the 2025 campaign. When he returns to the field, he'll be a full-time cornerback and part-time receiver. While Hunter was heavily involved as a receiver before getting injured in his rookie season, this latest update falls in line with the general consensus from before the 2025 NFL Draft that Hunter offered the most value on defense. It seems highly unlikely that Hunter will match last year's average of 6.4 targets per game. Not only is he going to play fewer offensive snaps, but he also faces plenty of competition for targets with Brian Thomas Jr., Jakobi Meyers, and Parker Washington all in the mix. Hunter currently ranks #74 overall in RotoBaller's early fantasy football rankings for the 2026 season.

Travis Hunter to be "Limited Participant" During Offseason Workouts

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said that wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter (knee) "will be a limited participant" throughout offseason workouts with the hope that he'll be ready for training camp this summer, according to Alessandra Pontbriand of WJXT4 Sports. Hunter is reportedly "well ahead of schedule" in his recovery from surgery to fix a torn LCL in his right knee that he suffered in his rookie campaign in 2025. Still, the Jags aren't going to rush the former Heisman Trophy winner this offseason. Barring a setback this summer, the 22-year-old two-way star and former second overall pick should be good to go for Week 1 of the 2026 regular season this fall. Unfortunately for his managers in dynasty leagues, Hunter is expected to be deployed much more as a defensive back in his sophomore season than on offense. His fantasy value was inflated going into his rookie year, and Hunter finished with only 298 receiving yards and one touchdown as a receiver on 28 receptions in seven games before his season-ending knee injury.

Travis Hunter "Very Well Ahead" of Schedule in Rehab From Knee Surgery

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said that cornerback/wide receiver Travis Hunter (knee) is "very well ahead" of schedule in his rehab from right-knee surgery on Nov. 11 of his rookie season, according to Ryan O'Halloran of the Jacksonville Florida Times-Union. Hunter injured the LCL in his knee during practice on Oct. 30 and never played again in 2025. Coen "cannot say for certain" if Hunter will be cleared to take part in organized team activities or for mandatory minicamp in May to June. The 22-year-old former Heisman Trophy winner at Colorado was just starting to see a bigger role on offense last year before injuring his knee, and he finished with 28 catches for 298 yards and one touchdown in seven games played. The Jaguars have said they plan on Hunter having a much bigger role as a defensive back in 2026, which is bad news for the former second overall pick's stock in dynasty/keeper leagues. The Jaguars are pretty set at wideout already with Jakobi Meyers, Brian Thomas Jr., and Parker Washington, so it will be a tough battle for snaps and targets in Jacksonville's offense moving forward for Hunter.

Is Travis Hunter Now an IDP-Only Asset?

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter (knee) saw nearly a 2:1 offense-to-defense snap-count split in his rookie campaign and appeared to be on the verge of a breakout before an LCL knee injury ended his season in Week 7. With reports out of Jacksonville that Hunter will spend year two as a full-time defensive back with part-time offensive usage, the 22-year-old has slipped outside the top-100 dynasty players in consensus rankings. The Jaguars remain adamant that they will not trade receiver Brian Thomas Jr., creating a bit of a bottleneck at the position with Jakobi Meyers and Parker Washington, and making Hunter more valuable to the team on defense. Even in IDP formats, cornerbacks often rely on outlier seasons to gain fantasy relevance, and Hunter's limited work at receiver might not be enough to make him anything more than a late-round upside-play.

Travis Hunter to be "Full-Time Defensive Back, Part-Time Receiver" in 2026

Jacksonville Jaguars two-way player Travis Hunter (knee) is expected to be 100% healthy for Week 1 of the 2026 season this fall, according to Cameron Wolfe of the NFL Network, although his usage will change a lot. Hunter's rookie season ended early due to an LCL knee injury that required surgery, and he finished with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown on 45 targets in seven games played. Wolfe reports that the Jaguars plan to use the former Heisman Trophy winner as a full-time cornerback and part-time wide receiver in 2026. In 2025, Hunter played more than double his snaps on offense than as a defensive back. Jacksonville thinks Hunter can be an elite cornerback while also being an impact player on offense, although this news is going to drastically affect his fantasy value in a negative way entering Year 2.

Travis Hunter to Primarily Play Cornerback in 2026?

ESPN's Michael DiRocco writes that "early indications" are that Jacksonville Jaguars two-way star and former Heisman Trophy winner Travis Hunter is "primarily going to be a cornerback and have a package of plays on offense." Hunter's rookie season in the NFL was cut short by a season-ending knee injury, but he finished the year as more of a receiver than a cornerback. He played 67% of the offensive snaps and 36% of the defensive snaps before his non-contact knee injury in practice on Oct. 30. The Jaguars will continue to use Hunter on offense, but they have more of a need at defensive back going into next season. Hunter could start across from Jourdan Lewis while also playing in nickel situations. What general manager James Gladstone does in free agency will help clarify what exactly the Jags will do with Hunter, but right now, it looks like his fantasy football stock will drop drastically.

Travis Hunter Expected to Play More Defense in 2026

Jacksonville Jaguars general manager James Gladstone said that wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter's (knee) rehab from a torn LCL is going "as expected," and he will play on both offense and defense next season, according to Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network. Hunter played 67% of the offensive snaps and 36% of the defensive snaps in his first seven NFL games in 2025 before suffering a season-ending knee injury. Wolfe says to expect Hunter to play much more on the defensive side in 2026, which will be a bigger need for the Jaguars. Hunter, the No. 2 overall pick in last April's draft, had surgery on his knee on Nov. 11. The 22-year-old caught 28 of his 45 targets for 298 yards and a touchdown before his injury, but he was starting to see a bigger role right before he got hurt. Hunter should be fully ready for the start of next season, but coming off injury and expected to see less time on offense means that his price tag on draft day will most certainly drop considerably from what it was going into his rookie season.

Travis Hunter to Remain a Two-Way Player in 2026

Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver/defensive back Travis Hunter (knee) unfortunately saw his rookie campaign come to an early end. Hunter was only able to play in seven games before suffering a season-ending knee injury that required surgery. There was speculation that Hunter might make the switch to one position following this injury. So far, the Jags have stated they plan to continue using Hunter as a two-way player. His injury occurred during a non-contact play during practice, so it doesn't sound like it had anything to do with the wear-and-tear of playing two positions. He finished his rookie season with 28 receptions for 298 yards and one touchdown.

Travis Hunter To Be A One-Way Player?

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Liam Coen said any discussion about making wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter a one-way player in the future is "premature," according to Michael DiRocco of ESPN. Hunter (knee) is out for the remainder of the 2025 season following surgery to repair an LCL injury, which has only amplified questions about whether he will continue to play both offense and defense. The former Heisman Trophy winner was billed as a once-in-a-generation player, although many doubted he would be able to withstand the same number of two-way snaps that he played as a standout at Colorado. For fantasy managers, especially those in dynasty formats, Hunter becoming only a wide receiver would be the absolute best-case scenario. Offensively, Hunter finished his rookie season with 28 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown in seven games.
