Mariners Reportedly Sign Patrick Weigel To Minors Deal
According to Baseball America's Chris Hilburn-Trenkle, the Seattle Mariners have signed right-handed pitcher Patrick Weigel to a minor league deal. The 27-year-old has previously pitched for the Atlanta Braves and Milwaukee Brewers and has thrown 4.2 innings at the Major League level. He was traded by Atlanta to Milwaukee in April with fellow reliever Chad Sobotka for infielder Orlando Arcia. Weigel will provide the Mariners with some additional bullpen depth. Seattle's current late-inning options include Paul Sewald, Ken Giles, Andres Munoz, Diego Castillo, Drew Steckenrider, and Casey Sadler.
Brewers Land Pitchers Chad Sobotka, Patrick Weigel
The Milwaukee Brewers acquired right-handed pitchers Chad Sobotka and Patrick Weigel from the Atlanta Braves on Tuesday in exchange for infielder Orlando Arcia. Arcia had spent all six of his major league seasons with the Brewers and has a career .244 batting average with 42 home runs, 180 RBI and 39 stolen bases. He figures to serve as infield depth for the Braves, leaving him with very little fantasy value. Sobotka, 27, had a 5.36 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 50 relief outings for the Braves over three seasons. Weigel, 26, allowed two runs in two-thirds of an inning in his only major league appearance with the Braves last year.
The Atlanta Braves have dipped into their farm system for pitching yet again, calling up Patrick Weigel and Wes Parsons from Triple-A on Friday. Parsons was with the Braves for the first two months of the year before being sent down. He has a 2.08 ERA and 1.32 WHIP in 21 relief appearances at Triple-A this year. Weigel, meanwhile, has yet to pitch in the majors. He has compiled a 3-2 record with a 2.98 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 52 strikeouts with 33 walks across 60.1 innings (18 appearances, 17 starts) in Double-A and Triple-A this year. Weigel could be worth watching as he's a candidate to earn an opportunity in the rotation in the next week or so.
