Khalil Herbert Could Be On Roster Bubble

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert could find himself on the roster bubble as the summer continues, according to Adam Jahns of The Athletic. During a new 53-man roster projection, Jahns and Kevin Fishbain tabbed Herbert to make the team out of training camp, but Jahns also wrote that "it wouldn't be surprising if Herbert is considered on the bubble at Halas Hall." The 26-year-old appeared in one dozen games last year, rushing for 611 yards and two touchdowns on 132 carries. He also added 20 catches, 134 receiving yards, and one receiving touchdown. While he certainly showed flashes of meaningful production in 2023, he lost opportunities to Justin Fields at times. Fields is now gone, but he's been replaced by Caleb Williams, who is still mobile enough to make plays happen with his legs. Most importantly, though, the Bears signed D'Andre Swift, who will enter Week 1 as the starting running back, barring an unforeseen development. Therefore, Herbert, who is entering a contract year, could become expendable as the Bears opt to give more reps to Swift and second-year back Roschon Johnson.

Khalil Herbert A Trade Candidate?

The Athletic's Kevin Fishbain wonders if running back Khalil Herbert would be a trade candidate if the Chicago Bears bring in an undrafted rookie at the position and he impresses. Of course, this all depends on the development of Roschon Johnson. Herbert is entering the final year of his rookie deal. D'Andre Swift signed a three-year contract with the Bears this offseason, while Johnson has the same number of years remaining on his first contract after being drafted in the fourth round in 2023. Herbert is a solid back, but RBI is a position that changes often for teams. Chicago's coaching staff is high on Johnson, and the 26-year-old Herbert dealt with ankle and back injuries last year after leading the NFL with 5.7 yards per carry in 2022. The addition of Swift in this backfield obviously hurts Herbert's fantasy stock a great deal heading into the 2024 season.

Khalil Herbert Quiet In Final Game

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert had another chance to see a bulk of the workload with D'Onta Foreman (coach's decision) out again in Week 18. The 25-year-old rushed 12 times for just 28 yards in the team's 17-9 loss to the Packers while also catching two passes for 13 yards. After rushing for 731 yards a year ago, Herbert couldn't take a step forward and ended the year with just 583 yards with similar volume. The Bears drafted Roschon Johnson in 2023, and Herbert failed to separate himself this year as the true lead back for the foreseeable future. While the Bears were a run-heavy team in 2023, which allowed Herbert to thrive at times, they will either endure massive offensive change or continue to have a quarterback who takes rushing opportunities away. Herbert will look to earn a full bell-cow role in 2024.

Khalil Herbert Expected To Play Versus Packers

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert (back) is expected to play in Week 18 despite being listed as questionable, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 25-year-old has looked exceptional over the last two weeks despite playing just half of the team's offensive snaps. During that two-game window, he has 236 rushing yards, 14 receiving yards, and a pair of touchdowns. He should remain the Bears' leading rusher on Sunday, ranking as a strong RB2 option in most fantasy leagues.

Khalil Herbert Questionable For Week 18

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert (back, personal) is listed as questionable to play on Sunday in Green Bay against the Packers. Herbert popped up on the injury report in Week 18 on Thursday with a limited practice and did not practice at all on Friday, putting his status in question for the season finale. Making the 25-year-old even more of a shaky fantasy option this weekend is the fact that the Bears don't play until the later window on Sunday. It's potentially bad news for fantasy managers in season-long leagues still playing for a championship, as Herbert has been Chicago's backfield leader the last two games and has gone over 100 yards rushing in each contest with two touchdowns. If he does not play or is limited against Green Bay, rookie Roschon Johnson and D'Onta Foreman will split Chicago's backfield duties.

Khalil Herbert Dealing With Back Injury

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert (back) popped up on the Week 18 injury report on Thursday and was listed as a limited practice participant. Midweek injuries are usually never a good sign, especially with a team heading into a meaningless Week 18 regular season finale against the Green Bay Packers. The Packers are still fighting for a playoff spot, but the Bears aren't in postseason consideration and could decide to rest Herbert if he's at all questionable to play. If the 25-year-old can't play this weekend, it would throw Chicago's ground game into a state of flux with rookie Roschon Johnson and D'Onta Foreman. After totaling 16 total rushing yards in Weeks 14 and 15, Herbert went off for 236 yards and two touchdowns on 38 carries the last two weeks. His injury now casts doubt on him as an RB2 for fantasy managers against the Packers.

Khalil Herbert Runs For Season-High 124 Rushing Yards

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert achieved a season-high in rushing yards for the second consecutive week, totaling 124 yards on 18 attempts with a touchdown in the team's 37-17 victory. With D'Onta Foreman (coach's decision) once again sidelined, Herbert assumed the lead role in the Bears' backfield and delivered another impressive performance. In the three instances where the 25-year-old operated as the workhorse, he garnered at least 19 PPR points and rushed for over 100 yards each time. While rookie Roschon Johnson continued to handle the majority of passing game work, Herbert maintained his status as the primary early-down and goal-line rusher. Looking ahead to Week 18 against the Packers, who allow the 12th-most points per game to running backs this season, Herbert stands as a solid fantasy option, especially if Foreman remains unavailable.

Khalil Herbert Tries To Build On Strong Game

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert is riding high after a season-best performance in Week 16, rushing for 112 yards on 20 carries. Filling in as the lead back with D'Onta Foreman absent due to personal reasons, the 25-year-old showcased his prowess. In both games where Herbert assumed the workhorse role, he delivered consistent fantasy value, scoring at least 19 PPR points while rushing for over 100 yards each time. However, with Foreman set to return in Week 17, Herbert's workload is expected to diminish. Despite the likely reduction in touches, his Week 16 dominance suggests he should still see around eight carries on the ground. Yet, the impending challenge lies in finding the endzone for fantasy relevance. Facing the Falcons, who allow the second-fewest points per game to running backs, Herbert carries a degree of risk for fantasy managers in Week 17.

Khalil Herbert Leads Backfield In Week 16 Win

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert had his second-best showing of the season in the team's 27-16 victory over the Cardinals, operating as the lead back. The 25-year-old set a season-high in rushing yards and attempts, running 20 times for 112 yards and a touchdown. With D'Onta Foreman out due to personal reasons, Herbert stepped in as the lead back and had a very productive day against a weak Cardinals' run defense. The Bears jumped out to an early lead and leaned on the run game, with Herbert as the primary beneficiary. The Bears take on the Falcons in Week 17, who allow the second-fewest points per game to running backs this season. If Foreman is out again, Herbert has value, but otherwise, the Bears' backfield is wise to avoid.

Khalil Herbert In A Committee In Week 16

Chicago Bears running back Khalil Herbert has struggled to reclaim a significant role in the backfield after missing five games. In Week 15, the 25-year-old rushed six times for just eight yards and caught one pass for four yards. Since returning from injury, Herbert has yet to play more than 43% of the snaps, and that percentage has been decreasing each week. With Roschon Johnson handling most of the receiving work and D'Onta Foreman serving as the preferred early rusher and goal-line back, Herbert will need a standout performance to earn more carries. The Bears face the Cardinals in Week 16, a team allowing the most points per game to running backs this season. Unless Herbert can secure a touchdown, he is unlikely to offer much fantasy value in Week 16.
