The Colorado Rockies have claimed right-handed pitcher Jimmy Herget off waivers. Herget was placed on waivers earlier this offseason by the Chicago Cubs. The reliever logged only 12 1/3 innings in the majors last season with the Atlanta Braves and held a 4.38 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP. During the 2022 and 2023 seasons, Herget pitched for the Los Angeles Angels. He struggled in 2023 with a 4.66 ERA but enjoyed an excellent 2022 campaign as he posted a 2.48 ERA, 0.91 WHIP, and a 15:63 BB:K ratio across 69 innings of work. Despite his poor output this summer, he held a 2.81 xERA which suggests he could be due for some positive regression during the 2025 campaign. For now, fantasy managers should expect the 31-year-old to operate in the Colorado bullpen but could eventually mix in for save opportunities if he performs well.

Los Angeles Angels reliever Jimmy Herget has been optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake City. The Angels made a flurry of roster moves that affect their bullpen on Sunday. Along with Herget, Zack Weiss, and Andrew Wantz were also optioned to the minors. In a pair of corresponding moves, the team selected the contracts of Reyes Moronta and Jacob Webb. None of these moves really have a fantasy impact as Carlos Estevez, who has looked good thus far, is locked in as the team's closer.

With offseason acquisition Carlos Estevez struggling in spring training with a 15.43 ERA through six appearances, Herget is being strongly considered to start off the season as the closer. After the Halos dealt star closer Raisel Iglesias during last years trade deadline, they turned to their closing committee for the second half. 29-year-old Herget led the committee with nine saves, and the Angels were impressed by his performance in high-leverage situations. In high-pressure situations, he posted a 3.51 FIP with 10 strikeouts across 12 2/3 innings. While Herget is a strong candidate to be the teams closer, other names like Aaron Loup and Jose Quijada are in the mix as well.
