Colin Holderman Set to Begin Rehab Assignment

Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Colin Holderman (thumb) has been sent on a rehab assignment to Single-A Bradenton, per MLB.com. The right-hander successfully completed a three-inning simulated game on June 25. Holderman struggled this season before getting hurt. He pitched to a 9.00 ERA and 2.07 WHIP with a minuscule 14.9% strike rate across 15 innings (14 games). Holderman holds a career 4.01 ERA and 22.7% strikeout rate in 150 2/3 big league innings, so he should be better upon his return from injury. The Pirates have an established closer in David Bednar, who is amidst a resurgent season. However, should Bednar be moved to a contender at the deadline, Holderman could be a name to monitor as a late-season save pickup.

Colin Holderman Taking a "Pause of Healing"

Pittsburgh Pirates right-handed reliever Colin Holderman (thumb) has taken a "pause of healing," according to Todd Tomczyk. Holderman remains on the injured list while he deals with right-thumb tenosynovitis. He received a cortisone injection last week but has yet to resume throwing. The Pirates will re-evaluate him on Friday. The 29-year-old landed on the IL back on May 29. We don't have a concrete timetable on when Holderman might rejoin Pittsburgh's bullpen, but because of the fact that he was shut down from throwing, he's likely at least several weeks away from a return. Before getting injured, Holderman appeared in 14 games in relief and allowed 15 earned runs on 20 hits (three homers) while walking 11 and fanning 11 in 15 innings. He should remain on waiver wires in pretty much all leagues.

Colin Holderman Hits 15-Day Injured List

The Pittsburgh Pirates have placed relief pitcher Colin Holderman (knee) on the 15-day injured list due to a right knee sprain. In a corresponding move, the Pirates promoted right-handed pitcher Chase Shugart from Triple-A. Holderman has logged four 2/3 innings through the early part of the campaign. However, he has not found much success, allowing five earned runs and holding a 4:6 BB:K. Even with David Bednar still in Triple-A, the Pirates opted not to bring Bednar back to the major leagues. As a result, fantasy managers should expect Dennis Santana to stand alone as the clear ninth-inning option in Pittsburgh. Santana has logged four 1/3 innings of work and tallied one save, one hold with a modest 3:3 BB:K. He should only be targeted in deeper 12+ team formats when looking for saves.

Colin Holderman To Make Another Rehab Appearance

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Colin Holderman (wrist) will make at least one more minor-league rehab appearance with Triple-A Indianapolis, even though he was around the major-league club at PNC Park this past Saturday and Sunday. Holderman started his rehab assignment on Aug. 20. Right-handed reliever Carmen Mlodzinski (shoulder) is on a rehab assignment with Indianapolis and is in a similar spot to Holderman for a potential return to the major-league bullpen. Holderman is recovering from a right-wrist sprain suffered on Aug. 8. The 28-year-old reliever is sporting a 3.43 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 47 strikeouts in 42 innings of work this year for the Bucs. Mlodzinski has been on the shelf since late July 30 with a right-shoulder sprain. Both relievers should be able to rejoin Pittsburgh's bullpen soon, but they aren't on the fantasy radar.

Colin Holderman Notches Rare Save

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Colin Holderman picked up his second save of the season Thursday, securing a 2-1 win over the Atlanta Braves. Holderman allowed a run on two hits, but he did strike out the side. While Holderman has been decent this year, pitching to a 3.38 ERA and 1.33 WHIP, he is clearly behind David Bednar for saves in the Pittsburgh bullpen. Bednar had pitched the last two days and four of the last five, so he was getting some well-deserved rest in this one. Don't expect many more saves from Holderman for the rest of the season.

Colin Holderman Earns His First Save Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates righty Colin Holderman completed his first save of the season in Monday's 5-4 win, going one inning, striking out one, and working around three hits to keep the Oakland Athletics scoreless. The 27-year-old has been solid this year in a setup role, sporting a 2.74 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 27.1% strikeout rate. It'll be hard for Holderman to earn many more save opportunities with David Bednar on the roster, but considering his 12 holds already, fantasy managers in hold leagues should look to pick him up if he's still available.
