Ameer Abdullah News
The Minnesota Vikings re-signed running back Ameer Abdullah to an undisclosed deal on Monday. Minnesota picked Abdullah up on waiver last year, and he ended the season the team's primary kick returner after flaming out in four seasons with the Lions. In 10 games with the Lions and Vikes last year, Abdullah had just one carry. He had 165 totes for 552 yards (3.3 yards per carry) and four touchdowns in 2017 in 14 games. Abdullah will provide depth behind Dalvin Cook and Michael Boone in 2019.
The Minnesota Vikings claimed running back Ameer Abdullah off waivers from the Lions on Wednesday, according to a source. Abdullah is basically a forgotten man after he was active for just three games with Detroit this year, but he'll help boost Minnesota's running back depth with rookie Roc Thomas injured. Still, Abdullah will face long odds of even seeing the field with his new team as long as Dalvin Cook doesn't suffer any setbacks coming off the bye week.
The Detroit Lions signed free-agent wide receiver Bruce Ellington on Tuesday and waived running back Ameer Abdullah in a corresponding move, according to a source. Ellington caught eight of 12 targets for 92 yards and a touchdown for the Texans in three games earlier this season before he was released. He'll help with depth after the team traded Golden Tate to the Eagles at the deadline, but Ellington is unlikely to come into much fantasy value behind Marvin Jones and Kenny Golladay. Abdullah was mostly a healthy scratch this year behind Kerryon Johnson, LeGarrette Blount and Theo Riddick, and he had just three touches on the season in the three games he was active for.
Detroit Lions running back Ameer Abdullah caught his only target for six yards in Sunday's loss to Seattle. This was the only touch Abdullah was given in the game. However, he also fumbled a kick return in the second quarter. Abdullah was active because Theo Riddick missed his second consecutive game, but it's clear the team doesn't value him in the offense. Even if Riddick misses a third game next week against the Vikings, Abdullah will continue to be an afterthought.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Golden Tate (ankle) and running back Ameer Abdullah (ankle) were both limited in practice on Wednesday, as was defensive end Ezekiel Ansah (shoulder). Tate's injury is worth monitoring, but we suspect he'll be fine for Week 8 against the Seahawks. Tate has had two mediocre games in a row and hasn't scored since finding the end zone twice on Sept. 30 against the Cowboys. Still, he'll remain a WR3/flex for fantasy owners. Abdullah was active for just the second time this year with Theo Riddick out last week. He's not useful in fantasy even if Riddick misses another game. Ansah has yet to play since getting hurt in the season opener, but he looks closer to a return. Detroit could definitely use their best pass rusher back in the mix.
